AFL Preliminary Final 2023 Carlton vs Brisbane in Brisbane.
Alas, we couldn’t manage to put it together, after a brilliant start. Too many tired, battered bodies and not enough extra spark when it counted.
Team: C+
I can’t give a higher grade for a loss, not when we kick next to nothing for 2 quarters. But that first quarter …

[0.5] Sam Docherty
[0.5] Caleb Marchbank
[0.5] Jack Martin
[0.5] Patrick Cripps
[0.5] Blake Acres
[0.5] Adam Cerra
Explanations:
[4] Sam Walsh: Probably BOG, even in a losing team, Walsh just kept getting the pill and attempting to drive us forward. 33 possessions, 6 tackles and 3 clearances is 9 possessions better than anyone else on the ground.
[2] Jacob Weitering: Kept the Brisbane tell forwards on a starvation diet and rarely got beaten.
[2] Adam Saad: Did a terrific job destroying Charlie Cameron while getting plenty of ball himself.
[2] Mitch McGovern: One of his better games in defence. His marking and creative spoiling held Brisbane to a losing score. Pity we couldn’t kick a winning score.
[1] Nic Newman: Another very solid job from one of our best.
[1] Jordan Boyd: Deserved his spot and was strong in defence.
[0.5] Sam Docherty: Doc always gives his best.
[0.5] Caleb Marchbank: One of his better games for a long time, Caleb looked to have found his groove in defence.
[0.5] Jack Martin: Probably our most effective forward for the night, which tells you just how ordinary we were in the front half.
[0.5] Patrick Cripps: Definitely not fully fit, but still gave his best and kicked 2 crucial goals.
[0.5] Blake Acres: Like Cripps, not even close to fit, but still managed to be a hero with his efforts.
[0.5] Adam Cerra: Probably our 2nd ranked midfielder, Cerra was good early.
Honourable Mentions:
George Hewett: Tried his guts out.
Tom de Koning: Tom was brilliant early, but couldn’t change his game when McInerny lifted.
Marc Pittonet: Pitto was great early, but struggled when McInerny changed his game. When our rucks lost their influence, our midfield got smashed.
Harry McKay: What might have been? H had some good patches, but his inability to kick goals at crucial times really hurt us. Still, he was much more effective than Charlie was.
Anyone else?
