Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Bush Fires
Fly - intensity would also depend on what is burning?

I get where you are coming from, however, I can't do the maths on how much extra fuel load exists on the ground:
 - how is it measured
 - what is the baseline
 - how much is added each year if it is not burned
 - what is the rate in which fuel load 'regenerates'
 -  does drought increase the fuel load (low growth, but drier, more combustible load) more than wetter years where growth would be more significant, but may have lower combustion
 - Is there a greater chance of lightning strikes causing fires in wetter or drier years - fires caused by lightning seem to cause more damage

These questions are probably answered in research and experience.

It's been interesting reading here and elsewhere, trying to understand where people are coming from - the city v country viewpoints are quite different.  More importantly is trying to understand how the issues intertwine and which are right and which are wrong.

I certainly accept that governments and big orgs have the ability to stuff things up as they are not nimble, unduly influenced by 'lobbyists' and now much more ideologically driven rather than doing 'what is for the greater good'

It's hard to know, Fly:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-05/lack-of-backburning-blamed-for-fire-losses-in-gippsland/10869018

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-07/black-saturday-fire-fuel-threat-planned-burns-needed/10787050

We can all take out of the above whatever suits, but there are certainly points from both sides in both of the articles.  While the fuel load isn't met, is the 'average fire risk' at or below 70%? (the 2018 DELWP report says this figure 65% in 2018)

Having a quick look at the VBRC recommendations (67 of them) and then the Implementation reports, most were considered complete/closed by the 2016 report.  Closed does not necessarily mean implemented, as it includes the idea that circumstances can change, so it is no longer relevant, or a better/different solution can be implemented.

Where is the credit for much improved fire plans, warnings, management?  Loss of life is tragic given that it is fire fighters this year that have died in their desire to protect, however, it is a much smaller number than it could have easily been.

This is such a complex puzzle and it is hard particularly when there is a lot of misinformation and everytime someone says something you have to go on a 'google worm' to start to make sense whether it is believable of not.

The Sports Desk / Re: Australian Cricket - Crisis, What Crisis ??
Doctored, but by no means dangerous.  They prepare pitches to suit their players and not the opposition.  We tend to prepare pitches that don't favour us, except for the Gabba and WACA in years gone by.  Not sure if Pakistani pitches were suited to opposition, either.

India has the money...

Crazy thing about the MCG pitch is that the Vics might actually get some points.  Should be fined and warned.  Some of the balls that spat were quite nasty.

Stuffed up big time.  Even though it is going to be a different pitch for the test, they can't afford for it to be a road, as the pitch hasn't rated well for the last two tests - needs to be something in it.

There would be some other states that can't wait to take over the boxing day test from us if we can't get the pitch right.

Our opposition made 4/408 from 72 overs. One batsman made 211, with only 2 of our blokes clapping the 200.  When we finally got him out,  I made them Clark him off the ground - you might not like the innings that you've seen,  but you have to respect it.   Wr had plenty of opportunities to get him out  but hadn't taken them.

I hate the idea of Warner holding the record  but you have to respect what he did.

Ladies Lounge / Re: AFLW - Contract Dispute
You could start the AFLW season from the bye weekend after the H&A fixture.

Showcases the competition on a dead weekend before the finals, then gives fans something to watch during the finals if their team isn't playing in AFL finals.  Effectively, finding five weekends of crossover...then AFLW continues through Spring until Xmas.

I think they want the AFLW players to be available for the VFL and other state comps, as depth is still an issue - but may not be long until depth arrives.  But wouldn't it be great one day to have all AFLW games as the curtain raiser.  Then sometime in the future have their standalone games.

The added element in length of season is that for the 2020 season there are 2 more teams, but no more games.

Can't agree more with the women - they are being shafted - AFL/PA isn't taking them seriously.

Ladies Lounge / Re: AFLW - Contract Dispute
From what I gather, the group of players aren't going against the AFL, they are going against the AFLPA for not representing them properly.  Breaking away from the AFLPA or setting up a AFLWPA was seen as an unwanted option.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Brownlow Medal Thread 2019: Can Crippa get it?
Congratulations to Fyfe who won well and spoke very well.

Hawthorn had 14 players poll.
Carlton, Port, Richmond and St Kilda had 13
Everyone else except Melbourne (7) and Gold Coast (5) had 10-12 players get votes.

Carlton finished 12th in terms of total votes for clubs and 15th for average votes per player (4.62)

Not that you would use Brownlow votes as a metric, but we did better than our finishing position on the ladder.

Foakes isn't playing for England as you can't have Foakes, Woakes and Stokes in the same side (although they have).

One thing that isn't mentioned is the notion of the test world championship that is going on.   There will be mysterious points and rankings, however it does mean that there is no such thing as a 'dead' test, as the result goes to the world championship.

The last test showed that we don't really care about it (maybe nor does the rest of the cricket world)

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Cleaning Spectacles
My struggle with glasses when I got them 20+ years ago was my first cricket net sessions.  I had been used to seeing a big blurry thing come at me.  All of a sudden it was a small round object.  Took me a while to adjust.

In terms of cleaning - depends what it is.  Often I just blow on them - gets them foggy and dry with a tissue.  You can get glass cleaner fluid from optometrists - spray one wipe off.  I also use toothpaste and an old toothbrush - scrub in wash off, dry.  If I can't be bothered, I just go around with dirty glasses.  Got used to not being able to see properly - trying to clean sweat/rain from glasses while playing sport is a disaster - makes them heaps worse, so just put up with it.

Sons suggestion does have merit! (but don't admit it to him)
