Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Jim Park Analysis 2024
AFL 2024 Rd 1:   Carlton vs Richmond
A game we should have won by more, but one in which we stood up when challenged.

Trends:
[1]   There were 16 voters this round, a solid number of start the year and one better than last week.

[2]   The rating was a 8.71, which is an B-. Fair enough considering that we won, and that we dominated significant periods of play.

[3]   14 players managed a mention this week, which is done a little on last week, but still significant. We are a champion team these days, rather than a team of champions and everyone is making a contribution.

[4]   The average vote this week was 30. This is a considerable score.

[5]   4 players managed 100 votes or more this week. This is becoming the norm when we win these days, and I am not disappointed.

[6]   Patrick Cripps managed 346 votes to be BOG this week, just ahead of Mitch McGovern (288 votes).

[7]   three players managed votes from everyone this week; Cripps, McGovern and McKay. Tom de Koning missed from one voter.

[8]   Jack Carroll and Zac Williams were solid again, although not as significant as last week. Young and Kemp were significant.

[9]   We were still a very even team this week, with significant contributions from the mids, the defence and the forwards. May that continue!

Robert Heatley Stand / Jim Park Voting 2024 AFL Rd 4 Carlton vs North Melbourne
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos:
[1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps)
[3] Three players at least must get a mention.
[4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 3 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs North Melbourne
Our line-up:
Backs:  Caleb Marchbank  Jacob Weitering  Zac Williams
Half-backs:  Adam Saad  Mitch McGovern  Nic Newman
Centreline:  Ollie Hollands  Patrick Cripps  Blake Acres
Half-forwards:  Matthew Owies  Harry McKay  Matthew Kennedy
Forwards:  Elijah Hollands  Charlie Curnow  Lachie Fogarty
Followers:  Tom De Koning  Adam Cerra  George Hewett
Interchange:  Jordan Boyd  Jack Carroll  Matthew Cottrell  Corey Durdin  Orazio Fantasia

Emergencies:  Jaxon Binns  Marc Pittonet  Lewis Young

My 2 cents on our selections:
[1] I can't imagine why Marchbank isn't coming back via the VFL. I know he was very good last start, but ... Kemp, in particular, is unlucky. I thought he played pretty well last week and took some important marks when it was necessary. Young also did little wrong; Lynch's goals were very suspect. Having 2 underdone key defenders does not seem to be smart to me.
[2] Corey Durdin and Orazio Fantasia are very lucky to be there. Neither has done much so far. To be honest, I was hoping that Fantasia could get some form and match fitness in the VFL. Durdin worked quite well last week, but he only had 2 possessions.
[3] I'm interested to see Pitto as an emergency. If Goldstein were still playing for North, I'd have liked to have him in the ruck. Xerri is a bull, but I'm hoping Tom can out-jump him. Having the extra tall forward (Tom resting) could really stretch their backline.
[4] Binns can't be far away, nor Cincotta.,Binns didn't impress so much in the VFL last week, but Cincotta did.
[5] North have a very attacking pair of HBF's, but neither of them defend so much. Playing through their opponents might be a smart idea.

AFL 2024 Rd1:   Carlton vs Richmond

Rating:      B
We won, but we should have won by a lot more. We dominated large sections of the game, but failed t put in on the scoreboard.
Then again, Richmond did push us. They were highly motivated after their previous poor effort. But we didn’t just hold them off, we had a chance to really break them and we kept missing.

Votes:
[2.5]   Patrick Cripps
[2]   Mitch McGovern
[2]   Harry McKay
[1.5]   Adam Saad
[1.5]   Nic Newman
[1.5]   Tom de Koning
[1]   George Hewett
[0.5]   Jack Carroll
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp
[0.5]   Lewis Young
[0.5]   Blake Acres
[0.5]   Zac Williams
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow

Explanations:
[2.5]   Patrick Cripps:      A brilliant Captain’s game from Cripps, with 31 possessions, 7 tackles and 4 clearances.
[2]   Mitch McGovern:   An excellent game in defence from Mitch. He managed 26 possessions and 8 marks.
[2]   Harry McKay:      Dominated his position and kicked truly.
[1.5]   Adam Saad:      Another Saad game, getting a lot of the ball while his opponent does a lot of chasing.
[1.5]   Nic Newman:      24 possessions and 7 great tackles and kept his opponent on starvation rations.
[1.5]   Tom de Koning:   Held his own early, but got on top just before half time and through the last quarter. His work was high class when it was really necessary.
[1]   George Hewett:   Another solid game in the middle with 6 clearances.
[0.5]   Jack Carroll:      Another solid game in the middle, but he was caught out a few time for having no right foot.
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp:      A couple of errors, but an excellent game all up. Dominating in the air with 10 marks.
[0.5]   Lewis Young:      Kept his opponent to 2 goals, and they were dubious frees. 9 marks and showed more composure than he did last year.
[0.5]   Blake Acres:      Another solid game from Acres, in the right place at the right time.
[0.5]   Zac Williams:      A solid 2nd up effort from Williams.
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow:   `Charlie should have had 5 or 6, but he made a few terrible errors. Could have split the game open, he had his opponent beaten so often.

Honourable Mentions:
Matthew Owies:      Not a lot of the ball, but he made them count. Probably the most productive small forward on the ground.
Adam Cerra:         Not his best night, but he did good things at the right moments.
Matthew Kennedy:      Trying to do Jack Silvagni’s job, and doing it well enough.

AFL 2024 Rd 0:   Carlton vs Brisbane
A terrible start, but a very solid finish to our first game against last year’s 2nd place getter in Brisbane. This is our first win against Brisbane at the ‘Gabba for something like 11 years, which makes it pretty special.

Trends:
[1]   There were 15 voters this round, a solid number of start the year.

[2]   The rating was a 9.67, which is an A-. That is a measure of how well we finished this game.

[3]   18 players managed a mention again this week, which shows just how we've played in recent times. We are a champion team these days, rather than a team of champions and everyone is making a contribution.

[4]   The average vote this week was 33. Even spread over 18 recipients, this is a considerable score.

[5]   5 players managed 100 votes or more this week. This is becoming the norm when we win these days, and I am not disappointed.

[6]   George Hewett managed 245 votes to be BOG this week, just ahead of Harry McKay (233 votes).

[7]   Only H got votes from every voter this week. George missed one voter, while Tomd de Koning and Cripps missed two.

[8]   Jack Carroll and Zac Williams were in the votes this week, which is excellent. Carroll’s form last year was not consistent enough, while Williams missed the entire year with injury.

[9]   We were a very even team this week, with significant contributions from the mids, the defence and the forwards. May that continue!

Robert Heatley Stand / VFL 2024 Rd 2: Carlton vs North Melbourne at Arden St
Our boys start their season in Rd 2 at Arden St against the 2nd places North at 12:30 on Friday 29th March.

To be honest, our pre-season form hasn't been very good, but we've never had anything like our full complement of AFL or VFL players available. It will be interesting to see just who we select, and how intense we really are.

To be honest, I'd like to see more intensity from our VFL side. We haven't really shown a lot of that under Power. Power has been very good at the development side and dealing with our kids, but he hasn't set the world on fire as a coach. Granted that we'll have a few guys back, I'd like to see a harder edge to our game.

Ladies Lounge / Re: VFLW 2024
The girls had a good first up win at the cattery.

Carlton: 9 - 5 - 59
Geelong: 4 - 4 - 28
It appears that Skeppar didn't play.
Vickers and Sherar were the best for us possession-wise. And Maddy Guerin had 17 possessions and 6 clearances in her first game back for 2 seasons.

Ladies Lounge / VFLW 2024
A very different looking Carlton VFLW team to open their season against Geelong at Geelong this weekend. We do have a few AFLW girls playing, including Meg Robertson and Lila Keck, who play in the Navy Blue for the first time. The game is at 11:15 on Saturday 23rd March.

Only 5 of the VFLW girls from last year are playing this weekend. That is a huge turnover.

Our team
B: Octavia Di Donato (51)  Ciara Fitzgerald (36)
HB: Lulu Beatty (13)  Layla Prince (58)  Steph Demeo (66)
C: Keeley Skepper (4)  Brooke Vickers (24)  Hannah Bowey (64)
HF: Georgia Tait (57)  Mia Austin (22)  Meg Robertson (15)
F: Lila Keck (23)  Sophie McCarthy (54)
FOLL: Jemma Stokes (65)  Maddie Guerin (18)  Keeley Sherar (25)
INT: Asha Turner-Funk (53)  Natasha Phillips (74)  Isla Baldwin (70)  Izzy Khoury (52)  Eliza Wood (50)

EMG: Isabella Parnell (59)  Danika Di Santo (76)  Amy Trindade (62)

Obviously our brain trusts want to get some game time into some of our younger AFLW girls, especially as a number of them have been cruelled by injuries and need time on the park. Some of them, like Skepper and Sherar are probably not going to see much VFLW action, as they are already AFLW mainstays.

Note with interest, Maddy Guerin, who is playing her first game back after another serious knee injury. Just before she was injured, she was stepping up to be a major midfielder with real pace and depth to her kicking. How she will play now, that is the obvious question.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 1 2024 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Richmond
100% honest, I was very worried going into this game.  Between the inevitable let-down after last week's big win and Doc's knee, combined with a Richmond outfit who were always going to be fired up, there was a real chance we would turn up half-baked and get rolled.
I agree. Richard had 3 of their best back and close to their best combo on the field and they were motivated to react after last week's embarrassment. But we looked to be the better team for most of the game. But for our kicking, we would have won by 5 goals. We stuffed up so many times in the forward 50, and, what irritated me more, we didn't look for short options very often. Not enough leading.
Nankervis was a big 'in' for them, and he beat Tom early. I would have liked Pitto out there, as he has the body to handle Nankervis. But Pitto isn't fit yet and doesn't look like he is going to be for a few weeks yet.
I loved the way Tom smothered and chased and tackled in the centre square.

Fortunately, we were 3/4 baked and did enough to win.  Had two chances (start of the second and start of the last) where we could have put the game to bed - if we had established a 20+ lead at any stage, I think the Tiges would have faded - but we stuffed up enough to keep them interested.
The way we played in the middle part of the second quarter was magnificent in all but one way: our finishing in the forward 50. We will be better when a fit Jack martin and a fit Motlop are ready to go. Not sure when that is going to be, though. This was the 2nd's last practice match and we have a bye for VFL Rd 1! We really need our listed players to get more game time under their belts.

This is one of those 'ugly' wins that you need to have - still get the four points, but also (hopefully) learn several lessons.
I don't mind an 'ugly' win, as long as it is a win.

Kudos to our tackling, it has improved out of sight (although Lewis Y needs to do some significant remedial work).
Our tackling last night was magnificent. That and the smothers and the way we read the ball after those things happened. Mitch McGovern was really good at taking advantage of a tackle or smother. He had a very good game.

Best sight for the night - TDK has finally realised he can jump higher than the gorillas and is faster around the ground.  I think his season will only get better.  And Harry's 'ball on the ground, 10 steps, kick' routine is clearly a keeper.
had to agree. To see the way Tom finished off was what I wanted. He can do this, he just has to believe he can.
H also seems to have the belief at the moment. Charlie needs a dose of it; he should have had at least 5.
Fantasia needs some belief badly. He'll be back in the two's when Martin and/or Motlop are available until he believes he can kick goals again.
Mind you, the twos are not looking that great at the moment. Power is great at working with the kids and developing them, but he isn't a great coach. He needs to be doing more development while a good coach gets our players going.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 1 2024 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Richmond
No.40 on the list. Worth a punt. Get better as the season goes on. He might miss for the other Holland's next game though. Having a few runs in the 2nds will help Orazio get his touch back after the long lay-off.
He looked like he needed a few runs in the two's, as he was pretty ordinary this week. His kicking for goal was a strength, but it isn't at the moment.
Ollie Hollands looks more than a little off the pace as well. He did a lot more nice things than Fantasia did, but is still well down on his output from last year. He is just a kid and will get better.
Elijah Hollands is a likely starter against North.
Jack Carroll did some very nice things this week with 3 clearances, but he was caught out a couple of time with no right foot. That is something he needs to work on.
Adam Cerra had an ordinary one this week: he picked up after half time, but did nothing early.
Matty Cottrell was also down this week, although what he did was pretty good. If only Fantasia could have that sort of impact.
Charlie should have had 5 goals, but ended with 2. That mark in the square was brilliant; the play on and get a rushed behind was almost comical. His defensive work late was good and he generally had the better of his duel, but he has brain fades that need work to fix.
The way we mucked up goals was irritating. Jordan Boyd shouldn't have missed from that distance and he wasn't alone. Fat too much effort to get a goal.

Robert Heatley Stand / AFL Rd 2 2024 Bye
We need the bye, if just to get some of our players back. It has been nice to win with the guys we have, but we will be better with more guys available.
