I agree that Freo will win easily. Don't know about the pressure to beat Essendon - from whom ? Erudite, knowledgeable and sensible CFC supporters know that Essendon's off season recruiting was about short term survival / competitiveness. As you yourself have stated, their list is better than ours at the moment.

No pressure from me.

It would be the worst start to the season in our history. It basically starts the ball rolling.

Just on this Thomas thing.

I had a revelation today and it made me angry with the club.

Why did we take Daisy as a FREE AGENT.
Why didn't we trade for him?

Reason being, we didn't get compensation for Eddie Betts leaving because we got Thomas is. Had we have traded for Thomas, we would've still got him AND got compensation for betts leaving.

If Collingwood were never going to match the offer, or couldn't match the offer, why not offer them a trade.
Lets say we traded away a 3rd (or even a 2nd) round pick for Daisy.

They get a 3rd round pick for a player they were going to lose for free anyway. They are happy.
We get Thomas via trade, and thus mean we are eligible for compensation for Betts leaving and possible get a 1st round pick as compensation.

The upshot of it all is, we get a 3rd round pick upgraded to a 1st round pick and still get Thomas.

Why the hell didn't the club do this?

Why would Collingwood trade him for a 3rd rounder when they knew the size of his contract and knew it would get them a first rounder as compo? They would trade for a 3rd rounder and lose a 1st - would be the biggest bork of all time.

Dont think the aussie public has caught on to Turnbull justyet and an election win will give him the mandate he currently doesn't have both with the public and the liberal party.

Ain't gonna be any success for a couple of years - a lot more mediocrity to come.

Champions exhibit champion qualities well before they become champions.

Same as teams, so i dont accept that mediocrity and results are the same thing.

We need to work harder than anyone else, we need to prepare better than anyone else. We need to manage our lists better than anyone else. We need to strive to better everything we do.

We can do all this regardless of what happens on the scoreboard. We may need to accept that we wont often get the results we want but we dont have to accept mediocrity in how we apply ourselves in every aspect of the game and how we approach improvement.

Our time will come.

Anyone else think Curnow is the opposite of Jones? Manages to find himself in the play if he's somewhere near the contest. First forward since Fev with that quality. I'm excited about this kid, so glad we weren't scared off by the off field crap.

I actually think our problem is that we do not have dominant key position players. We have Jamison down back who is competitive but is past his best and Casboult up forward who is problematic. Our key position players may beat their opponents, or reduce their effect on the game, but they do not dominate the games. Weitering Curnow, Plowman, McKay, Silvagni, Glass-McClasken could all be part of the future solution to this issue. You will be surprised how good our running players will be come if we developed a good spine.

I dont necessarily agree with this entire post but this is a key issue for our club. I am wary because I remember seeing a first year Murphy getting the poo smashed out of him until Copeland flung him and busted his shoulder up.

Murphy got up and tried to tackle him, causing a throw in while out numbered,i believe, before limping off - his season over. I thought  this kid will be up there with our best leaders, which hasnt quite panned out.

So while it's exciting seeing these kids we have to remember that there is a long way to go and their leadership qualities need to be nurtured as much as their footy skills.
