The Sports Desk / Re: Ashes Controversy - Poms Tape Bats To Avoid Hotspot
Wouldn't want to be given out LBW after edging onto your pads.
Spot on, hot spot on even!

The silicone tapes and coatings are a doubled edged sword, or bat for that matter.

The first time one of these cheating blokes gets given out edging the ball into their pads, assuming with no hot spot showing, those tapes and coatings will be off like Paris Hilton's knickers!

There is / was a high speed video/image/sound analysis method that allegedly out performed Hawkeye, Hot Spot, Snicko and just about every other method. It could even adjudicate no-balls in real time, and it was smart enough to learn from it's mistakes if any of it's decisions got over-ridden by a third umpire resulting in it getting better over time.

But it was not developed by the owners of the TV networks and no MCC stakeholders were shareholders. In the long term it threatened the status of umpires, and some parties didn't like that. FFS, it would be incorruptible!

As a result I believe the company that developed it has now withdrawn the product from that market segment and restricts sales to security for governments and the military. It may be watching and identifying you right now!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Marc Murphy launches a defence of his season and vows to break free of tags
We're effectively one man down defensively and Judd isn't good enough to tag now anyway. I do see the point you're trying to make though but perhaps would be more effective with a more talented midfield.

I don't agree, I think one reason our midfield is on the slide is because it has gone too far in the tagging and negating direction and not maintained enough focus on itself and what it can do in attack.

I'd rather see a few of them get cut loose to see what they can do, they should have learned that effort is required both ways by now but we seem stuck in defensive balance. Our midfield is no longer feared as an attacking tool, MM's emphasis seems to be running off HB which is why I struggle to understand the form slump of Yarran.

If, like us, you only have one or two genuine mids you are cooked.

It's why the Bombers wont get anywhere in finals. Tag Jobe, job done.
It's why the Eagles went from world beaters to cooked when Judd and Cousins left.

It used to be you could get away with 2-4 mids, but that just won't cut it now. Must have 6 quality runner/ball users rotating through there.

We are 4 mids short .

Agree....now that Judd is on the slide , it only leaves Murphy and we need another 3 -4 quality mids....maybe Graham and Bell might step up if we give them opportunities to learn.

I would argue we have seen Gibbs and Bell step up already. Buckley will be in there eventually as well, and over the last couple of weeks there have been signs from Curnow he has another gear if someone can put him in it!

Bell is a victim of the rookie rules, and nobody knows why Gibbs isn't being played in the midfield.

Our other major mid is the one nobody ever remembers, Kreuzer. If he had a half decent player to give him a chop out of the ruck he would go to another level all together, especially at ground level.

I think it's time 1AW was given some center square work to get done. He looks to have the body, speed and acceleration. Whether he has the quick hands and smarts in that situation is another issue all together. I hate seeing potentially our best ball winners standing opposition forwards.

It is easy to say this is what he must do, as observers we can all talk the talk as can the coach.

But if you are carrying an injury the seemingly simple and obvious can quickly become the impossible, and there is the difference between the rhetoric and reality.

I have no reason to doubt Murphy, he has already done enough to prove to me he has the mental and physical capability. All he needs now is an injury free run at getting fitness.

Not just tapes, there are oils that can be applied to do the same. There are any number of fluoropolymer based coatings and oils that reduce friction and as such may diminish the abilities of hot spot.

Also, there are specific infrared reflecting or absorbing coatings that would also reduce the contrast between the hot zone and the rest of the surface.

For me there is a clear ready made technology solution and Hot Spot, Hawkeye and Snicko are not part of it! But commercial interests are preventing anyone but Hawkeye getting a leg in!

Robert Harvey used to burn off taggers with pure gut running.   Hard when you train once a week with a dodgy knee.
I asked Braddles this very question at a function last year, he said:
"Run till your mans tongue is hanging out of this mouth, then run harder"
Braddles told me he used to run (ie train) 365 days of the year and still does. Thats dedication and thats how its done my friends.

At the peak of his career he could have been described as a OCD, he is alleged to have asked his manager if he was getting too fat to continue playing!

Much respect for Marc toughing it out this season with a broken jaw and bung knee, some players sook over a sore toe.

Agree, it has been obvious to anyone who watches Carlton in detail that Murphy has been carrying a problem for more than half the season so far. He has had zero ability to break away for most of the season, looks slow by his standard and lacks agility. I reckon something went wrong after about Rnd 7 or 8, at that time he started playing more forward than anything else.

As for his season, if Port drop back you rest him up and try to get to the finals without him, so he can have his best chance in a final. If North draw level or if Port go another game ahead it would be season over for Murph, we cannot bridge the gap to North's percentage and if Port get an upset win over one of the two top sides they must play it's over, imho!

Blah-Blah Bar / Racism Beat Up!
I wonder if today's stories about Krakouer's racism claims are a beat up!

For me it is completely reasonable if a Pie supporter of any sort pulls up next to you to lock the doors and windows!  In fact it would seem prudent! ;D

Just as I would if a skinhead Bumbers fan rocked up in the same space or anyone associated with the Tigers. They are all ferals after all.

I don't see the connection to race at all!

Further adding to my confusion, many of Krakouer's generation commonly sport neck tatoos, hoodies, are unshaven, have their ar5e hanging out of their trackies. They are designer bad boys! That's right, bad boy fashionistas! So isn't the reaction to that fashion actually the effect they are after?

I must be confused!

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Federal Election 2013
I wonder if Abbott or Rudd can recite the second verse of Advance Australia Fair, or if they would ever want to?

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Chris Yarran has gone backwards.
I think the individual player problems stem from cultural problems at the club going back a long, long time. It was highlighted way back when the now infamous "We don't rebuild!" statement was issued. As yet I haven't seen any major improvement that I can identify.

We may have been penalised for "Not Rebuilding", but we haven't learned the lessons yet! Ironically I think the cheating Bumbers stalled our progress, because that juiced up result early last year made us question if the direction we were heading in was the right one!

Some of these "World's Best Practice" training and fitness techniques are a worry as well. This to me relates to the "Train Smarter, Not Harder" ideology, and the warning bells for me are the "Not Harder" part. Winners will do both, the smarter techniques should just be seen as the icing on the cake not a complete alternative!

I can understand the "Smarter Not Harder" ethos, if your a 50 year old and want to run your first marathon the "Smarter Not Harder" stuff might help you get across the line where a hard training regime might just kill you. But you won't win the marathon not by a long way!

So why do I think this is important relative to someone like Yarran. Because often the "Train Smarter, Not Harder" ethos is part of the lazy trainers lament!

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Channel your anger
The only thing I did not like about the MM post match was his pandering to Freo. Sure they are good but he might as well have given Lyon a blow job!

Get angry, get critical, but don't be pumping up the opposition tyres under any circumstance.

Respect is good, too much respect is ridiculous!

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Channel your anger
We need a Leigh Brown or two.

Did you see Sandilands float forward and bury his knees into the backs on quite a few occassions, we have nobody with any mongrel by comparison. Twice Watson tried to spoil Sandilands by punching, Freo deliberately put the ball high to the big fella, a team like Hawthorn would puncture his lung!
