AFLW 2023 Rd 4: Carlton vs Geelong at Carlton

Our first home game for the year at 14:35 on Saturday.
Geelong were finalists last year, so we won't be going in as favourites. They are short on ruck talent, while we are reasonable in that area.
Hopefully, Geelong will be Felis Domesticus this weekend.

This week's team sheet. Take from it what you may.

B:  [27] Gen Lawson-Tavan  [21] Harriet Cordner
HB:  [6] Gab Pound  [9] Kerryn Peterson  [18] Madeleine Guerin
C:  [17] Dayna Finn  [12] Jessica Good  [4] Keeley Skepper
HF:  [25] Keeley Sherar  [22] Mia Austin  [26] Tarni Brown
F:  [8] Celine Moody  [3] Darcy Vescio
R:  [16] Breann Moody  [10] Mimi Hill  [5] Abbie McKay
Int: [36] Ciara Fitzgerald  [49] Madeline Hendrie  [13] Lulu Beatty  [14] Marianna Anthony  [20] Lily Goss
EM:  [11] Yasmin Duursma  [23] Lila Keck  [1] Amelia Velardo

I don't take much about the positions: Good is not going to start as a centre, for example.

Disappointing our off-season 'gun recruits' via trade/draft are sitting on the emergencies - Duursma and Keck

Its looking like a well balanced side (Good excluded)
Vescio getting pushed back forward after failing at a midfield role (again) is probably the end of that experiement.

Cats are a good side, albeit without Georgie this week....and we are at home.

Who knows.

29-5 final score.
Kept the cats goalless.

We dominated the cats through all the conditions Melbourne can throw out there.

Guerrin, Hill, McKay and Sherar dominated the midfield against a Prespakis-less Cats.
Bree Moody and Good dominated the ruck giving them first use.

Celine Moody and Vescio need to lift. Not getting enough from these big names.

I only saw bits and pieces but from what I did see it appeared the gal's defensive pressure was really good and they seemed to be hand-balling more into space, breaking the game open and spreading, rather than those dinky handballs into trouble? Good win.
Only our ruthless best, from Board to bootstudders will get us no. 17

The girls were very slick which is a big contrast to to week 1 and even an improvement on last week.
Cats couldn't pick up the thing.

I haven’t seen the game but hopefully we are seeing the intended system, as opposed to the chaos that ensues from errant disposal
Let’s go BIG !

Good result following last week's win. Looks like there is some improvement in the team.

Great win by the girls, particularly in the conditions; hail, horizontal rain, biting winds and bright sunshine!

Our midfield has really come together and we have four genuine guns.  Still not the complete team, but we're a step closer.
“Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don’t you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?”  Oddball

Maddie Guerin was superb, and we have a strong advantage in the ruck which will give us a chance in most games.

Compared to the top teams, though, we still have a lot of players whose skills are rudimentary at best (especially in the back half).  When the heat is on, they turn the ball over or fumble at crucial times.

When the ball gets in the hand of McKay, Guerin, Hill, Sherar or Vescio, good things usually happen.
This is now the longest premiership drought in the history of the Carlton Football Club - more evidence of climate change?
