AFL Rd 9:   Carlton vs Melbourne
Rating:      B+
We dominated the game until the last 10 minutes and should have won by more.

Votes:
[2]   Jacob Weitering
[2]   Patrick Cripps
[2]   Sam Walsh
[1.5]   Oliver Hollands
[1]   Matthew Kennedy
[1]   Adam Cerra
[1]   Matthew Owies
[1]   Charlie Curnow
[1]   Marc Pittonet
[1]   Alex Cincotta
[0.5]   Nic Newman
[0.5]   Mitch McGovern
[0.5]   Blake Acres

Explanations:
I didn’t really have enough votes this week to reasonably cover the way our players performed over most of the night. We really did have some great performances.
[2]   Jacob Weitering:   The most dominant player on the ground. He destroyed his opponents and provided a lot of drive.
[2]   Patrick Cripps:      35 possessions, 5 tackles, 5 clearances and could have been more if he’d got a free or two.
[2]   Sam Walsh:      34 possessions, 11 tackles and 5 clearances. Says it all.
[1.5]   Oliver Hollands:   Probably his best game. He was fantastic early, but lost influence as the game went on.
[1]   Matthew Kennedy:   Extremely solid in the middle.
[1]   Adam Cerra:      We lost drive from the middle when Cincotta went off. He was excellent.
[1]   Matthew Owies:   3 really important goals.
[1]   Charlie Curnow:   One of his better gams for the year, even though he didn’t get heaps of the ball.
[1]   Marc Pittonet:      Worked well against Gawn. When he was off in the last few minutes, Gawn got on top.
[1]   Alex Cincotta:      Deserves a lot more than 1 vote for destroying Pickett. A really good job in shutting him down and doing some great defensive work.
[0.5]   Nic Newman:      Solid
[0.5]   Mitch McGovern:   Brilliant early, showing why he is so important to our defence.
[0.5]   Blake Acres:      Did some good things and won his position.

Honourable Mentions:
Brodie Kemp:      Deserves a mention for destroying his opponents.
Jordan Boyd:      Like Kemp, he deserved a lot more than just a mention.
Tom de Koning:   Dangerous as a forward, not so great in the ruck.
Harry McKay:      A solid target at CHF.

AFL 2024 Rd 8:   Carlton vs Collingwood
We lost by a kick and should have won, but really didn't play that well.

Trends:
[1]   There were 15 voters this round, which is pretty good for a loss. Traditionally, fewer voters bother when we lose.

[2]   The rating was a 8, which is an C. This is the 2nd time in 2 weeks that we averaged a whole number!

[3]   13 players managed a mention this week, which is only one less than last week. Again, it suggests that a lot of players made a contribution. The difference was that nobody seemed to dominate.

[4]   The average vote this week was 26. This is the second lowest of the year so far.

[5]   5 players managed 100 votes or more this week. This usually indicates a win, but even these 5 voters were not as outstanding as others have been this season.

[6]   Harry McKay was BOG this round with 260 votes . the other 4 100+ vote getters were all around the 160 mark.

[7]   No player managed votes from everyone this week. A number of guys got close, but nobody was so significant that everyone recognized it.

[8]   Not a lot from our younger players, as far as votes so anyway. Cincotta managed a mention, as did Elijah Hollands.

[9]   Our defenders were the main area of vote getting, which suggested that the ball was spending too much time down there.     :'(

Many found wanting tonight, but the main concerns will be Weitering....
and Walsh

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's hurt that back again.
There was definitely something wrong, and it wasn't just after that heavy bump near the end

Walsh says it's fine...

In some ways Trump is quite unique, in other ways he is properly representative of a growing global trend for leaders as right wing populist, buffoonish caricatures : South America, India, Italy and many others. I would include ScoMo in this as well. The triumph of spectacle and corporate tyranny, extolling the virtues of Neo-liberalism and a non reality based world view.

If Trump wins Ukraine is finished, eastern Europe is in trouble and the knock on effect will promote others to jump the fence and start problems.  I fear for us.   Big enemies and no assistance forthcoming.

Putin is trying to complete Stalin's plans from 1945.  Who thinks the tanks are going to stop at the Moselle next time?

Ukraine is of strategic importance bordering NATO countries, has shared power grids that Russia feed and Putin wants his place in history like other Russian leaders and wants to be a war hero. Russia also have a massive say in world economics via Gas, Oil etc and that affects us all. He wants to reclaim rogue ex Russian states and have the old USSR back together.

Without being overly dramatic...Folks probably said the same thing about Czechoslovakia and Poland in the late 1930s.
Once Ukraine is 'annexed' where to next for a Russian president who seems intent on 'returning' Russian borders to something resembling the USSR
The most shocking thing about this is how long it took for mainstream media to realise Putin has no target boundary, he won't stop.

Trump's charges are real, and he might suffer financial penalties as well, the only thing saving him from the wolves is the fear they have he might again be President and abuse his power to take revenge on them, that's what is broken in the USA political system, it's fairly obvious.

The bulk of the allegations against US officials are fake, made up by huckster lunatics and Russian operatives on social media, if you believe them you are just a pawn in the international game of politics and power. But they don't have to fear the bulk of Trump's competitors including Biden, because they are nobodies and unlike Trump they aren't on the revenge radar.

I laugh at people who seem to think Trump is going to fill pockets full of cash, he will but only his own, and he does that by employing Mexicans and West Indians at 1/2 local wages. He wouldn't stop to piss on an American citizen on fire, he'd probably command the security staff not to waste the water.

There significant irony in Trump boosters accusing Biden of devilish financial deeds, as far as I can tell, Biden is just a milder / moderate version of Trump. At the top end of US politics, they all are mild versions of Trump, because they are all motivated by wealth and power, they just aren't as extreme as Trump!

Why is Ukraine anyone else's problem?

There is a pretty good reason why we should be concerned.
There's a good reason why the American response is important...because there may come a time when we need to be concerned about the strength of our own relationship with the USA.
