I feel sorry for the players having to continually change their approach to the ball for the ever changing interpretations. A classic example was in the Geelong v Dockers game. All pre-season they were talking about players who drop the knee or shrug a tackle to force high contact will now be taken to have prior opportunity and will be penalised for holding the ball. Late in the game when scores were very close, Selwood did his usual thing...dropped the knees, shrugged the tackler's arm up to force high contact and the umpire awarded him a free kick. You could see the frustration on the Docker's faces....

A few weeks back Mason Cox jumped in the air and kneed a guy fair in the back/kidneys while making no attempt to mark or spoil....and that didn't even warrant a week.

Didn't get to watch the game because of family commitments but watched the highlights....and loved the Young bump on Zurhaar....especially after some of the discussion on here during the week before the game about the likes of him. And was then staggered to see that Young gets a week? Brad Scott needs to come out this week and basically say that the hip and shoulder bump is basically outlawed from here on it even when there's no head high contact....because that's basically what this suspension is saying. If "care for the player" is what it's about then Larkey should get 3-4 weeks because that act (after the whistle too) has the potential to cause serious injury.
On a side not, was so rapt to see Jack Carroll get a debut and play so well....showed lots of compsure. I posted on here a few weeks back that he will surprise a few people this year. He's an automatic upgrade on Setterfield and should hold his spot this week even if Hewett comes back in. I think him and O'Brien could be a handy pair on the wings as they're different sorts of players but can both use the ball really well.

Our midfield should dominate but we did that against Freo too....5 of the leading possession getters were Carlton players. Without McKay they haven't got a lot of talls down back apart from Walker who's not that big anyway. Silvagni playing forward will make it even harder for them.
But Ziebell and Zurhaar forward worries me. Not sure we have players to match up too well on them as both of them are strong in the air. Parks may well get a reprieve for that reason alone.

Where we seem to be short of options is key defender and ruck. Support for Weitering is basically Young, McDonald and McGovern. If I'm a betting man then it's odds on that McDonald and McGovern will get injured again before the season is out....leaving only Young. And he might now be required to play in the ruck if Pittonet is out for an extended period.
I would've thought those would be the two positions we'd be addressing at the mid-season draft? Even last year, Boyd was a player where we already seemed to have enough options and selecting him seemed strange at the time?

Hopefully Silvagni and Kennedy are right to go. If McKay doesn't come up, one of them might have to be a forward option.
Surely Stocker gets a chance this week.
Not sure we have an ideal match up for Zurhaar either and he's a very dangerous sort. We have a habit of playing them back into form.
Do we roll the dice and play Mirkov this week especially if McKay is out? TDK can play second tall and ruck as well? They have Goldstein and Xerri and we've seen twice this year what happens when we get monstered in the ruck....we've lost both times.

The most telling thing seeing it live was the comparison between their defence and ours. We have the "names"....Weitering, Saad, Williams, Docherty". Individually, those blokes all played well but as a team defence, we were poles apart. Their system was amazing, the way they set up, they seemed to always have a spare who could run off or make it impossible for Curnow or McKay to get a clear run at it...and nothing illegal off the ball stuff. Yet when we seemed to get it, there was no real system coming out of the backline.
I lost count of the number of times Williams got it and it was a just a panic/dump kick and usually straight to an opponent. In his first season I thought Newman was a very valuable pick up but now, he just seems to be a dumb footballer. He continually ran around the back to get a short kick or handball but ran himself into a pocket on his right foot....and he can't kick on his right. Lots of time he had to double back and by then we were completely manned up.
Parks has a crack but not a smart footballer either from what I saw.
On paper, the top 5 leading possession getters were Carlton players so we got plenty of it but just couldn't use it properly.
Their was a collective groan from Blues fans when Pittonet went down and it was impossible to see us winning from that point. To his credit TDK battled manfully and did a fair bit around the ground but Darcy monstered him in the one on one duels.
And seeing it live I got to see how completely useless Setterfield was. He did absolutely nothing and there were countless times that wouldn't have shown up on the TV where he was out on a wing and just stood there....completely flat footed...didn't lead, didn't try and drag his opponent up the ground...just did nothing. It's taken him ages to get to 50 games but on the back of what he's put up this year, he shouldn't be getting too many more chances.
Newnes is a depth player at best.
Cottrell had a crack and while his disposal lets him down, he wasn't our worst player.
Full credit to Cerra who I thought was one of our best and battled hard all night with the crowd and opposition into him every time he went near it. He got caught a couple of times trying to do too much but it wasn't his fault we lost.
Would love to see the stats on how many times we lose when Silvagni isn't out there. Not just missing the backup ruckman when he was needed but his second and third efforts up forward when the ball is in dispute are immeasurable and we had nothing up forward.

Lobb will be just way too tall for Silvagni in the ruck....will just have to hope our mids can rove to Lobb's taps.
I would've had Dow in there purely for his pace factor at Optus. It's one clear advantage the Dockers have over us.
Setterfield's 50th game so I can see that as the only reason he's got another chance.
And agree with other sentiment around Plowman over Parks for this one.
