Blah-Blah Bar / Re: General Discussions

I was talking to an associate about domestic violence, they spend some time volunteering in shelters so they see a lot of the effects up close.

They mentioned the current media calls for stronger penalties are completely misplaced. The problem is that the offenders are not in a stable mental space already. His fear is then that if the penalties are stronger the situation will become like the regions with death penalties in the US, in those regions offenders (insane as they may be) conclude if you are going to do the time then you may as well do the crime. In domestic violence law this could be very bad for victims.

My friend would much rather see the use of monitoring devices for repeat offenders, much like the ankle type trackers used in early release. He said it's very rare that the victims of domestic violence are victims of a first offense. Most of the bad cases turn out to be recidivists. He also said legal papers and orders do nothing, a piece of paper is of no use in defence against a knife, gun or fists of someone who is otherwise not quite right in the head!

Check out Celine Moody speaking about ANZAC Day on the club website.

She is a very thoughtful, composed and articulate young woman.  I would have been a gibbering idiot if asked to do that at her age.

How do we feel about S Durdin, Lewis and Kemp being in charge of looking after Cameron and Hawkins??  Simple answer, cut off their supply!! Easier said than done. If Weitering is out, our 'next man up' mantra will be tested to the max!!!

We did OK with Weitering missing at the start of the season.

As good as Hawkins is, he does rely on players up the ground and, if we can get on top, he can be starved of opportunities.

Cameron is a different kettle of fish with his ability to win the ball and create opportunities up the ground.  While it's not an ideal match up, Young is probably best able to go with him.  Alternatively, Kemp runs with Cameron when he plays up the ground and Weitering or Young pick him up inside 50.

Vossy seems very confident that both Williams and Weitering will play.

AFL Rd 6:   Carlton vs GWS
Rating:      A
An injury depleted team takes on an undefeated one and, but for a ten-minute period in the 2nd quarter, crushes them. We certainly picked up after last week’s failures.

Votes:
I know we have 15 votes to play with, but there simply aren’t enough to reward everybody adequately.
[3]   Patrick Cripps
[3]   Sam Walsh
[1.5]   Marc Pittonet
[1.5]   Tom de Koning
[1]   George Hewett
[1]   Matthew Kennedy
[1]   Jordan Boyd
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp
[0.5]   Matthew Cottrell
[0.5]   Harry McKay
[0.5]   Ollie Hollands
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow
[0.5]   Nic Newman

Explanations:
[3]   Patrick Cripps:      One of the great games: 39 possessions, 13 clearances, 7 tackles. Crippa did it all.
[3]   Sam Walsh:      Almost as good as Cripps, which says something. 35 possessions, 6 clearances and 4 tackles.
[1.5]   Marc Pittonet:      One of Marc’s best ever games. He not only dominated the taps, he got the ball around the ground.
[1.5]   Tom de Koning:   3 goals in itself would be a great return, but his ruckwork really shows how much he has improved.
[1]   George Hewett:   Most other week, George’s numbers would be worthy of 3 votes. An excellent game!
[1]   Matthew Kennedy:   Celebrated his 100th game in style, bot on the ball and in defence after injuries to Williams and Weitering.
[1]   Jordan Boyd:      Played a lot of the game on Toby Greene and minimized his effectiveness.
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp:      Superb job in defence.
[0.5]   Matthew Cottrell:   Not huge possessions, but almost every time he got the ball we scored.
[0.5]   Harry McKay:      Started slowly, but showed how dominant he can be in the air.
[0.5]   Ollie Hollands:      Started slowly, but came into the game and did some really clutch things.
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow:   3 goals 4 points: should have been 7 goals.
[0.5]   Nic Newman:      Another Nic Newman game. You know what you get each week with Nic.

Honourable Mentions:
Elijah Hollands:      Possession were down a bit, but 2 great goals and a solid performance.
Lewis Young:         Stepped up when it was needed. Very good.
Jacob Weitering:      Struggled with injury, but still did a job.
Lachie Cowans:      I wanted to give Cowan votes. He did an excellent job and showed a lot of poise and determination.
Zac Williams:         Apart from one bad mistake, Zac was pretty good until he was injured.

I mentioned my brother because peacekeepers are the theme of this ANZAC Day.  He also served in the Army and Air Force but was very proud of his UN service and very pleased when it was officially recognised.
I have another associated who is / was involved in forensic accounting, tracking and tracing money laundering / corporate theft by  drug cartels or some foreign governments like North Korea, etc., etc., also counterfeiting of both currency and high priced goods like wine or pharmaceuticals. They also train foreign governments how to do this type of forensic investigation.

On arrival at some foreign destinations, private or commercial travel, they are / were at such risk from cartels they get collected off the tarmac by armoured convoys before the aircraft ever reaches the public terminal / gate.

When this ends, they can't ever receive public recognition for their work because the risk never ends even in retirement. They effectively become captive /  hermits in their own land. I understand why they can't be received publicly, but to me they are not rewarded anywhere near enough for the ongoing risk. Oddly, they never ask for reward, they do what they do out of service to the community.

Concerned

If those big forwards are off the leash then Curnow may be required back to help out a little more than just the cameo.

Hopefully fingers and toes crossed Weitering gets up.
