To become a true premiership contender we will need to improve the structure/movement of our forwards and particularly how the ball is delivered into the forward 50 m area. Long high kicks into the area are a gift for backs to set up and defender against.
No wonder Charlie C. had a bad finals series given the way we were delivering the ball. With a less cluttered up forward line, Charlie and co may even get some effective leads in!
We also would benefit from another mid size marking straight kicking forward, imo.
Thought the strength of our 'settled' backline a major reason for the run of wins, with Kemp's form a highlight. However, I haven't been at these games. Perhaps Boyd in to stand guard on a key small forward!
As viewed from O'Reilly Stand on a cold Sydney night. Competitive for much of the game, including periods when we ran in numbers with overlap & handball. However, the usual poor delivery into 50 or fluffed shot at goal. We certainly need another marking forward to take pressure off Charlie & Harry. Late in game Sydney had player/s who could mark on the forward flanks and "kick the goal".
Team. C
3 Cottrell 3 Walsh 3 Weitering 2 Charlie - he & Harry drew a crowd when ever the ball went in there 2. Cerra 1 . Motlop - great first half, but Sydney pounced on him in the second. 1 Docherty
I don't know how much Weitering's financial woes might be affecting him but, since the loss of Jones, he has been largely anchored on the last line and has devolved to mostly punching to spoil, which are often more effective than his kicks of late.
It would be an interesting swap for a quarter or to, Harry Mckay to CHB and Weitering to the forward line. The shake up might pull Weiters out of a form slump and certainly make the opposition think. Suspect that Harry could be sensational at CHB
Will be at game Syd. Fri night, so fingers crossed for gutsy performance our boys. Ab
In similar vein, on a day when Crippa is not effective (with half the opposition hanging off him), it would be interesting to see how he would go at CHB. Ab
Aside from the West Coast game what we're doing just isn't working at the moment. The forward line is dysfunctional and actually an asset to the opposition. We need to do something different. Maybe even something radical and unexpected e.g Swap Harry and Young,
Yes like the thought. The one thing that seems to be missing from Voss's coaching (so far) is his willingness to take risk. In game radical position changes can get the team back firing sometimes. Ab
1. After sitting through the Adelaide Oval Crows debacle I mentioned the old football coaches cry "pick up your man! When CFC kick out after point score, other teams man us up and put us straight under pressure. We often allowed Brisbane to easily kick short to a player. We did have the same number of players, didn't we?
2. Witches hats when Brisbane had the ball and heading deep into their forward line. Yes our guys do the right and run down there, but then some (like Motlop) seem to be mesmerised, just stand there and don't man up.
Plenty of effort at times , but not well directed.
Sounds like there could have been a reason for TDK's performance.
"A difficult fortnight for axed big man Tom De Koning continued on Saturday when he suffered a concussion and finished with just seven touches, 13 hitouts and one goal in a narrow loss to the Bulldogs. The 23-year-old, who was dropped from the senior side two weeks ago, is out of contract at the end of this season." from "Axed Blue Concussed". AFL
Well L.N - while watching the game last night from top level Adelaide Oval I thought the Lesson 1 should be "Pick up your man" (And then beat him to the ball!) Ab
