The Christchurch one I missed being hurt in a collapsed roof of the Riccarton Mall shopping centre food court by only about 5 minutes. Today I noticed the rubble and felt a gradual build up over several tens of seconds, in NZ they tend to be quite a bit more abrupt. Luckily I wasn't there for either of the big ones.I've experienced quite a few in Indonesia as well, but they are different too being some being related to volcanoes so they often have lots of little lead up rumbles.I suppose it always depends on how far away you are and how deep it is.
