Title: Give Me Something Positive!!!
Post by: Dirty Harry on March 20, 2014, 05:02:33 pm
Ok, you lot are bringing me down and its giving me the sh1ts...

All pre season Ive heard how we have recruited and drafted well, and that with a bit of luck we could go well..
I didnt really hear any negatives over the off season, or even during the NAB challenges..
I've been excited to get the footy back and Ive bought tickets to the first 5 games, but now Im starting to wish I hadn't..
Why? Because after one loss against a team who knocked off Collingwood in the finals last year, this whole site has gone into meltdown and is telling me I have nothing to look forward to for the next 3-5 years or possibly longer. It seems you guys think Mick is doing us more harm than good and isn't up to it.. Also that our list is stuffed to the point that anyone drafted in 2011 or before should be traded or delisted, and that our board and admin are a bunch of nuffies..
There is nothing but doom and gloom from 95% of the posters on here, and its p1ssing me off how most of you have written the season off after one loss.
Im starting to feel that perception is reality.. In reality we are 0 and 1. But the perception Im getting on our own site is we wont even come close to making the finals and might aswell sack the the coach and rebuild the list.
I was so enthused a week ago, but all this negativity on the coach, the board, the admin and the players is starting to spoil my whole season. So much that its becoming hard to even log on to this site. Whats more, none of you know what the next 23 weeks will bring, but most of you are certain that nothing positive will come out of it..
Its just typical week 1 loss, over reaction...

So I'm asking.... Please.... Just give me something positive that I can hold onto.
I don't want to hear any negatives in this thread, just positives. Therefore I can log onto CSC and atleast have 1 thread that will give me some joy and some hope.

I cant remember a season being written off so early ever, in my time on this site..

we're gonna smash ninethmond on the weekend. Positive.

The club is adopting a responsible approach with Gibbs, i.e. advising him that they feel its in his best interests to stay, but won't be held to ransom. Positive.

Cripps will play his first game soon. Positive.

Thats just a few, theres a few thousand more, but don't have time to list them all atm

A week is a long time in football. We have Richmond, Essendon and Melbourne coming up. All winnable (who knows what Essendon will produce and Richmond are very capable of beating themselves), we could be 3-1.

If you want positive, maybe give the forums a miss if we get a decent hiding from Richmond   :P

Didn't think there'd be a response...  :D

Cant wait for Cripps to play. Really like the look of him. He's as tall as Garry Lyon and he's a mid..  :o

With Gibbs, if we make top 4 this year, I'd be offering him a reduced contract, just to see if it really was about him seeing where the club is going.  ;)
I like what the club have said (if thats what they've said as I haven't caught u with it)

And yes, any win against Richmond is gold.. I couldn't care if its 1 point or 100 points. We just want the 4 points.

If we lose against richmond, this site will crash.. No one will be able to log on..  :D

But a win against Essendon will fix everything..

I wont even contemplate a loss to Melbourne.. .

Must admit, Beating Essendon is the best feeling (footy wise) in the world..  Richmond is 2nd.  Should be a great fortnight.

See thats what I like.. I was at the game and that 1st 1/4 was excellent pressure.. So as far as game plan goes, it was awesome.. Its just now sustaining that effort longer, which im sure we will as the boys get match hardened and fitter in the next few weeks.

Speaking of father sons, Buckley Im thinking once he gets his opportunity, will take it. Really like the look of him. Its taken him 2 years to put on some size, but I reckon he will cement a spot by years end.
With Buckley, Walker, 2E, Simpson, Yarran, Army, Garlett, Daisy, Everitt  and Docherty, our list has some serious pace in it.

Does anyone think that maybe the pre season the boys had this year has them a bit flat for the start of the year.  Brock said it was clearly the hardest pre season he has ever done both mentally and physically. He said he went mentally to places he'd never been before.
We got Buttifant from Collingwood.. It would be interesting to see how the Collingwood  players pulled up after their first Arizona trip under Buttifant.

Just as a side note, I remember Shane Crawford saying that the walk from Adelaide to Melbourne, and the ride from Melbourne to Perth he did, took him months to recover from as it was very mentally and physically draining. Now I know He was not in AFL shape, but he was generally a fit guy..  Maybe this pre season is having a bit of a lagging effect on our team seeing that a lot of surgeries were had and it was a very draining pre season. I have confidence it will benefit us as the season goes on.

All the excuses in the world can't mask the fact that we gave it up....again.

I admire your stance Jamie, good on you. Unfortunately I'm still coming to terms with our premiership window being slammed firmly shut.

Yes, those that have completed a full pre-season will show the benefits as the year progresses, but the players who've had restricted pre-seasons are likely to be playing catch-up because they won't have  the fitness base on which to build.

Look back to Port 2 years ago when Primus was in charge... They were forked. They had to put advertising over seats as no one was turning up, their list was seen as crapehouse, and they were in debt up to their eyeballs. Im sure many said their premiership window had been slammed shut for the next 10-15 years.
Now look at them.
Things can turn very quick mate. We all know that about footy. We dont know who might come on this year and take the next step..
There's a lot to like about Cripps, Buckley, Graham, Menzel etc..
Players like Ellard I think will take the next step providing he can stay on the park. Curnow has come on in leaps and bounds, and Brock has improved in the last 2 years. IMO Murphy has his best in front of him and Daisy is capable of hitting his best form again. If Gibbs goes then we get another one to replace him.. If he stays then he also has his best in front of him.
I think losing Scotto, Carrots and Judd in the next few years wont be that drastic. It will free up money and it also cuts the average age of our list dramatically whilst giving others a chance to perform in those roles..
We know Hendo is A grade, and Jamo is a decent back when on the field. Its the forward line we have to get right. Whether it be Hendo to go forward (then we need to get a key back ie Frawley), or we poach one of the GWS star forwards..  I then believe we are in contention again.

I never thought a premiership was coming in 2014, but I certainly dont agree our window has shut long term.  I dont think we are that far away. But the thing is making top four, making top eight, or being out of the 8 can boil down to 1-3 wins.  Luck is involved with injuries etc, but I just dont think we are miles away like you suggest.
Mick will cull again at years end and mould the team he wants. Atleast we know the people left are ones who want to play for him. That was a massive part of Collingwoods success. They all bought into him and all played for him.  We haven't had a coach like that since Parkin/Brittain.  I just think he needs to be given his chance.

Stay positive P2C, accepting one window is closed or fast closing,  although painful, prevents any further wasted time in taking steps to open the next one. We'll get back up there. eventualy.

I like your enthusiasm, but the gets you mention have been glaringly obvious to all here for years - these types have been overlooked time and time again
to our detriment. Frustration is we got to within a bees d1ck of a prelim, and that's it.

There were plenty of us who were concerned at the signs during the NAB Challenge... and have bemoaning recruiting and development for some time (years).

I can assure you that no-one wants to be positive more than yours truly. But the concerning signs are too glaring to attempt any positive spin.

There is hope, though, when you look at Cripps. And maybe one or two of last year's draft picks will show something.

But no matter how you look at it, based on everything to this date, we are average/ordinary. If things go our way, we might snag 7th or 8th and from there anything is possible.

Its called list management. Great recruiting, and great developing of new future guns. We can't get it working if we don't have the resources to make this side of our business work properly to result in flags. Tanking doesn't work as well as a system that allows you to select with care, and develop with ease. Game plans, culture and strategies are just the icing on the cake. if the essentials are not there, the system doesn't work. Not for any coach in any league. ;)

Even in a "give me something positive" thread, there's so much negativity  ;D time for the meds ppl.

I'm pretty positive on Cripps, and looking forward to seeing him when given the opportunity.  Just hope that Mick starts him on the ground not sub. Other teams seem to do it and do it well with their debutants so he's hoping.

Somkething Positive.

If all else fails, there is the Essendon circus going on.

Rumours that Hird has been sacked (thats a win for the Bombers really).

Aside from that, its not all doom and gloom we have a 3 time premiership coach at the helm and he won one of his flags only a couple of years ago, and won his other 2 in the early 90's.  Indicates that he should stay relevant even if he has misread where the future of the game is going initially.

Above all else, we can only get better really.  Sure we might slide down the ladder a bit, but that has as much to do with what happens around us as it does what happens with us, and given GWS and GC there are worse times to have a lean period in your history (say when your rivals challenging you to be the most succesful are up there winning flags).

Does that help Amers?

I guess we have to put it all in perspective really.  The fact that we seem to be light years away from a premiership is what is getting us down, and that is a by product of being a Carlton supporter and having high expectations based upon a history of attaining success on such a regular basis that it becomes almost taken as a given.  As people we need to just take stock of things....  we have forgotten that success is earned and how hard is the work required.  Yes the club is in a holding pattern but given the right choices we can start the road back to success.  For the older members of this site I guess at the same time there is a nagging fear of slipping back down to where we were 10 years ago... the horror of fronting up to 25 goal floggings every week and wondering if the side will even get the ball forward of centre, let alone kick a score....  I doubt we are going to ever deteriorate into such depths again so I guess that is a positive.

Anyway I will give a positive as I see it.  Kade Simpson. Reigning B&F.   Haven't seen him mentioned this week.   This bloke has been through everything and still throws himself in and keeps giving.  For a mob that supposedly can't recruit and can't develop recruits Kade has done nothing but the right thing by this club. Late pick, nobody to learn from, chucked in the deep end.  While we still have blokes like Kade running around we aren't going to become irrelevant.

Agree. Good gear and on the money.

We are at a critical stage in the club's evolution. This must be the year we find out who the hackers and non-hackers are... players, Board and all management and support staff (except for marketing/PR, they're doing great). And at year's end we bite really big bullets and heave out anyone less than excellent. Any assistant coach who isn't achieving at a really high level can FO. (Barker becomes our defence line coach and our boys down back were made to look silly last Sunday  >:( ).

Love the comments re Simpson. Spot on. Should be Captain but is probably the 'spiritual' Skipper. Our first pick when we were banned from the first two rounds and we land Simmo at 45. If we'd gotten him at, say, pick 12 you'd still reckon he was a steal. Quality bloke and player in every respect. Well said, PROFMEISTER.
