I really don’t understand how umpires determine free kicks.  What happens at one end of the ground is a free and the same thing at the other end is play on or a ball up.

Not that it would make a huge difference to the result but it would be a closer contest.

Kick 40m, hope someone is there
Everyone at the drop stand still and wait to see what happens
Let north get it. keep standing still
North run away with it, follow slowly.
Hope defence gets back in time to cover.
