Quote
But what are the rules clubs face when it comes to losing players through expansion?

Each player in the competition has been assigned a points value which is calculated based on age, payment tier, career games and any awards they might have won.

To keep their first round draft pick for the upcoming NAB AFLW Draft, existing clubs must lose a total of 28 points worth of players.

Should clubs not reach that threshold, they will go to the draft without a first round selection.

Clubs can lose a variable number of players in line with this points system, based on recent successes and location.

Quote
Each of the top seven teams from the past two seasons combined may lose (via expansion) a maximum of:

Four players if in Victoria, Queensland or Western Australia
Eight players if in New South Wales or South Australia

Each of the bottom seven teams from the past two seasons combined may lose (via expansion) a maximum of:

Three players if in Victoria, Queensland or Western Australia
Six players if in New South Wales or South Australia
We fall into the bottom category and can lose only 3.
We've already lost 2 in Prespakis and Gee.

This system is crap. Top teams can lose more players, thus are more likely to reach the 'threshold' of 28 points, thus more likely to keep their pick.

So much for getting extra picks for losing players, we will be lucky to KEEP our existing first round pick only if we lose enough talent.

Well, I wasn't going to state as much, but we know how the infiltration of the Big House works in exactly the opposite way that the Fitzpatrick tenure didn't work for us!

Is there some irony in Fitzpatrick seemingly traversing a line of good governance and ethics, as an example of how it can be done correctly after decades of earlier crookedness, only for the crooked to resume normal business the moment Fitzy departed?

In effect Carlton have endured decades of pain while Fitzpatrick taught then the difference between right and wrong, all for nought. One might even suspect some at our club are fans for flagellation!

Clearly CheatsFC have no conscience, they are using the Big House infiltration and politics to propel themselves out of the mire at orbital velocity.

Some rumoured movement for us.

Lauren Brazzale to the Magpies (to play with her best mate Downie no doubt)
Amelia Velardo (magpies) back to us.
Apparantly Velardo she is a 19yo midfielder who has played 11 games.

I don't mind that trade as we need more mids with Prespakis, Gee and Greg (supposedly) all out of our current midfield.
Brazzalle (28yo) is an original gamechanger, but she has reached her peak and will not take us to the next step. Hard runner with a big boot, but accuracy is not a strong suit.

In other news, Charlotte Wilson looks set to go to Melbourne. Another one who can't kick and despite dominated 2 seasons ago, took a back seat with the revelation of Paige Trudgeon who is an upgrade in every area.

We are supposedly chasing 36yo Phoebe McWilliams from Geelong. She sits in the top 10 AFLW history for goals and would be a much needed target up forward to help Vescio.....especially with Stevens also on the way out (to saints, apparantely).

Also....
Courtney Jones is set for a move to Gold Coast during next week’s player movement window.

She spent 2 years on our list doing nothing. Got a gig last season and dominated up forward with her marking and attack on the ball, and accuracy in front of goal. Another one who will hurt us.

I must say I have found this all a bit disheartening, it has an air of pseudo-professionality, it looks a bit like they want the big dollars but they want the fantasy, but perhaps without the hard work required or demanded of them from an experienced AFL coach.

Should I pity them, sook it up, or become bitter?

PS; Brooke Walker bails out.

Walker will only be gone for a few rounds at the start of the year to play NRLW.
TBH, its probably a good thing which allows us to try a few players before trying to shoehorn her back in. She underperformed last year and perhaps 'a big pre-season' playing rugby is going to be a big benefit to her footy career.
I know previously though she (and Chloe Dalton) have talked about the differences in playing weights for both sports and the difficulty 'gaining' for rugby and then having to 'shed' for AFLW. So perhaps we'll see a 'thicker' Walker next season?

I suspect though she will struggle, as she did last season missing for other reasons, at the highest level of a sport regardless of the relative sport continuity is everything.

Looks like we lost enough talent to keep our first rounder (That sentence still makes me shake my head)

That means our first pick is pick 21!
Although it is essentially 10th from the Vic based draft.

Not sure how we can replace both Prespakis and Gee with pick 21 (or pick 10 in vic draft) though.

So Essenscum get to pinch another side's best talent,  then get an early draft selection,  while the robbed party gets nothing?

On what planet is this anything like a fair or reasonable exercise?

Surely this is a piss take,  I can't take the AFLW seriously if this is so.

I find this just too much. I can't take this seriously either, no matter how much I've been involved. We should get the #1 pick for losing Prespakis. Simple as that. Anything is just ridiculous.

We should hand the keys in and ask for a refund on the licence,  the "competition" (sic) is a farce,  totally rigged. The AFL suits buggered this totally, for their own grubby little club agendas.

At this stage the agenda is mostly about collecting sponsorship cash, nothing more nothing less.

Unfortunately, the AFL have chosen to focussed on the marketing and spin, and not really pushing very hard on the quality of the product, it's like a cheap drop of $5 red being flogged in a $40 bottle.

I feel sorry for the girls, because really they aren't being respected as sportspeople, at least not if you measure things globally, they'll be happy with the cash but with that cash (no matter how little or how much) comes expectations of performance and loyalty, and the fans won't forget no matter how much the AFL hopes the fans stay quiet and respectful.

As a hypothetical, how many on our own list for example measure up to the bags of cash?
( Yes, I get it that the cash isn't really in bags and bags but that reality won't help them in front of grunt supporters! )

As such I think the girls are about to get a gob full of reality, if they thought things were bad for Tayla in social media, something she could easily just turn off if she chose to, wait until they are stuck in the middle of an MCG full of gold-digger abuse with nowhere to hide!

I'm not sure how else they could have done it.
In and ideal world we could have started all the teams off at the same time and the player movement would probably not have been as dramatic as it has turned out.
But with new teams entering the competition there will always be losses to the established clubs.
With hindsight, we perhaps should have waited and been the beneficiary rather than the ravaged.
But on the plus side we've got a lot of the basics up and running.

Don't invest too emotionally in this side for the next couple of years.
We've stripped it back to the skeleton and we'll see it fleshed out in the coming seasons....but it will be a legitimate Carlton side.
It will be one we can watch develop, knowing that the player movement will be a lot more settled...and we will have 100 game+ female Carlton players forging their own history....not 30 game 'fly by nighters'.

Wrote a long missive/diatribe which the  computer ate.  Very upset about AFLW on many levels.

Very annoyed that the foundation clubs (particularly Pies and us)  that put the hard early work in to advance female sport, retention,  respect,  equality etc are now being treated as a vehicle by other clubs for talent, or by some individuals to get some place else. A lot of selfish and cannibalising behaviour which is quite frankly, repulsive. Reminds me of vultures mobbing a carcass. What's in it for us now Gil, now that we're just regarded as a developmental feeder club for everyone else?

ALFW is hurting other sports at the grassroots level.   Is it helping retain 14-15 y.o. girls playing sport (something I feel strongly about)?  Maybe.  Is it dragging more girls into sport?   Don't know.
Is it dragging players across from other sports?  100%, and the effects of this are really noticeable.   The double season is really impacting other traditional sports.  Common coaching issue now at start of preseason training: "where's X,  she could make state if she works on stuff now?"  Reply: "nah, she's at the Falcons mate,  going try and get drafted".

I've heard players and parents openly state on the siddlines "there's money it" or "they give me free stuff,  like boots".  So what was traditionally a time for off-season development (critical in many sports for 13-16 y.o. bracket)  for say tennis or netball or cricket or whatever is now being chucked for footy.

So ALFW might be appear great at the surface,  but I get the feeling that the robbing Peter to pay Paul aspect of footy is being swept under the carpet.

While it’s disappointing to lose prominent players, it’s inevitable with the competition’s expansion.  It’s also understandable that players will seek to maximise their opportunities and rewards.  That’s particularly so with older players who are being overtaken by new recruits with better skills and footy nous.

I suspect that the competition will be more even this season with Adelaide, Melbourne, Freo, etc losing their list advantages.

Well you don't get that many good players leave for no reason.
True, but I can't assume the reason is purely internal, there appears to be a bias in the state based drafting system that is being manipulated by the girls and their managers and leveraged by the start-up clubs. You can't blame them they are working within the system.

Given they have had such a big pay rise, why is the where and when of being drafted even a consideration now, shouldn't those rules be erased?

Money changes everything, be careful what you ask for, it might ultimately remove your rights, like playing for the team you barracked for! ;)

PS; Where were Chiocci's rights years ago?
Title: Re: AFLW off-season - Signing, trades, draft....

The hardest part of all of this is the inability to draft in players anything close to those that you lose.

When Gary Ablett left Geelong, they got 2 first round picks back.....and they got their normal first rounder as well.

We lose the equivalent in Prespakis and get to keep our only first rounder.
We end up losing Gee for free....who should get a first round compensation herself.

Gary Ablett <-> 2 first round picks, plus normal one
Prespakist <-> 0 first round picks, keep normal one.
Gee <-> *crickets*

Of course the fact the draft isn't national yet, hamstrings you more.
I'd like to see the participation levels for each state, divide that by the amount of teams in that state and see the ratio that creates.
Guarantee you SA will have more players per team than the rest of the clubs. Thats clear as day when you look at why Adelaide have been so dominant thus far. Its been a state side!

Another day, another couple blues out the door.

As mentioned previously, Lauren Brazzale (28yo) is out the door, reuniting with her mate Downie at the pies and picks 38 (21 in vic) and 89 (47)
Coming back the other way is Amelia Velardo (20yo) and pick 73 (39).

Also, we've traded out Wilson in a 3-way trade for pick 42 (23)
Carlton
IN: Pick No.42 (No.23 Vic)
OUT: Charlotte Wilson

Geelong
IN: Jackie Parry + Shelley Scott
OUT: Jordan Ivey + Pick No.51 (No.26 Vic)

Melbourne
IN: Jordan Ivey + Charlotte Wilson + Pick No.51 (No.26 Vic)
OUT: Jackie Parry + Shelley Scott + Pick No.42 (No.23 Vic)

Carlton has now lost Maddy Prespakis and Georgia Gee (expansion signings to Essendon), Nicola Stevens (St Kilda), Charlotte Wilson (Melbourne) and Brazzale over the past few weeks, with Grace Egan (Richmond) and Courtney Jones (Gold Coast) also expected to move.

The Blues are likely to gain Phoebe McWilliams from Geelong. The veteran key forward has not yet been offered a contract by the club, meaning she could walk as a delisted free agent if a deal is not reached.

If as an AFLW fan you take a global view, you could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that being part of a clique plays a far far bigger and more important role in AFLW player trade and movement than many other aspects of list management and decision making. But would you be wrong?

Age works differently in the womens game.

Last year we lost Tayla Harris.....we basically replaced her with Nic Stevens.
This year we lost Nic Stevens....we basically replace her with McWilliams.

We do have a couple kids/developing players for the long term, so its a good pickup.

Our main targets last season were Vescio, Stevens and Jones.  Next season it will be Vescio, McWilliams, Jones and, hopefully, Gibbs, plus Moody and Good (who were there last season of course).  That’s a more potent forward line, but we’re going to need some grunt in the midfield to get the ball into our forwards.

Very much so. Have matching tattoos on their feet that says so.

When looking of these rumours of Maddy p to essendon started, the first thing I said was to make sure we made gee happy as that was what we needed to keep Maddy.

Gibbs and Good are our developing talls, with Milford in the list as well.
Mcwilliams is just keeping the seat warm for one of them to come through, ideally 2.
Vescio can play anywhere. It shows how desperate we've been that we've had to play her at ff.
Last season she was supposed to play up the ground, but perhaps Gibbs sitting out the year changed those plans on us.

We bought in 2 average players, one at the very end of her career. The club now expects us to get excited about a few higher picks in a watered down draft. I don't get it.

So... inseparable AFLW players get matching tattoo's on their feet! Now that makes it official. I'm totally unable to make sense of today's young ladies 🤔

All our picks look to be good 24x7 footballer types, we've obviously got a team first focus and they are all hard working types that look like the type that will be there when you need them.

Pretty obvious based on what is happening with coaches and administrative structures that we are playing the long game at Carlton.

Soon the renovations will be finished, the academy will be up and running and the teams will have facilities second to none staffed with the best of the best.

Well be cherry-ripe to go just at the moment things start becoming more professional for the girls.
