Can we afford a Carlton VFL team?

....or rather can we afford not to have one.

We need to be able to try players in multiple positions under match conditions without having any regard for results.

Our players need to be able to progress to senior football having practiced an developed their roles in a secondary competition.

There needs to be total control over team selection and positioning in our 'reserves' side by the senior coaching panel.

If this isn't existing under the present arrangement we need to go it alone.

Why does it matter if we are the Northern Blues or the Carlton Blues in the VFL?

Preston have no money, they have low expectations and live and die based on what senior AFL players they have available. They will accept whichever coach we give them and currently play the same brand of footy as our seniors which is half the reason they get cut up so badly.

They also don't play their blokes ahead of ours and we tell them where when and how to play.

I.E. No ruckman aside from ours.  It's been that way for years.

The above is a double edged sword too, as they then use Watson in the ruck when he is not going to ruck at AFL level because Warnock is done and there is no one else coming through but that's as much our fault as it is theirs.

This discussion is often brought up but we struggle because we cannot get our club functioning properly and I don't see what having more teams to manage will do to assist with that.

This has been go case for years Lods.   The Bullants have no money and are 100% compliant.  Our Coach.  Our Staff.   We pick the sides.   We run the show.   Sure we don't do it very well but that's a different story.

Lol maybe we should let preston run themselves and they'll produce better players.

If it's the case that we totally run the show let's call it for what it is then.....
Carlton.

Frankly Lods I reckon its bollocks.

They do what we tell them and play guys as we request.

I've seen a plenty of reports of guys being rested early, managed loads and played in positions we've asked.

It's a non issue, a distraction, an excuse to look for scapegoats outside the club.

20 other stinking piles of crap need shovelling before we worry about our seconds.

Remember the year the bullants were premiership favourites and once our season was over we made them play our duds in the finals and they got smashed lol.

I agree with the majority here. It essentially Carlton 2nds, with a throwback to the preston days thrown in for good measure.

However, perhaps a final rebranding/takeover could make a difference.
Perhaps we'd be better able to recruit players if the NBs became 'Carlton'.

"Who do you play for?"
"Carlton.......*mumbles* VFL"

Sounds better than 'Northern Blues'

Might get more interest in them, better sponsors etc.

If nothing else, a 2nds side could be a moneymaker if done right....a financial drain if done wrong, but worth a try.
