Rating: C+ We lost by a goal to last year’s premiers and probably should have won. Granted that we were nowhere near our best, but we led for most of the game. We weren’t dreadful. Still it was disappointing.
Votes: [2] Sam Walsh [2] Nic Newman [2] Harry McKay [2] Jacon Weitering [2] Blake Acres [1.5] George Hewett [1.5] Marc Pittonet [1] Tom de Koning [1] Alex Cincotta [0.5] Matthew Owies [0.5] Patrick Cripps
Explanations: [2] Sam Walsh: 33 possessions and 8 clearances suggested Walsh was pretty good. Pity about the last 90 seconds. [2] Nic Newman: 32 possessions and 6 tackles, and more metres gained than anyone else, but he was a little fumbly and not at his best. [2] Harry McKay: Dominated and kicked 4. Pity his last attempted pass was to nobody. [2] Jacon Weitering: Close to BOG. Slaughtered his opponent. [2] Blake Acres: 32 possessions and a magnificent last quarter, but was fumbly before that. [1.5] George Hewett: A solid job in the middle. 30 possessions, 5 tackles and 6 clearances. [1.5] Marc Pittonet: Brilliant early and was the best ruck on the park. [1] Tom de Koning: Tom’s game as a forward was actually pretty good. He was the worst ruck on the ground by some margin, but he did get a fair bit of ball. Too many fumbles up the ground. This vote is just for his forward play. [1] Alex Cincotta: Did a job and did it brilliantly. [0.5] Matthew Owies: 3 goals was great. [0.5] Patrick Cripps: Tactics holding Cripps out of it were questionable, but Cripps was really good early and tried his guts out all night.
Honourable Mentions: Elijah Hollands: Not a bad job. Adam Cerra: Solid in the middle, but lacked the flair he often has.
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos: [1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less. [2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps) [3] Three players at least must get a mention. [4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.
AFL 2024 Rd 7: Carlton vs Geelong I am really disappointed to have lost this one. We did so much right, yet our mistakes cost us the game. Geelong were very much up against us, but we should have been too.
Trends: [1] There were 15 voters this round, which is not that bad considering we lost. I'd love it if more people gave their opinions, but I'll take what I can get. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. Believe me, it is appreciated.
[2] The rating was a 8.16, which is just higher than a C. Pity we couldn't reproduce last week's effort, but we may have been a little harsh, considering who was available.
[3]12 players managed a mention this week, which is just two less than last week. Again, it suggests that a lot of players made a contribution. It was the mistakes that killed us.
[4] The average vote this week was 24, which equals our yearly low. It does tell how we feel our players fared.
[5]6 players managed 100 votes or more this week. This is very good, but it does suggest that more could have been done by the others.
[6] Patrick Cripps managed 315 votes to be BOG this week. Behind him things were quite close between Walsh, Weitering and Pittonet.
[7]Two player managed votes from everyone this week. Pittonet missed from one voter, as did Weitering.
[8] Elijah Hollands was probably the youngster who stood out, followed by Jordan Boyd.
[9] Our midfield totally dominated the voting. Only one forward (H) and one defender (Weitering) really stood out.

This week's line-up: B: [17] Brodie Kemp, [23] Jacob Weitering, [2] Lachlan Cowan HB: [39] Alex Cincotta, [11] Mitch McGovern, [24] Nic Newman C: [4] Oliver Hollands, [9] Patrick Cripps, [13] Blake Acres HF: [21] Jack Martin, [10] Harry McKay, [20] Elijah Hollands F: [44] Matthew Owies, [30] Charlie Curnow, [12] Tom De Koning R: [27] Marc Pittonet, [18] Sam Walsh, [7] Matthew Kennedy Int: [37] Jordan Boyd, [5] Adam Cerra, [46] Matthew Cottrell, [29] George Hewett, [19] Corey Durdin

My thoughts: [1] Ollie Hollands is very lucky to be there. Extremely lucky. I would have preferred Binns: he is getting 25 - 30 possessions each week. [2] Cuningham is a little unlucky to be dropped, considering that it was his first game back. Also, his disposal and decision making was a step from what some of the others were doing. [3] Young wasn't our worst last week, but what killed him was his lack of attack on the ball on the ground. In the air he wasn't that bad, but on the ground he let Collingwood players in a number of times because they wanted the ball more. There has been a lot of comment about Young, some of it he deserves, some he does not. He has his strengths, and they are in the air. Also, he didn't turn the ball over that much. But his ground player cost us last week. [4] Fantasia shouldn't get back into the team until he starts kicking goals, and not just one per game. He might be working hard defensively, but that's not why he is in the team. Getting less than 8 possessions and no goals just isn't something we can maintain. [5] Our defence looks quite flexible, which isn't always the case. McGovern and Kemp are good 'ins', as they can attack as well as defend. Cincotta really did a job well last week, even though he didn't get a lot of ball. I'd like to see him confident enough to run off guys as well as shutting them down. [6] Martin is a big 'in' as well. He can do things the other small forwards can't.
An improvement over last week. Some positives: [1] Binns played mainly midfield rather than wing and managed 26 disposals and 8 tackles. 2 goals didn't hurt either. He's not a clearance king yet, but he is developing. [2] Brodie Kemp had 13 marks and 8 tackles. If he needed to show something, he did. However, I still think he wasn't that tight. [3] Dom Akuei had a career high 18 disposals and actually wasn't that bad. [4] Our rucks were much better this week, getting their hands on the ball first. If we had someone who could clear the ball consistently ... [5] Billy Wilson also had a good game and 27 possessions. His opponents got a bit of the pill, but it was a promising effort. Billy is a guy who could be useful as he has real pace.

I posted this last night, but it seems to have disappeared.
Docherty is a cool head in the heat of battle and I think we saw Pendlebury provide that for Collingwood and the goal he kicked was massive under real pressure. JSOS gives you options and you know you will get a contest from him..
We badly miss Docherty. He is a steadying influence and he does the clutch things that win and save games.
We miss Jack Silvagni, because he can do all sorts of the jobs. Our 3 tall forwards are not the problem in themselves, although I was bitterly disappointed in Charlie tonight. He doesn't work hard enough when he doesn't have the ball. It was really obvious. And when he could have stood up, he was beaten in one on ones and the ball left our forward line too easily. The problem with our forward setup is that our smalls are not keeping the ball in and they're not being dangerous. H played a great game, but his last kick into the forward line probably lost us the game. Had he been able to get his kick to advantage of one of our players, we would have won the game than and there. Instead, he turned it over and the ball went up the other end. Hell, if he'd bombed it and he scored a point, it might have been enough. But just giving it away was lethal.
One of the things that was really obvious was our lack of leg speed. Another was that we didn't tag Nick Daicos. Smother Daicos and they lose that midfield drive.
Well we should give a 3rd pick + Williams + 30% of salary to whoever wants to take him.
Enough is enough.
Williams disappointed tonight. He hasn't got his form back yet. maybe he needs some time in the 2's to get confidence in attacking the ball. I'm not willing to throw the baby out just yet, but he needs to regain his touch.
Cincotta didn't provide much drive, but he controlled his opponent for all but about 2 seconds. Cowan wasn't that bad either. He did a job, but he's not providing much drive either. Weitering obliterated his opponents. he was the best defender on the ground by kilometres. Nic Newman got a lot of ball, but was always under pressure.
Pies' system of ball movement, defensive plan and set up is far superior to ours. They were the better team, quite clearly so I'm afraid
Our midfield is slow, our release and spread horrible and defence has broken down completely. Other than Weeters, our backs aren't winning or halving contests consistently. Our small forwards -2 of three anyway - were $$@ing useless. And they're slow and apply no pressure. Fantasia is a joke.
There system and their attack on the ball was incredible tonight. last year, we were the hunters and it made a difference. This year they were hunting us and they worked out ways of making our mids ineffective. All of our mids got plenty of the ball, but they didn't use it well. Collingwood got more out of their mids, especially when it mattered.
Free kicks: I wondered which game the Umpires were at. They ignored so many frees, and not just ours. And the ones they paid were quite often tiggy touchwood. Not pleased with his for the 2nd week in a row.
Our small forwards, Durdin did some nice things, just not enough of them. he was much better than he has been because he didn't stuff up. That said, he's there to kick goals and he didn't get any. Fantasia, I don't know how he gets a game. he has to go when Motlop is fit. We can't keep carrying a guy who gets less than 8 possessions each week and doesn't kick goals. His shot could have been the difference, and it wasn't that far out, but he failed. Matt Owies kicked 3 and didn't make any shockers either, but isn't getting the ball enough. Cottrell had his worst game for the season. He just couldn't get near the ball. It was the run their opponents got that really hurt us. David Cuningham didn't do enough, but the things he did do were pretty good.
With Fogarty and Motlop in, we'll keep the ball in better and have some x-factor, which we lack badly.
Lack of run - Pitto couldnt take a mark to save his life.
When Pitto was in the ruck, he had the better of the Collingwood talls and he provided most of our clearances. he didn't do a lot around the ground, but he didn't let the Collingwood rucks do much either. Pitto was our best ruck by far.
Tom had a shocker in the ruck. The few taps he got went straight to Collingwood players. Cameron, in particular, dominated him and got most of his taps against him. In the forward line, however, Tom had a great day. He was a dangerous target all night, kicking 2 and missing one. He got the ball around the ground quite a bit, but fumbled just so much. He couldn't take a mark around the ground to save his life, tonight, and marking is one of his strengths.
I wouldn't be discarding Pitto. He had 15 possessions and 6 clearances! Granted that he wasn't as effective as he has been: Collingwood worked out some tactics that minimized our mids' effectiveness. In particular, they made Cripps play to his weaknesses instead of his strengths.
