Blah-Blah Bar / Gab and Boydy on the squid
I'm not sure what to make of this:

https://www.carltonfc.com.au/video/1423310/gone-fishing-boydy-and-gab-catch-squid?videoId=1423310&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1693797114001

It's amusing, but an odd pairing and not a pastime I'd expect these two to embrace.  Their reactions to the squid suggested that they weren't entirely comfortable.

I wonder whether it was spicy stir-fry, salt and pepper squid, or Greek-style with lemon, garlic and olive oil for dinner  :-\

Blah-Blah Bar / Vale Robbie Robertson
One of the giants of my musical experience, Robbie Robertson passed away yesterday at 80 years of age.

Robbie was lead guitarist for Bob Dylan in the 1960s and early 1970s but really came to my attention as guitarist and songwriter with the Band with classic songs like the Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Ain’t Got No Home and many others.

RIP Robbie.

Blah-Blah Bar / Vale Rodriguez
I only discovered the music of Sixto Rodriguez relatively recently but what an unusual career he had; blissfully unaware of his popularity and success in southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Compared to Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens, his music seemed to strike a chord with Deadheads and fans of protest songs.  I can’t listen to a lot of Rodriguez but I don’t mind playing an album occasionally.

RIP Rodriguez.

The Sports Desk / Tim Tszyu - almost WBO super welterweight world champion
In the crazy world that is boxing, Tim Tszyu is about to become WBO super welterweight world champion.

Jermell Charlo will be stripped of his title when he fights Canelo Alvarez and Tszyu will become the champion.

Tszyu’s next fight will become a world title defence.

I think that Tim is a worthy champion but I’m sure that he would prefer to win the belt in the ring.

Ladies Lounge / Former Blue Tayla Harris pummelled
Tayla had the tripe belted out of her by Millicent Agboegbulen in their super welterweight bout.

I didn’t watch the fight but Tayla’s battered face suggests that her technique needs work if she’s going up against girls who can box.  And then there’s CTE …

Ladies Lounge / AFLW Season 8 - 2023
The AFL has announced that the 2023 AFLW season will kick off during the AFL bye week in September.  However, the duration of the season is still being negotiated as part of the CBA.

I really don't think that the AFL has a firm vision for the AFLW.  Uncertainty about the season's structure and duration won't and credibility to the competition.

Blah-Blah Bar / Vale Barry Humphries
Barry Humphries has died, aged 89.

I guess that he’s been a constant purveyor of humour and satire for most of my life.

My first real exposure to Barry was through “the Adventures of Barry McKenzie … that’s the comic, not the movie.  The movie was good, but not as good as the comic.

Barry was really a living treasure and his passing is a sad loss.

Robert Heatley Stand / VFL Practice Match - Carlton vs Richmond
There's not a lot of information about the game but there's a lot of interest in how the AFL-listed players went.

I'll copy some information from the Twitter feed to provide the bare bones.  Flesh them out as you can.

Carlton:        0.4.4    1.6.12    8.11.59   12.14.86

Richmond:  3.3.21    7.5.37    9.8.62     12.9.81

Goals: Dow 4, Lemmey 3, Moschetti 2, Pittonet 1, Crocker 1, Carrol 1

It's good to see that we're not relying on Crocker to score most of our goals and even better to see young Lemmey getting among the goals.

There's a report on the Richmond website but the only Carlton player who gets a mention is Paddy Dow for "jagging a goal"  ::)

Blah-Blah Bar / Jeff Beck RIP
What can you say?

One of the greatest guitarists ever and far too young at 78.

RIP Jeff Beck 🙁

Ladies Lounge / Past players in the news
Former Blue, now Richmond AFLW player, Jess Hosking, is in the news for the wrong reasons; she has been charged with allegedly driving a jet-ski while under the influence of alcohol on a trip to Queensland.

It’s only a very brief report in the Age online but the phrase “former Carlton AFLW player” doesn’t appear  :)

Blah-Blah Bar / Sport, sponsors, activism and politics
The Diamonds/Rinehart spat is dominating the environment thread but it has nothing to do with the environment or climate change.

Bubbling along at the same time are Pat Cummins’ anti-Alinta stance, Saudi Arabia’s use of golf to try to improve its image, the ban on Russian athletes, and now the Socceroos’ powerful criticism of Qatar’s human rights abuses:

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/world-cup/fifa-world-cup-2022-socceroos-protest-qatar-human-rights-migrant-workers-news-video-statement-lgbtqi/news-story/c6307919cf59925bfaf43f6b46f6b317

Going back in time there are the Olympic boycotts, Peter Norman’s support of the Black Power protest, athletes taking the knee in support of Black Lives Matter, the Springbok protests and eventual ban on South African sport.  I guess the dreadful Munich Olympics tragedy could also be included as could Hitler’s use of the 1936 Berlin Olympics.  Then there’s tobacco, alcohol, gambling, etc advertising.

The old adage, “sport and politics don’t mix” seems to be more honoured in the breach.
