We started well and played 4q. That was pleasing. Won all the important contests in the air and ground. 50+ i50 wins most games. Harry marked everything but couldn't finish. Eddie couldn't mark but contributed otherwise.                                  I understand the conditions were hot, humid, and slippery. But 7 18 😖 I hope that excessive inaccuracy doesn't come back to bite us. Surely that's skill not conditions.

I thought our captains, Murph, Simmo, Newnes, Casboult, and Ed came through at important times. Gibbons is ever consistent and so smart.

Our backs look the goods, albeit against young fwds. Weiters is consistently performing like the star we hoped we'd drafted.

Our youngsters are looking settled and it seems there's semblance of team balance.

In all it was a scrappy affair, but one we never looked like losing. That's progress.
Coming together is the beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.

The conditions provided more competition than Gold Coast who were like a high school team. Kudos to Gibbons,Murphy, Newnes and De Koning who kick started the win.
Defense was solid and Cripps, Martin, Walsh and Setterfield built on the good start.
Good win and now onto Collingwood..

A week can be a long time in football, but Jack Newnes actually looked like he belonged, he played with more flair and intensity and showed further glimpses of why we grabbed him. Mature body, experience, has some pace and has a few tricks.  The players around him obviously have confidence in him, and his confidence in himself is growing now too.

Good point, I think the whole team has grown in confidence of late. The preparedness to take the game at all costs looks mores aggressive to me as opposed to timid and unsure. Sure, some mistakes occur and turnovers occur but what I like more is that we can stop the oppo from scoring from those TO's. The defence was rock solid last night aided by the mid. Dare I say but LJ-Weiters-Plow-Doc-Willo-SPS-Simmo is a formidable backline, miserly even. Premierships are won off the back of gun defences.

Can Harry go off and learn how to kick for goal.
His preparation is poor and reeks of laziness or cockyness.
I have zero confidence when he is lining up, I'd rather Casboult kicking and that's saying something.
And we found out he has no right foot.
Fev was 120% invested in concentration at the goal whereas Harry, mmmmm???
Wheres Fev as a specialist coach?
2024... Moir of the same to come

Sometimes it's hard to reconcile 4 points with the spectacle you've just witnessed. Gold Coast were little more than witches hats in the main. A rather sloppy, amateurish, bruise free game to be honest.

Betts started the season like a house on fire, sucked me in to admitting my doubts on him were wrong, then nothing. Looks shot. DeKoning looks very promising. Fisher looks lively, speedy, and a real threat around goals. Walsh and Cripps were good, apart from the latter's goal kicking.

Go back and watch it again.

When Harry misses, he is within 1m of the goals.

When Levi misses, he is lucky to get within 10m of the goals.

Harry is a very good set shot and gives it every chance. If the goals were 1m wider, he'd have 5.

Plenty of others i'd criticise for their kicking before i point at harry.

When you are a 33yo who prides himself on pressure, and you are forced to play a condensed season....but still keep up that pressure.....you will start to see a drop off in form.

IF, and i hope we do, IF we make finals, i hope we give him a rest leading into them because he can still tear a game apart when given the opportunity.

One thing i'll say in regard to eddie...we need to stop targetting him going inside 50 with long bombs. Martin is one who bombs on his head frequently. He will always be the smallest bloke in the contest and bombing on his head is not doing him any favours.
Bomb it on a key forwards head instead. Eddie will get more benefits from it that way.

Harry did one field kick out near the wing and it was the laziest kick you will see, went about 10m and he laid back on it and it slid of the boot at about 30 degrees.
There is work to be done on his kicking imo.. Ditto with Martin who also lays back on his kicks for goal, started the season well but just of late is having this problem.

Betts may not be contributing goals. But he's more than worth his spot.
His pressure is amongst the best (if not the best) in the forward line.
While  he may not be kicking the goals himself his actions are creating opportunities.
He's ranked =7th in the league for goal assists this season
Most importantly he's a player the opposition cant afford to ignore so he commands attention which takes a bit of pressure off others.

When he's near the ball the opposition defenders would still be very nervous.

Betts was good value last night but his brain was in 4th gear about his next evasive move before taking a couple of marks in a more relaxed 1st.

That's maybe the happiest Carlton side I've seen a quite a while after a win.

Interesting to hear Nick R and Johnno B talking about Eddie post game. They said he should now focus more on kicking goals and a bit less on pressure acts to be more effective and entertaining for us .
Reality always wins in the end.

Eddie is #1 all time in goal assists.

Whether he kicks them or not, he brings teammates into the game. We are playing as unselfish a brand of football as i've seen from this club for the past 20 years. Don't change it.

Love Crippas "The Blues are back!" comment as he walked into the change rooms. Tells me he (as a leader) was very satisfied with the way his team played (maybe accuracy in front of goal aside).
