Yes. That's a good win. No being outplayed for 3q crap. No come back from 6 goals down nonsense. Controlled the game, ahead on the scoreboard most of the time, fought it out to the end. That's what good teams do.

Well done to all players and coaches.

Couple of soldiers were handy today. Newman and Sammo off hbf and gibbons and jack on hff.  Makes a big diff when ur flankers are contributing

Won the disposals, clearances, I50's, CP's, hit outs, and, best of all, 81 tackles.

Nice work.

Yes, and a couple of very interesting post game interviews of players with King.  8)

There were a couple of strong and sarcastic digs about "training wheels" by the commentary team during the game - Juddy will take a while to live that one down and pressure will be building on the "selection panel". A few hard games to go yet but anyway.....

Thoroughly deserved that win. Hard at it and committed - can't ask much more than that. Scrappy at times but who the feck cares.

McKay needs to get out on the park and have 50 set shots at goal every day.

If you want to know what's wrong with football look no further than the free to Tom Papley in the 3rd quarter which gifted them a goal.  If that's a legitimate free kick then there simply would be no game to watch whenever P. Cripps takes the field.

Start of game. Ball up. Whistle. Free to Cripps. Cripps kicks downfield where there's a stoppage. Ball up. Whistle. Free to Cripps. Cripps goals.
Back to centre. Ball up. Whistle. Free to Cripps. etc., etc.

They also called a "not 15" against Simmo I think, deep in our defence in the last few minutes, with the game in the balance,  which was very very marginal and would never have been called any other time imo.

Bloody good win versus the AFL's pet side. Deserved win, won all meaningful statistical categories.

Two weeks Dawson.. Totally unnecessary.

Longmire has backed the wrong horse. If you can't beat Carlton at home with helpful officials you've got problems.

Well that was pretty enjoyable.

They just seemed measured, not as much panicking. Newman was Mr Solid, perfect.

Umpiring really started to be wtf, any slight infringement free to them, ignored for us.

Felt like we really ground it on, tackling was actually sticking for a change.

Ok I was and am a BB fan in that I think he’s a good bloke but Newman and Murph both seemed to say BB over coaches and it wasn’t enjoyable under him? Murph especially seemed to say the boys now know their roles and have freedom, think he said there been turnovers of 10-12 each season and hopefully that doesn’t happen anymore. Interesting.

Cripps said boys are all great mates and enjoy playing together - seems to be some real joy there now.

Kreuzer Murph and Curnow are playing really well.

Good team win and to beat the Swans on their home deck is probably worth six points, Teague got a little bit out of every player nearly today which is
the sign of a good coach and what you need to win the tough close games.
Not pretty to watch but how good is it to be winning more than we lose, been a long while since we have been this competitive.
Newman vs his old mob seemed to lift another gear and Casboult is reborn as a player..

He's a very valuable player now, there must be a few recruiters wondering why they couldn't see that potential and go for him when he was on the trade table. Most om this forum had him pegged.

Haven't seem anyone calling Murf soft since Teague took over.............

I feel like I have literally watched a replay of every time we've lost to the Swans for the last 10 years.

Our mids refuse to man up for the entire match. Zone / 10-15m away from their opponents and the Swans just chip the ball through us all day.

It was one of the most disappointing matches I think I've ever watched and I include 90+ point hammerings in that. It's like we have no understanding of the most basic elements required to win a game of football. If you're sitting there on the coaching panel watching the way the Swans very simply chipped their way through our team over and over and over and did nothing to stop it - what are you doing there.

Forget talent/age - this has nothing to do with that - it's just effort. If the coaches instruction is to run that extra 10m to shut down the only option the Swans ball carrier has and the player doesn't follow that instruction then the coach should be dragging you and send you to the VFL the next week and finding someone else to do it.

My suspicion is our coaching performance was seriously sub-par. I have practically never criticised Bolton but this game was winnable and I don't know if Bolton knows how to extract the performance required to win a game any more.

The above were my comments from after the Rd 3 Sydney match.

I reckon this has pretty much proven out now.

Bolton simply lost any ability he had as a match day coach to pull the right moves OR extract a consistent level of effort from the players.

Lovely bloke but I remember that round 3 game as the one where I started to draw the conclusion on Bolton.

Murphy in an interview after the game against the Swans had a simple conclusion to how we are coached to play games. A simple game plan that is easy to execute, and every player knows his exact role. Teague has indicated the same in his interview. You execute you role exactly to instructions. No ifs or buts.

Just dug this off another site...... "My son in law played under Bolts when he coached the then Tassie Devils in the VFL ,and he said that he coached like a school teacher (totally controlling ) and was very very stubborn on his thoughts of how the game should be played . I think this was probably his ultimate downfall . Having said that I wish him all the best for the future and believe that he had the very best of intentions for the club and players."

I went to an intra-club practice match several years ago and was impressed when a strapping young rookie took a fantastic pack mark.  I thought that he could become a very good footballer and I think that Levi has finally become that very good footballer.  His chase and tackle in the last quarter was a great effort, and not something we would expect from Levi.  It wasn’t a match-winning effort but it represented what seems to be a new found desire to be a more complete footballer.  Well done Levi ... but I’m not sure that I can squeeze him into my best five players.

They’ve become a whiney bunch, the Swans.

Make no mistake, to be in finals contention they needed to win this one.

The boys should be incredibly proud of themselves today, especially as they would’ve been disappointed after last weeks close loss.

Fan farking tastic!

Watched the game today on foxtel. Now I generally like Paul Roos but he is very Sydney biased.
Anyway great win by the boys. The change post BB pretty amazing. Yes the skill errors are still there but the confidence and belief has grown significantly and they just keep working away and are helping each other and you can see they are enjoying their footy and playing with each other.
That translates into a good team to watch now..it's not like going to the dentist anymore watching us play! ;D

Agree, listening to Roos was so Sydney biased it was really grating.

Yes there were stupid skill errors but not as many plus I saw something I haven’t seen for a long time - I think it was Kreuzer blocking after giving off to cripps in the 4th - unselfish.

And the tackling has improved 100%.

Newman said after the game, we have a lot of good young players and they’re being left to play. I would love to know what exactly has happened.

Went out to the game yesterday with my boy, just about the ultimate football experience for him.
I found out beforehand where the cheer quad were sitting and booked our seats with them.
We went to the pub beforehand for the pre match meet and greet, only downside for the day was not winning a raffle.
Legend bloke at the pub handed me an envelope and says to me “take your boy out on the field for the guard of honour”.
Lined up on the ground for cheers and high fives as the lads took the ground.
My boy had a ball screaming his head off and cheering at the top of his lungs with the cheer squad guys.
A win against my equal most hated team, a great win!
And As we are cheering for the boys down on the boundary after the game, Gibbons runs straight over to my son and hands him a signed ball.

The boy hasn’t stopped playing with it since we got home. He is pretending he is a Patrick Cripps & Marc Murphy running around the house kicking it and handpassing to himself.

Couldn’t have planned a more legendary experience for him.

Will Sedderfield 9 tackles and significant forward pressure. Exactly what Teague said about ‘Just doing your job.’  Progressing very nicely......after 14 games!!

I reckon WS is showing some really good signs.

2020 he could be the hard inside mid we need to help Cripps at the centre bounce and stoppages.

Yes we must remember that although he's been around for a while he is, due to injury, still very much in the development stage. He'll be a very good player imo. Also a solid enough performance again from Lang, and he seems popular with the other players  - will he come good as well? Big bonus if he does.

Agreed, it's development from guys like SoJ and Setterfield that for me diminishes our need to pay overs for another mid. Setterfield, SoJ, Dow, Walsh, Fisher, SPS, Gibbons, are all going to be better in 2020.

I don't know about you people but I have taken a major dislike against Blakey.  I don't know if it's his demeanour or apparent aggrogance but he needs taking down a peg.  Reminds me of a young Fletcher.... all elbows and attitude.

Agreed. Getting much bigger wraps that his output warrants....

Really had little influence on the game imo.

Lang's effort late in the last sealed the win. Perhaps a few wins will get his confidence up and see him doing what most believe he cab do (which is a lot more than what we've seen from him during his stint at CFC).

Would be managing Dow and O'Brien.

That one he, or you for that matter, won't forget for a long time.

Agree re Lang - some real desperation to intercept the Syd kick near our F50.  Bloody brilliant pick up by Dow to kick to H and seal it.

Disagree re Dow and LOB - LOB is making a mark and Dow will come good; I really have no doubts those two will come good and when it happens, it'll happen fast and they won't look back.  I think it will happen, is happening, now.  LOB seems so confident when he gets it, and whilst there are some miskicks/errors, he's got this solid attitude about himself and a bit of mongrel, which we need.  Dow is (will be) silk.

On the much overhyped Blakey:

9 disposals, 0 tackles, 0.3 (3 behinds) - 36 Fantasy points.

Walsh

28 disposals, 3 tackles, 1.1 goals.

100 Fantasy points.

Worlds apart.

I always want us to say something about the seemingly one sided umpiring - Cats definitely have their players trained up to question everything and complain incessantly and I can't help but think that that sways the umpiring - Sydney are doing it too.

Oh for sure.
Never thought I'd be in such as position.
The club deserves kudos for giving a bunch of kids (and their dads/mums) a great game day experience.
It may have cemented his loyalties too. He has been running around the house ever since commentating himself as all of the Carlton boys. We had to go down the park this morning for a kick around. We alternated between Cripps, Levi and "big H"

Watched LOB a few times yesterday when coming out of defence on our side of the ground. He has a lot of poise and is a great field kick as well.
I think he has come along leaps and bounds in the last 6-8 weeks.

Yes i believe he is still there. At least he was when i went to the family day early in the year. Asked him about Levi's kicking and he said he was doing ok. However i have not sen him on the bench lately. He was always there as part of the coaching group.

Na just reverse swing. I was willing it the other way as i was watching it. It worked.  :D :D

Watched the replay... not a great game to watch.

Few things:

The free kicks for a small hold around the ball up - I reckon it was 10-0 Sydney's way.

Sydney players love putting their head down charging at the ball and then throwing the head back as if they've been hit.

W@nk#rs / cheats.

Newman's game was better than I first thought. BOG by a mile.

Curnow shutting down Parker was very important. He's been going at 30-odd per match for the past couple of months and Ed kept him very quiet whilst having 28 himself.

The most noticeable thing for us was how many players we kept in our forward line. I remember under BB Harry kept very high and constantly trying to get the ball kicked over his head so we could get a fast break. It literally never happened and Harry looked utterly baffled by it. He got all of his possessions leading up.

The Swans were just trying to suck all their numbers back and get cheap goals out the back by handballing through the middle. It took so much effort from our mids to apply enough pressure to stop this. Caused those rushed kicks forward by the Swans which Newman mopped up as the loose man. His kicking was elite all day.

The effort was what won the game. Our blokes just ran their guts out all day.

I thought that was Newman and Plowman's best game yet. Considering we lost Marchy, Weiters, and Goddard in the past 2 games and Jones has just returned, our backline was fantastic.
Despite all the changes, our backs seem exceptionally cohesive. No doubt Simmo, Daisy, and Newman to a lesser degree, are instrumental in this. Both the old boys played with such passion.  It's a real credit to them, and the coaching staff.

Levi is rejuvenated and must be loving his footy right now. At this rate, he'll get another year or so.

As for Murph and Ed in the midfield. Who'd have thought ????
I didn't think I'd see further improvement from Ed. Wrong. To his credit, he's taken his game to a new level. Have to be one of the best taggers in the competition. Not only limiting his opponent but offensively damaging. As for Murph, he's wound back the clock and seems more aggressive. Never saw that coming either.

I've been critical of Lang. He did a couple of things that gave me a little hope. He jumped straight in when Dow went down ✔ He sprinted to spoil his opponent when Swans had some momentum late in the game✔ He kicked a goal✔

Go Blues

Just got back from Sydney and a tour of country NSW. Surprised to find the post game celebrations had fallen off the rotation. Obviously we are more interested in talking about what is wrong than what is right.
First time in Sydney since 1986 when Cats was playing and Doull matched up on Capper. Better result this time.
Almost 35000 people there,  mostly Sydney, Carlton was able to take the crowd out of the game which meant there was very little atmosphere. The game was totally contested which Carlton dominated and we probably should have won by more but the players were very determined to keep the game in tight.
Sydney is very discipline, stick to their structures and have better skills, whereas Carlton has the potential to be anything, we just need to improve our skills, particularly our field kicking.
Sydney's lack of big men meant that losing Goddard was not such a big blow. He actually looked pretty comfortable out there and since Casboult and Jones are in their 30's, he could be pretty handy into the future.
Silvagni and Casboult are the two biggest improvers this year. Sometimes we concentrate too much on what people can't do and miss what they can.
It was a good solid win, and on reflection, a win we should have been expecting but our history over the past 15 years has lowered our confidence.
For the rest of the season, there are two games we should win, Gold Coast and St.Kilda, we must be a big show against Adelaide, and we need to be competitive against West Coast, Richmond and Geelong. It would be great to finish with eight wins for the season.

Sad but true Blue Moon.  I think we're all a little shell shocked from the majority of the last 20 years.  It really sucks starting the season so poorly and not having a hope of playing finals from somewhere around round 5.  Again.  I'm loving this resurgence but am very cautious about getting too excited as yet.  Another 3 or 4 wins and I'll be very happy with the second half of the season.  I dunno the stats but we have hardly won a game in the back half of the season for the last 4 years.  Something like 5 - 10 at a guess.  That's shizen, and gives us no impetus going into the next season.  It's super important we change that this season, and so far so good.  Every game matters for the rest of the year.  We should probably celebrate the wins a little more.  But we're scared little kittens now.  Go Blues !

Dont think we need to get too cocky that we are are sure things to beat GC and StKilda......Stkilda with Richo have been tough work but now have a better coach in a honeymoon period looking to win that senior role. IMO the Saints will be tough work and its naive to think we can just rock up and beat them.

GC will have their backs against the wall and all teams are dangerous when that happens, GC could be a coach killer too, everyone is suddenly jumping onboard the
Teague bandwagon and expectation is high of a win. IMO this game is one where Teague now has everything to lose and nothing to gain.....if he wins it will just go down
as a routine expected win if he loses it be a nail in his coffin for the senior job and the training wheels will be back on.
Lets hope the players have the right attitude this week ,expect a decent contest and dont let Teague down...

given their injury list - and the suspension of Miles - we would have to kick 4.20 ish to lose imo.

Agreed, Saints will be very tough. Arguably tougher than the Crows!

Further to our SpecialK discussion.

The Aints have Rowan Marshall in hot form, probably been in the top three BoG for them two weeks running, very relevant for us as the Aints generally touch us up in the midfield anyway!

Fly, Gibbs doesnt add anything to what we already have and if anything would be a negative given he has been called out
at the Crows for not contesting well enough.

I’m not sure that he has been called out.  I think that is more a case of a failing coach thrashing around for solutions and not having the balls to tackle the real problems at the Crows (that’s code for Tex).

Port have their coaching (and president) issues too but I think Gibbs would do OK there - but I’d have him back on our list if it was at no cost - and that’s not going to happen.

As for the Crouch brothers - meh!  Their best footy is behind them and they’d just be stealing games from our youngsters.
