Title: 2014 Jim Park Medal - The winner is ....
Post by: crashlander on March 17, 2014, 07:33:10 pm
Guess I have to start this off. Pity our effort was pretty lousy. I will update this file, like usual, as we go along.
Not looking forward to this week's results.

Carlton vs. Port Adelaide: not quite what we were looking for to start the year.  >:(

Votes:
Curnow, Edward 310
Ellard, David 291
Gibbs, Bryce 128
Waite, Jarrad 102
Simpson, Kade 99
Murphy, Marc 77
Jamison, Michael 48
Warnock, Robert 45
Yarran, Chris 45
Robinson, Mitch 10
Bell, Tom 10
Henderson, Lachie 6
Walker, Andrew 3

Not a huge spread of votes, nor a big spread of voters, but I am sure things will improve as we start winning games.
Next week against the Tiggers wills tell us a lot about what our season is going to be like.

Updated to show a couple of late voters. I'm hoping for a bigger response after the Richmond game, because there is always a more positive response when we win!  ;D ;D

Of course, we need to fix up a lot of problems before then, but hope springs eternal.

Round #2: Carlton vs. Richmond
Still a failure, but we really came home quite well.
Also, thank you to the voters this week. As expected, a LOT more people bothered to vote this time. Unfortunately, we still couldn't get things right!  >:D >:D

Votes:
Murphy, Marc 333
Yarran, Chris 272
Buckley, Dylan 108
Simpson, Kade 86
Curnow, Edward 72
Everitt, Andrejs 72
Jamison, Michael 67
Bell, Tom 51
Henderson, Lachie 42
Warnock, Robert 31
Lucas, Kane 4
Menzel, Troy 4
Thomas, Dale 4
Robinson, Mitch 2

Actually there was a wider spread of votes in Round 1 - 4 more people got votes against Port.
Murphy and Yarran managed most of the votes, but last week's 2nd best, David Ellard, and 3rd best, Bryce Gibbs, had shockers and were voteless.

Progressives:
399 - Murphy, Marc (0)
392 - Curnow, Edward (0)
313 - Yarran, Chris (0)
287 - Ellard, David (0)
182 - Simpson, Kade (0)
148 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
109 - Jamison, Michael (0)
108 - Buckley, Dylan (0)
99 - Waite, Jarrad (0)
72 - Everitt, Andrejs (0)
57 - Bell, Tom (0)
52 - Warnock, Robert (0)
48 - Henderson, Lachie (0)
11 - Robinson, Mitch (0)
5 - Lucas, Kane (0)
5 - Menzel, Troy (0)
5 - Thomas, Dale (0)
3 - Walker, Andrew (0)

Of interest was the way the votes changed on the spreadsheet - I'm always finding something different.

Seriously, it is close at the top between Murphy, Curnow, Yarran and Ellard. It will be interesting to see who can keep up the momentum.

Carlton vs. Essendon: Round 3 Misery:
Seriously this was one of our poorest efforts at a time where something else was really required. You can tell from the number of voters: 12. A couple of usual suspects commented that things were too bad to give votes, while others voted with their feet.
Hopefully this week will give us more pleasant thoughts and better things to vote for.

Another little statistic: this game had the lowest rating of any game since I started  doing the voting. And it would have been much lower of some people had actually rated their votes. That says a lot.

Votes:
Menzel, Troy 198
Gibbs, Bryce 185
Simpson, Kade 137
Murphy, Marc 117
Walker, Andrew 66
Carrazzo, Andrew 56
Henderson, Lachie 41
Jamison, Michael 30
Buckley, Dylan 30
Bell, Tom 20
Rowe, Sam 18
Warnock, Robert 8
Waite, Jarrad 5
Robinson, Mitch 3

I was quite surprised that Menzel ended up topping the votes, and that Lachie Henderson managed 41 was amazing. However, that was how they came out. It shows how ordinary we were.

Progressives:
516 - Murphy, Marc (0)
392 - Curnow, Edward (0)
333 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
319 - Simpson, Kade (0)
313 - Yarran, Chris (0)

Carlton vs. Melbourne - Round 4 Misery:
Truly an embarrassment to everyone involved. We did as poorly as any Carlton team this century, after a pretty good 1st quarter.
As a result, we didn't get a lot of voting. Only 8 people voted. That says more than anything about the dissatisfaction with the game.
I can understand that. However, it was pretty ordinary.

Votes for this game:
Simpson, Kade 234
Yarran, Chris 176
Curnow, Edward 157
Buckley, Dylan 48
Gibbs, Bryce 38
Henderson, Lachie 38
Rowe, Sam 26
Tuohy, Zach 13
Warnock, Robert 10
Casboult, Levi 10

Carlton vs. Western Bulldogs: Round 5 Celebrations!
At last, a win. Pity I didn't see any of it. We did pay the price: Judd, Bell, Curnow and Ellard now lost to injury. However, a win is much better than a loss.
We had 12 voters this week, 50% up from last week. Hopefully there will be more people voting again in the weeks to come.

Votes:
Murphy, Marc 339
Henderson, Lachie 327
Warnock, Robert 199
Gibbs, Bryce 198
Curnow, Edward 143
Tuohy, Zach 68
Bell, Tom 38
Simpson, Kade 23
Walker, Andrew 15
Lucas, Kane 15

Progressives:
854 - Murphy, Marc (0)

576 - Simpson, Kade (0)
559 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
490 - Yarran, Chris (0)

268 - Warnock, Robert (0)
202 - Menzel, Troy (0)

26 - Lucas, Kane (0)
13 - Robinson, Mitch (0)
10 - Casboult, Levi (0)
5 - Thomas, Dale (0)

There was an extremely small spread of vote getters this week. Was that my fault? I couldn't vote realistically as I didn't see the game, but I do often spread the votes around.

Carlton d West Coast Rd6 Jubilation!

Sorry it has been a while coming up. This file is at home and I am working in Melbourne during the week at the moment, so it only gets updated at weekends. My apologies again.

A bigger spread of votes this week: a pretty good effort all-round. However, Murphy was clearly the choice of BOG. It has been pretty close at the top, but this effort should give Murph a decent lead for a little while.

Rd 8: Carlton vs. St. Kilda on a Monday night at Etihad.
The Blues have a good win, but it could have been a lot better. I guess it shows just how far off being a top 4 team we still are at the moment.
However, we managed to have a lot of contributors and a back line that worked well.

Still not a lot of voting: I guess a LOT of people were not all that happy. Having been there myself, I can understand how frustrating it was.

On the other side of the coin, Doc, Menzel and Buckley sitting in the top 10 reads pretty well to me.

Fair call Krudd, but:

[1] Thomas: he was always going to be a slow starter to the year. If he is at the same level this time next year, then we are screwed.
[2] Walker: something of a disappointment, but still a contributor.
[3] Garlett: the big fail in this cohort, The Prince has not played anywhere near his best and could not dominate in the VFL. At the moment, he would be the biggest disaster of our year so far.
[4] Waite: probably not behind Garlett by much in the disaster stakes. We needed a real forward target and Jarrod has not delivered.
[5] Carrazzo: coming back from long term injury, it was always going to be a slow start for Carrots. That he has managed 140 votes in 2 weeks is actually a very positive step.

More of a worry is that
(a) Broke McLean is behind Sam Rowe, and Broke has not been one of our poorest performers.
(b) Hendo has as many votes as he does, considering he has had a very poor season.
(c) Robbo has scored so poorly, as he is a measure of how our team is feeling.
(d) Zac Tuohy has barely had a vote. After last year he was expected to be a much better performer.

Our voting system does give a decent indication of how the team is faring, and it does look like too much is being left to too few too often.

I gave Touhy a vote for keeping Bruest quiet ....
He has been playing better in recent weeks and he did a good job on Bruest for most of the night. However, he is a long way from his best form.
In some ways he is forced into a tighter 1 on 1 role than he prefers as we have not had a small defender who is quick and tight down there with him.

Round 14: Carlton loose to GWS in Sydney

What can I say? It was a lousy day to follow the Blues as we fall to a team that Richmond defeated by around 100 points. I find that bizarre, as Richmond have won fewer games than we have. However, that does not make us play better or them play worse. The result: close again, but just not worth that much.

It also scared off the voters in droves. This has been the smallest turnout since I have inherited the job of collating the votes. Only 7 people bothered to vote.

That makes me ask questions: have we lost interest in the Jim Park Medal? Will the voting output improve if we start winning? or is it going to get worse if our performances do not improve significantly, playing kids or not?
These are question that need to be addressed, but not here. This is my chance to rave and rant and analyze the voting.

Speaking of votes:
Robinson, Mitch 280
Gibbs, Bryce 242
Menzel, Troy 163
Everitt, Andrejs 84
Thomas, Dale 70
Judd, Chris 47
McLean, Brock 37
Tuohy, Zach 14
Rowe, Sam 9
White, Simon 9
Jamison, Michael 9
Waite, Jarrad 9
Curnow, Edward 5

With a very low rating for the game, the low voter turnout really resulted in very few votes. Robbo, as leader of the week, would normally be expected to poll around 400 votes. On a really good week it can get close to 600 votes. Not this week.
Also very much the case was the big difference between us, the voters, and how the match committee saw the same game. Waite got dropped, yet I gave him a (small) mention. I thought Hendo was worse, but he survived for another week.
Certainly both of these guys are so far down on their performance compared to last season that it is hard to recognize them as the same players.

And now for the Progressive Votes:
2202 - Murphy, Marc (0)
2147 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
1580 - Simpson, Kade (0)
1118 - Yarran, Chris (0)
696 - Curnow, Edward (0)
653 - Menzel, Troy (0)
522 - Warnock, Robert (0)
497 - Everitt, Andrejs (0)
469 - Buckley, Dylan (0)
454 - Henderson, Lachie (0)
451 - Robinson, Mitch (0)
441 - Docherty, Sam (0)
400 - Rowe, Sam (0)
354 - Judd, Chris (0)
346 - Carrazzo, Andrew (0)
324 - McLean, Brock (0)
293 - Ellard, David (0)
292 - Casboult, Levi (0)
270 - White, Simon (0)
262 - Jamison, Michael (0)
245 - Thomas, Dale (0)
189 - Walker, Andrew (0)
165 - Garlett, Jeff (0)
161 - Waite, Jarrad (0)
114 - Bell, Tom (0)
55 - Tuohy, Zach (0)
39 - Lucas, Kane (0)
37 - Armfield, Dennis (0)
17 - Scotland, Heath (0)

Gibbs has moved up on Murphy and could well overtake him this weekend, if his run of form continues. Simmo is in 3rd place, but he is stagnating after one of his worst ever games. Yazz is well clear in 4th, but things are pretty tight for 5th spot.
Near the tail of the ladder, Walker, Garlett, Waite, Bell, Tuohy, Lucas and Armfield have garnered votes, but nothing compared to their efforts in recent seasons. Scotland still has a presence, even though he retired months ago.
15 players on the list have not managed a single vote, even though the team has been crippled with injuries. Of those 15, 11 have not played a senior game this year.
This year's statistics do not make good reading.

Crash,  unless I see the whole game I do not think it right to give votes.  I suspect that may also apply to others, hence the low voter turn out.

Likewise. Never give votes unless I watch the entire game (at least once).

That is OK. It may be that the Jim Park medal may need to go into recess for a while. Or we star winning more games, so more people get to watch whole games.  :) It is entirely up to you, the voting public: I'll keep doing it as long as it is something that is thought to be worthwhile. But if it is not, then so be it.

Carlton fail against Collingwood: Rd 15 Disaster

Once upon a time a 'disaster' was a 'bad star'. A bit of trivia to stimulate the thought processes....

Thanks to everyone who voted this week. After all, it was not a fun time on Sunday night. Yet, we managed to take it up to a mob who have finals' pretentions. I think we have shown that they really are pretenders, but where does that leave us?

Votes:
Judd, Chris 305
Yarran, Chris 297
Gibbs, Bryce 193
Robinson, Mitch 134
Rowe, Sam 104
Murphy, Marc 22
Jamison, Michael 19
Simpson, Kade 15
Everitt, Andrejs 11
Curnow, Edward 7
Warnock, Robert 7

A very small spread of votes, with Judd and Yarran clearly the preferred options, followed by Gibbs, Robbo and Rowe. After that was just making up the numbers. Very rarely have the votes followed such a distinct pattern.
It also begs the question about where we are without Judd. He has been back for 3 weeks and is obviously not even close to match fit, yet he has been right up there each time. I think that, more than anything else, makes Malthouse's point for him: we need more talent.

Progressives:
2341 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
2224 - Murphy, Marc (0)
1595 - Simpson, Kade (0)
1415 - Yarran, Chris (0)
703 - Curnow, Edward (0)
659 - Judd, Chris (0)
653 - Menzel, Troy (0)
585 - Robinson, Mitch (0)
530 - Warnock, Robert (0)
509 - Everitt, Andrejs (0)
504 - Rowe, Sam (0)
469 - Buckley, Dylan (0)
454 - Henderson, Lachie (0)
441 - Docherty, Sam (0)
346 - Carrazzo, Andrew (0)
324 - McLean, Brock (0)
293 - Ellard, David (0)
292 - Casboult, Levi (0)
281 - Jamison, Michael (0)
270 - White, Simon (0)
245 - Thomas, Dale (0)
189 - Walker, Andrew (0)
165 - Garlett, Jeff (0)
161 - Waite, Jarrad (0)
114 - Bell, Tom (0)
55 - Tuohy, Zach (0)
39 - Lucas, Kane (0)
37 - Armfield, Dennis (0)
17 - Scotland, Heath (0)

Murphy and Gibbs still lead the way, although Gibbs has finally overtaken the Captain. Basically there is a large gap behind these guys to Simpson and Yarran (great to see Yazz up there!), followed by the peloton. The numbers also clearly show the relative falls of guys like Mclean and Walker, and the huge drops of Waite and Garlett. We really need some guys to stand up and provide that X factor required to get over the line.

15 voters this week and they got in nice and early. I guess when only 29000 get to the ground, it suggests that there may not be a large voter turnout.

Carlton fall to Sydney: A nightmare if there ever was one.
However, we did get 13 voters this week, which is an improvement considering our poor performance. Perhaps the next set of results will be more pleasant.

Votes:
Dominated by Gibbs and Murphy. Not surprising considering how they played and what we produced in the 3rd term.

Gibbs, Bryce 367
Murphy, Marc 262
Casboult, Levi 142
Simpson, Kade 71
Henderson, Lachie 42

Carlton loose to Fremantle in Perth: So near and yet so far!

We had 15 voters this week, with a generally positive feel, even though we lost. Hopefully we can turn it around next time and show that we can win close ones.

Votes:
Judd, Chris 393
Simpson, Kade 341
Murphy, Marc 212
Thomas, Dale 109
Waite, Jarrad 73
Yarran, Chris 54
Gibbs, Bryce 45
Curnow, Edward 39
Carrazzo, Andrew 33
Docherty, Sam 27
White, Simon 18
Wood, Cameron 12
Rowe, Sam 3

Not the largest spread of votes that we've had, but Judd back on top and showing why he is the champion he is, gave the voting a different look to it.
Cameron Wood was again recognized for his work, even though he was flogged in the ruck taps.

Progressives:
3048 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
2863 - Murphy, Marc (0)
2186 - Simpson, Kade (0)
1606 - Yarran, Chris (0)

Carlton defeat Gold Coast and expel them from the finals:
With only a couple of round to go, things are heating up in the Jim Park medal voting. More voters and better scores reflect the better efforts of recent times. May they continue.
Votes:
Judd, Chris 337
Waite, Jarrad 308
Simpson, Kade 255
Bell, Tom 158
Thomas, Dale 97
Murphy, Marc 84
Gibbs, Bryce 47
Wood, Cameron 16
Rowe, Sam 13
Carrazzo, Andrew 13
White, Simon 5
Sheehan, Ciaran 5
Curnow, Edward 3

Judd and Waite brings back memories of past glories with 300+ games. Gussy Sheehan managed to get on the board, while Dale Thomas and Tom Bell produced arguably their best games in our colours.

Progressives:
3095 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
2947 - Murphy, Marc (0)
2441 - Simpson, Kade (0)
1606 - Yarran, Chris (0)
1422 - Judd, Chris (0)

39 - Lucas, Kane (0)
37 - Armfield, Dennis (0)
17 - Scotland, Heath (0)
6 - Sheehan, Ciaran (0)

The race for top spot is well and truly on. Third place is pretty much settled, but 4th and 5th is again very tight.

Carlton just fall short again against the Cat's Meow.

Lots of votes this week as we just fall short of another top team. So near...

Votes:
Gibbs, Bryce 335

Murphy, Marc 108

Docherty, Sam 23
Jamison, Michael 14
Sheehan, Ciaran 12
Simpson, Kade 9

And that means the progressives go like this:

At this point it looks like Gibbs will win his first Jim Park Medal, but who knows?

Carlton loose to Port Adelaide in probably our worst effort for the year.

Votes:

Wood, Cameron 63
Curnow, Edward 38
Judd, Chris 29
Carrazzo, Andrew 9
White, Simon 7
Tuohy, Zach 5
Graham, Nick 4

With such a small spread of votes and vote getters, and Murphy's going off with concussion:
3707 - Gibbs, Bryce (0)
3055 - Murphy, Marc (0)
2450 - Simpson, Kade (0)
1667 - Yarran, Chris (0)
1596 - Judd, Chris (0)

37 - Armfield, Dennis (0)
17 - Sheehan, Ciaran (0)

Gibbs is out to probably a winning lead. Murphy won't catch him in the last round, while Simmo has had a couple of shockers in a row.

The Winner: Bryce Gibbs
Gibbs was winner by 800 votes! A big effort with everything that went on for 2014. Hail!

2nd place: Marc Murphy
Couldn't win because he missed the last game again, with injury. Still, a very good effort from the Captain with the promise of more in 2015.

3rd place: Kade Simpson
Not a patch on last year. In fact 2014 contained some of his worst ever games. But Simmo is a trouper and a real leader for our club. His ability to get the ball week in, week out was excellent!

4th place: Chris Judd
Considering that Judd missed half of the season and was not match fit in any single game, his effort were heroic. had the season lasted another month, we would have given Gibbs a real challenge for top spot.

5th place: Chris Yarran
A much more consistent season in 2014. Look forward to more next year.

Congratulations to all those who managed to get votes: it is a more than creditable effort to catch the eye and hold it. Well done.
Hopefully there will be more votes and more voters in 2015!

Thanks for the effort Crash, much appreciated !!

Worthy winner Gibbs, he had a good and reasonably consistent year, as a midfielder, showing some the reasons why he was a number 1 pick. There is still room for growth, so all the best to him and onward and upward for him in 2015 !!

x2..Have not been a true believer in Gibbs but he has lifted this season and attacked the ball better than most on our list and deserves the B&F as well as the prestigious Jim Park Medal. ;)..
