2018 VFLW Rd 8: Carlton vs Melbourne Uni

Melbourne Uni have strong links with the new North Melbourne AFLW franchise and are playing some of their girls.
Our Blue Babes really need a little something at the moment, but hope springs eternal.

This is a Double Header with the Northern Blues, the 3rd such this season.

CARLTON  v. MELBOURNE UNI

F: 15. I. Gietzmann, 36. C. Moody, 45. R. King

Out: T. Hanks,  T. Lucas-Rodd,  M. Brancatisano,  B. Schultz,  K. Cunico

It is very nice to see Alison Downie named for the Blues. I am certain she hasn't played VFL for us before. It gives us more ruck options and someone who can take a mark. Granted that she struggled to make an impat back in March, but I can hope. I also like the return of Sophie Li.

M. Suzuki is an interesting inclusion as well. I know nothing of her at all.

Melbourne Uni

23P: 26. C. Greiser

In: R. Green, S. Abbatangelo, J. Stanton, E. Hay, C. Fitzpatrick, C. Greiser, D. Hardiman, M. McDonald, E. Humphries, T. Watson

Out: J. Anderson, K. Price, K. Klatt, L. Belza, E. Kearney, M. Prespakis, J. Grierson

On the other hand, I am not at all happy seeing Kate Gillespie-Jones and Danielle Hardiman is foreign colours. :(

Lets hope she brings some GoGo attitude to the game!

Do we know why we have so many 1's type players that are not playing?

Hosking twins, Vescio, Harris, Stevens, Pound, Loynes etc

Lost by a gaol as well. :( We can't take a trick at the moment.

Carlton 5.2-32 5.2-32 6.4-40 6.6-42
Melbourne Uni 2.0-12 5.2-32 7.2-44 7.6-48

That last quarter must have been hard yakka! We kicked 2 points, they kicked 4 points. :(
Carlton
Goal Kickers: K. Harrington 2, K. Cox, A. Downie, I. Gietzmann, C. Hardeman
Best Players: S. Li, R. King, B. Moody, K. Harrington, A. Downie, N. Plane

Melbourne Uni
Goal Kickers: K. Angelis 3, A. Price 2, C. Greiser, K. Ashmore
Best Players: A. Tupper, E. Hay, A. Riddell, L. Ahrens, K. Angelis, K. Gillespie-Jones

I hope Alison Downie keeps going. It was great to have her play well. Not so great to have Gillespie-Jones named in their best.

So to repeat my previous post.

Do we know why so many 1's players are not playing.

Just read this on the club site and am confused as to why...

Sophie Li
Stats: 27 disposals, 14 handballs
From the coach: Sophie had 27 disposals and three marks, proving her ability to find plenty of the football. She was able to set up at clearances and worked hard both ways in the game. Saturday marked Sophie’s last game for the Blues in the VFLW this season, and we can’t wait to see her back in the navy blue come the 2019 AFLW competition.

Is there some kind of (in)eligibility rules in place? You can't play too many games if you are AFLW listed???

From the NT Thunder website:

Under VFLW rules, each team can play a maximum of 12 AFLW players in any one game but can name more than 12 on the overall club list.

... club(s) can lodge 10 list changes throughout the VFLW season, and any updates will be announced in due course.

I’m not sure about an official limit on games played but it could be a club limit to get games into all AFLW listed players.

Cheers.

I found some country victoria regs which stated players who play too many VFLW games cannot return to play for their team in finals etc.

So it might be some kind of combination of things.

Perhaps in this case, Sophie has played her max (i think it was 7 in the league i saw) games in the VFLW and will play out the rest in her club side from here in order to be allwoed to play finals?

Sounds like a mess.

Are there plans for the AFLW to be played in winter and become the only league those girls play?

It's no different than unders grades in suburban footy or cricket, in unders you cannot play too many games in a high grade then return to a low grade for finals.

Unless your coach is Daniel Harford and your club is called St Kevins, in which case you apply for exemptions and play 24 year olds in U19 finals!
