Jim Park Voting; Round #8 Carlton vs. Geelong

There were some signs of improvement last night, but the result was the same. It really does make going to the football a masochistic exercise, instead of the stress management and enjoyment it has been for so long. It is time to record our opinions as to our performance.

Remember:
[1] At least 3 players need to get a mention.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player.
[3] Give a rating of team performance. It can be anywhere from A+ to F. Please don't leave this blank. Our guys do not deserve the default setting (B).
[4] Votes must add up to 15.

Oh well, I may as well start: I did start this thread.

Team:   E
Even though the result was poor, I thought  a number of our players did a bit better and appeared to care a bit more. Docherty was on the ABC and you could tell it really hurt him.
Unfortunately they couldn't miss and we couldn't kick a goal to save our collective lives. Scoreboard pressure makes a lot of difference.

Votes:
[4]   Simpson
[3]   Curnow
[1.5]   Armfield
[1]   Murphy
[1]   Menzel
[1]   Tutt
[1]   Yarran
[1]   White
[0.5]   Warnock
[0.5]   Cripps
[0.5]   Docherty

Explanations:
[4]   Simpson:   31 possessions and some great marks, this effort was a real come back to form for Simmo. he did spoil it a bit in the last quarter where he stuffed up about 4 times in a row, but until then he was excellent and a great contributor with pace and dash.
[3]   Curnow:   Really took Selwood apart. Selwood got some frees (when doesn't he?), but in general play he was totally ineffective. Curnow was quite effective, except for his shot at goal.
[1.5]   Armfield   Took Motlop apart. Armfield showed enthusiasm, pace and concentration to totally blanket Motlop, who couldn't even con the ump into giving him some freebees.
[1]   Murphy:   Worked hard in the midfield, but was always under pressure.
[1]   Menzel:   Menzel kicked 4 goals and could have got 6 or 7, but he really didn't do enough. His kicking for goal from set shots was more consistent, but the results had a lot of improvement in them.
[1]   Tutt:   For the 2nd week in a row Tutt showed he isn't quite the dud we thought he was. he does have his issues: he appears to panic in some situations and fumble, for example, but he did a lot more than many others.
[1]   Yarran:   Yazz can be very frustrating. He did some really brilliant things, but he was also quite soft in patches. However, his pace and willingness to gallop off down field really hurt Geelong - right up to the point where we turned the ball over.
[1]   White:   Shared the jobs on Clark and Hawkins and did a pretty solid job.
[0.5]   Warnock:   Won his taps and did so reasonable things around the ground. OK.
[0.5]   Cripps:   Not his biggest night, but he did some very nice things.
[0.5]   Docherty: Solid.

Honourable mentions:
Everitt:   Everitt's first half was actually pretty good, but after half time he was a total non contributor. Soft and doesn't work hard enough.
Jones:   Jones played probably his best game for Carlton last night (not that he has anything to beat). He took at least 7 marks and did a lot more work. However, he got his kicks a long way from home and his kicking for goal was excruciatingly poor.
Tuohy:   Zach tended to run himself into trouble last night, but he did try hard and he never dropped his head.
Gibbs:   Bryce started quite brightly and gave Geelong some trouble early in the game, but he hurt his back and struggled after that. He was substituted off after half time after not featuring at all from about the 18 minute mark of the 2nd quarter.
Thomas:   Started very well, but really died out after half time.

Other Comments:
The Umpires: How did these peaniuts get a job at this game? The umpiring has been pretty good this year and certainly has not been the downfall of our team. But this set of 3 idiots seemed to be at another game entirely, or on something with an alternate reality effect. They cost us perhaps 1/3 of Geelong's score.
Levi Casboult: had a shocker. he seems to be killed each time against Harry Taylor.

Curnow 5 (for sticking to a role)
Simpson4
Menzel 2
Armfield 1
Tutt 1
Jones 1 (effort in the goal square against two opponents was great stuff)
Yarran 1 (playing angry but working hard. The 50 m penalty against him was a poor decision)
