It's hard to see 100% public trust in self-driving cars, but they are inevitable, and of course EVs are the natural delivery method for this technology.
No matter how good we think we are, how well we think we can focus and concentrate, compared to just about any working machine we are rubbish.
The vast majority of accidents, minor or major, are caused by driver distraction, inattention or fatigue regardless of other contributing causes. Much like the weight of evidence in favour of vaccines, the data is now building that in general full self-driving is safer than human driving, as uncomfortable as that may be for some it's a harsh reality of human versus machine. I travel a lot, and almost daily I see people driving on the freeway, usually in a Tesla, while doing their makeup or reading a document, it's disturbing but keep this in mind, the people who you see doing this don't stop behaving this way when they haven't access to some form of self-driving mode. Cruising down the highway at 100kph doing your makeup is not a new phenomenon, it didn't just appear with the invention of self-driving.
Another thing EVs have made worse, getting cut off on the freeway and people taking your braking space. They have so much available torque at freeway speed they can just accelerate relative to the cars around them like never before, and duck through the smallest spaces. Anyone who runs a car with radar cruise control will know what havoc this causes, truckies must be going crazy, some drivers cut through spaces many couldn't even make a park in!
I will never have faith in automated systems in that situation.
Ive seen too many machines have a "run away process" that consumes too much ram or cpu and then the machine stops behaving properly.
Lets not get started on bug and patch fixes, and the obvious cyber security issue and threat actors that could hi-jack such systems.

Originally they advertised tickets of $89 and $135 IIRC. The day they were on sale the 'cheap' tickets were $400 and the expensive ones were $600 or so.
They do dynamic ticketting i think, so the more in demand they are, the more expensive they get.
270 dollars for 2 tickets, punt road end looks like olympic stand but could be on the southern stand side. Behind the goals, they would be the "cheapest" tickets, but considering you couldn't get one...

The two are not mutually exclusive. Crimes then would occur without a police report. This means the crime never hits the news, and that was in relation to gang violence and stabbings (real problems). Including underworld shootings, where it suited people not to report it. Standover tactics etc.
You wouldnt report a crime that was hard to substantiate if you feared for your life.
These days its different, the footage is there, victims are more confident that they can get their perpetrator convicted, and ergo are more likely to actually go after them to make that happen.
Whats the impact of crimes reported in that situation? Ill give you a clue, expect more crimes to be reported.
I dont rate this government, and have backed you up more frequently than not in this thread, and will continue to do so when I agree with a non emotive presence, but what you should do is present the change in those statistics you presented over time, if you want to prove or disprove a point, and leave my point out of it. Its harder to compare to historics. You could cut it at 10 year intervals.
Something else to consider. Melbourne is nudging 6 million people. A greater number of incidents doesnt mean a statistical rise in incident per capita which is the only objective measure of safer now or safer then.
Example. Which society is safer? A population of 6 million with 200000 crimes committed per year? Or a population of 2 million million with 75000 crimes per year?
You'll hear more crime in the population of 6 million reported more frequently, but its still safer than thr alternative.
I almost got stabbed on a Tram in Hawthorn by two drunk guys as a 14 year old. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong people. Standing on a train platform at 10pm in Box hill is also something I dont recommend thanks to the drug and alcohol places around there. Ive seen kids get in knife fights at the beach. Ive seen people get beaten to a pulp. No phone cameras, none of it reported to cops as it was all argy bargy.
Still, like I said, I have no data to back up anything is better, worse same.
Now, its clips on Facebook, Youtube, instagram, tiktok. It's in your pocket waiting to be shown to you the second you go doom scrolling.

Im a pretty well travelled individual. Worked in one of the night clubs in the early 2000's, was going out clubbing during the 2000's when the underbelly stuff was all landing.
Most people were oblivious to the world. I worked in Broadmeadows and Brooklyn. Had mates that went to VU and lived in St. Albans. Another mate grew up in Doveton.
The less I write about those areas the better.
The world is the same place it used to be, but most of Melbourne had no idea. I maintain that we are more aware of things today than we used to be, as you watched the news and saw it, or you didn't back then. Cars stolen 3 times from out the front of the family home in Burwood. Ditto dads panel van in east Burwood.
I remember leaving Princes Park after a game vs Geelong and coming across a fan who had way too much to drink and not quite feeling safe at 6pm on a sunday.
You either had a false sense of security or you didnt.
My anecdotal evidence is not evidence, but it suggests that whilst a lot of the people around me were blind to the world, my eyes were open to the reality that we are all just walking along feeling a lot safer than we think we are.
There was a lot of gang violence in the 80's and 90's that didnt hit the news. More urban legends and myths than not, but fights near train stations were common place.

Confession - we left a little early - missed our last two goals - had a grumpy wife & son and an early start for a Saturday.
I understand everyone has their own reason/justification for leaving early and not wanting to judge anyone but I was very disappointed with the number of Carlton supporters that left early on Fri. Sometimes miracles do happen and don't forget Jezza (the real one) once kicked 6 goals in 10 minutes. Plus I wanted to be there to cheer our team off. Go Blues in 2027 and beyond.
Mate I was sitting there in the rain in row G on level 1 for 75% of the game, and when we fell 50 points behind, that was my signal to go because me and the Mrs were getting wet, and whilst we all support the club, every single club has fans that leave early once the game is gone.
I still think things are no where near worse than it used to be, we just have more access to information about these things thanks to CCTV, and more people having a phone camera handy, but I dont have data to back that up.
Even so, I suspect the data would be a bit of hit and miss regarding this assertion, as many historic crimes may have been unreported due to a lack of evidence.

Again, I don’t believe that I ever suggested that we were top heavy. I did point out that our ratio of talls to smalls in 2025 was similar to most other clubs.
For the record, I’m a two ruckmen kind of guy … provided that the two ruckmen can both have an impact when they’re not rucking.
This debate has waged in many threads but ill summarise as follows from my memory:
We havent recruited enough talls often enough was one perspective along with too many smalls. The opposing perspective was that we have recruited plenty of each type but all of them have shortfalls at AFL level, which results in we need more of everything.
Sometimes the argument was then paraphrased into assuming that this meant we had enough, but the reality (according to me) is, that we were gambling on our good players staying fit, because they were all guns, and then trying to fill the gaps between them. This rehash and paraphrasing is why it was a never ending debate, because as we see in this topic, the opposing viewpoint was dismissed because it was transformed into a different argument about who was more right, rather than what was more right.
Which was the most pressing need? Turns out, that both was correct on this years evidence. Im not sure we have missed the talls, but getting in Ainsworth, Florent, Hayward, Evans, Jagga and co was tantamount to turning things around because we got halfway through a list build, sacked the list manager, sacked the coach because we needed to win, and ended up with a mish mash of aging players that couldnt help us take the next step any longer and failed to fill the gaps.
I think thats about as close as it gets to summarising. The irony is not lost on me, that last season, we delisted Harry Lemmy to go with the departing JSOS, TDK and Curnow situation, and still managed to cover those absences with a delisted free agent in Wade Derkson, a draftee in Harry Dean, and what was already here, and this was the doomsday scenario of losing Weitering for an elongated period of time. Still, we do need more quality talls as on history we got a bit lucky with Mckay and Pittonet being robust, and we could use some more grunt through the running players. With Walker coming in, and hopefully HOF returning, that means we need a more project ruck forward through the draft again and as we saw on the weekend another medium swing type because Mcgovern, Haynes and Newman arent getting any younger.

Why do we persist with players that won’t be part of a premiership team?
With that logic none of our players should be persisted with.
Its the worst way to manage a list. You never go forwards because you cast off players who might have a bigger say than others at that point in their careers. Some of the guys we are going to cut are in the prime of their career and have max 2 years of their best footy in them.
Some of the guys we are going to keep are a week to week proposition.
Some of them have 10 years of footy in front of them.
Which ones isnt about whos in our next flag, its whos going to play for us next season. Guys like newman and haynes are unlikely to feature in our next flag, but come round 1 2027, they're in line for selection because they're good enough.
Thats how you breed competition for spots, and hunger to win a flag. Not by rewarding kids because they might be good enough one day, or by flinging loose 27 year olds because they arent Wayne Carey. Thats cutting players for the sake of it.
Who goes should solely be about what comes in to replace them and what else can realistically be rexruited to replace them.
It might be an unpopular opinion, but we talk about making lots of changes after going 12 wins 1 draw and 3 losses (2 in the wet which was more a game plan situation than not) so im not seeing a massive need.
We could go into season 2027 adding not much but that forming in the first 10 weeks and finish top 4.
