Title: VFL 2023 Rd 12 Carlton vs Essendon at Carlton
Post by: crashlander on June 08, 2023, 08:31:28 pm
We won't be starting favourite. Very interesting to see who plays this week.
They're lower than us, but we aren't playing that well.

B: Akuei Young Silvagni
HB: Cowan Fisher Plowman
C: Binns Cunningham O'Brien
HF: Honey Fogarty Motlop
F: McMahon Crocker Lemmey
R: O'Keeffe Dow Kennedy
INT: Sinnott Ramshaw Ronke Parks Cahill
Emergencies: Gill Stevens Dozzi Prout Porter Mills Leiu Lewis

IN: Cahill Dow Fisher Kennedy Motlop O'Brien Silvagni Sinnott Young

Well, this is the list for the game in its present form:
Kennedy, Young and Motlop won't be there for starters: they are the interchange players for the seniors.
I think Dow will probably be the sub, so I doubt he'd be there either.
We usually leave out one guy as an emergency, in case of a late injury; so that means that one of Silvagni, Cowan and Fogarty won't be out there.
That makes the line-up looks a little different.

No Mirkov, which worries me. He isn't mentioned in the injury list, but this would be the second game he's missed. O'Keefe is a very raw and undeveloped ruckman, so we aren't going to get the superiority in clearances we require. Lemmey will probably be his backup. So most of the 'emergencies' will be playing.

Never knew Fisher had a right foot. That right-footed delivery went 45m right to the spot. Looked very natural.

I'd say Dow is the sub tonight.

Must have a few JJ Liston Trophy votes this year.

Honey has a look about him that really looks like he doesn’t give a fark.

Never gut runs never puts a hard tackle on and whenever he misses had little to no emotion.

Good to they kick for goal like our seniors....lol.

Anyway, we kick one finally. Usually dominance gives us alot of points then the other side goes down and kicks one against the run of play. This time that didn't happen for a change and we got a goal.

Had that look at U18 level...thats why he didnt get drafted, probably have the same look when he gets delisted although the way we manage our list he will probably get a 5 year deal...

Gill also has more than one familial link in Navy Blue: his great grandfather, Frank Gill, is a Hall of Fame at Carlton with 205 games. His uncles Barry and John also played in arguably the Blues’ finest-ever triumph: the 1970 VFL Grand Final.

Was it his father too, Barry, who played in the 1970 GF? Thought I heard that on the commentary.

Cuningham has been very classy but its the same deal as always, one bad knock and back to square one. Id play him next week vs GC while he is firing and fit.
Fogarty is a goer, lacks class but you get effort....

I like the new full forward from the mid season draft for Essendon in Jayden Hunter...kicks like an arrow, taken 9 marks and he will be playing senior footy sooner than later and I still reckon Nick Bryan is a ruckman who should be playing senior football every week and Id be interested in taking him off Essendon if TDK leaves.

Bryan is much too good for this level.
Good in the ruck and picks up lots of possessions around the ground.

Cunningham's class and speed is evident, if his body can hold up he should be in the 1s maybe after the bye. He possesses everything we lack, his problem (like Martin) is just being able to play 2 or 3 games in a row. He was saying in the post match interview he has missed 18mths with a calf.

The one in rd 22 last year against Melbourne that cost us the match was highlighted on all the shows and he hasn't learned from it.

Id be playing him next week while his body is travelling well.......GC dont play a heavy gamestyle and I think its now or never for him. Id have Fogarty in as well and if Cahill was a listed player Id be playing him too.

It's a bit of a shame some of the players developing very well in the VFL aren't our listed players.
There are quite a few who look likely.
I guess it's the expense of supporting that second (and third tier) comp that stops it from being a total club project as in the old days, where players could progress through the under19's to reserves to seniors.

Only Barry, John had already retired.
When I first started following Carlton our backline was

Ian Collins, Wes Lofts, Robbie Walls
Barry Gill, John Goold, Kevin Hall

Barry's standout feature was his receding hairline, but he was a very good and dependable half back/back pocket and dual premiership player in an outstanding backline.

Cuningham demonstrated why he could be an AFL player but 'one-paced' Dow probably won't.

Cunningham has burst and is able to create space and time for himself after winning the ball; he can even break a tackle or two.

Cowan had a decent game.

O'Keeffe looks to have more potential than Lemmey, who looks very stiff in his movements.

Akuei has athletic ability (plus the skinniest calves in the AFL) but doesn't seem to have much football nous.

Honey doesn't do enough and, if he can't kick goals, he doesn't even rate a game in the VFL.

Fogarty has his limitations (especially in the pace and acceleration department) but I think he has more to offer than Dow - especially in the way he uses the ball and fights for it.

I like Lemmey's kicking though which was elite at U18 level but seemingly being dragged down to Carlton level as the weeks go by.  He shows a bit in the ruck to suggest he could develop into that KF/relief ruck we crave.  Also showed ability to swing back at U18 level.  All in all plenty to work with.  O'Keeffe I am not sold on. Akuei great athlete, great tryer but zero footy nous.  Honey just goes missing far too much even at this level.  Fog as you say is limited but surely deserves a shot at the firsts for consistent performance at 2s level.

Surely Fog has to get a game next week, at least he tackles with intent.

Ed was picked to do a role, didn't even lay a tackle. Running around like a headless chook and endlessly fumbling is not AFL standard  Epic fail in my book.  That's the kind of rubbish effort that has left our club broken.

EB...Jaiden Hunter was drafted out of Perth FC over here. Been on the list but missed nearly two years of footy with injuries. Started this year and played 3 reserves games and then kicked multiple goals in 3 league games including 5 in the win over South Fremantle a couple of weeks ago....he was plucked by Essendon 5 days later. He's a really likely type and reckon he'll take over from Weideman in the Essendon AFL side before the year is out.

For sure Surfie, he is a good footballer in the making imo and will be playing senior football soon. Weideman is a spud and wont ever make it as a KP Forward. Id be trying him down back if I was Brad Scott and trying him as a CHB given the Dons have no real tall key defenders.
