Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 0R 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Brisbane v Carlton
I’d make a couple of key positional changes -  TDK into CHB, which requires Pittonet to play and I’d be very tempted to bring Cowan in to play on McGregor and Docherty or Cotts on Coleman. Will be very tough!

Some may say 3 big men will make us overly slow, but the side below has plenty of run and let’s hope Fantasia turns it on.

Boyd Young McGovern
Williams TDK Saad
Cottrel Cripps Acres
Cowan Curnow Docherty
Durdin McKay Kennedy

Pittonet Hewett Cerra

Newman Hollands Cunningham Fantasia

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Pick your best 22 of 2023 - Part 1 - Pre-season
Best 22 (ex Silvagni), noting I’d probably play Lewis Young full back Rnd 1 rather than Marchbank.

Kemp Weitering Boyd
Saad  McGovern Docherty
Cottrell Walsh Acres
Motlop Curnow Martin
Durdin McKay DeKoning

Pittonet Cerra Cripps

Newman Cunningham Hewett Kennedy

Others at AFL standard
Def - Cowan, Marchbank, Young, Williams, Cincotta
Mid - Hollands x2, Binns
Forward - Fantasia, Owies

Motlop should be starting in the team, Marchbank is a strange selection imo.
As I said previously I would have wanted Kennedy in the team..
Dow is unlucky and if he doesnt play finals will be elsewhere next season imho.

Cunningham, Owies and Marchbank very lucky to be selected, but all can play, so fingers crossed

I would have found room for Motlop and Dow to provide a bit more foot speed

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 14 2023 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Gold Coast
Out - Acres, E Curnow, Motlop, Silvagni, Young
In -  Dow, Binns, Cowan, Cunningham, Pittonet,

Arguably we're facing a very simple equation i.e. Poor game plan +  only 1 AFL standard small forward + average Ruck + 1 AFL standard key back + poor foot speed across the field + raft of players who can't kick or handpass accurately + raft of players who cant make good decisions under pressure + material portion of our salary cap invested in players who are out of form.

With the exception of the game plan, lets discuss in turn
(1) Small forwards - we'd hoped that Honey was the answer and watched Durdin emerge last year, but both are not there for different reasons and it has hurt. Motlop needs time to develop. We need to delist Honey, develop Motlop in the twos and go with makeshift forwards in the meantime that can at least hold the ball in our forward half or have enough pace to pressure the ball carrier. Consider Dow, Docherty, Cottrell, Boyd, Cunningham.
(2) Average Ruck - we may have signed him for 4 years, but Pittonet is just an average AFL ruck, light years behind a Gawn, Darcy etc. TDK is flashy but delivers little & Okeefe and Mirkov are a mile off. We'll need to trade for a decent ruckman at year end.
(3) Key Defensive backs - Young and Durdin are simply VFL players at best & S Durdin is way too slow for AFL. McGovern can't be trusted at all in defence, despite this narrative that he's great for our structure. We'll need to trade off our forwards to address our backline. Consider converting one or more of our talls to key defenders & Mcgovern or Kemp forward.
(4) No pace - Pace gives you time and space and our lack of pace across the ground is consistently putting us under pressure. We cant carry Cripps, Kennedy, E Curnow, Weitering, Silvagni & Acres. Obviously Dow should come in and Cunningham should come in as soon as possible and we should inject some youth in Binns and I would also give McGovern & Kemp a run through the midfield from time to time.
'(5) Disposal and decision making - Probably our biggest issue and the hardest to resolve. All of our highest paid players, with the exception of Cerra, are guilty of of this. Whilst Cripps, Walsh, Docherty & Acres may have good stats, they repeatedly let us down with poor decisions or disposal at critical moments which is in stark contrast to Collingwood's leaders. Acres is a bust.

Laugh if you like, but I'd be putting more faith in the side below than the tripe that we've been watching for the past 8 weeks'

Preferred side:
Boyd Weitering Kemp
Saad  TDK  Cincotta
Walsh Cerra Cunningham
Cottrell Curnow Docherty
Owies Mckay McGovern

Pittonet Cripps Dow

Cowan, Kennedy, Binns & Martin

Make it happen!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 12 Post Game Passing Carlton vs Melbourne
The game plan is in tatters and our season is officially over

There is simply not enough movement ahead of the ball and limited defensive structure behind it - Carlton have absolutely no idea how to create space for players to run into and lack creativity and dare. We are boring and predictable to our opposition and everybody watching the game.

Acres is so slow and is officially a liability
Walsh has fallen so far it’s not funny, ditto Kennedy
Our rucks and small forwards are not where we need them  to be
Dow is in our top 10 and we play him in the 2s??

All so depressing

Whilst speculation, the fact that Dow is not even listed as an emergency makes it clearer that his unwillingness to entertain a trade on a lower salary last year appears to have resigned him to playing 2s all year

I suppose that from his perspective he can collect his cheque, play well in the 2s and set himself for a tilt at a more amenable club.

We’re so stubborn

Interesting you say the three butchered the ball, I agree about previous weeks but Acres ran at 96DE% for his 25 touches (of which 24 are listed as effective) which is outstanding. Gov at 75% but only touched it 8 times (2 marks all day)and SOS at 50% for his 12 touches. It was Govs worst game for us this year I reckon. When he is not marking (or rather intercept marking) and pin pointing passes out of defence, like Weitering he is next to useless for us.
I doubt they'll give up on Gov after one poor game, our defence was abysmal for a large part of the first half yesterday. I sat on level 2 behind the goals we were defending in that first qtr and they were all over the place. Losing their man, poor handovers, mis match after mismatch the Coll fwds were licking their chops at how poor we were at maintaining structure down back (which was a strength last year). Poor old Weiters is a shadow of his former self at the minute, I really felt for him yesterday. He just panics about what to do when the ball comes near him, I could see every one of those instances unfolding at the end I was sitting at.

Fair enough re Acres, although I think he’s a list clogger
From what I’ve seen, he makes poor decisions under pressure, his kicking is unreliable (at best) and he is as slow as treacle (running and getting his boot to the ball)
Freo said he wasn’t worth the money we paid - unfortunately they have a no returns or refund policy!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 11 2023 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Sydney
I think we’re now beyond plastering over the cracks and need something more radical to change our fortunes and more player team meetings or contrite public apologies wont change a thing.

Facts are that our defence and mids are way too slow and our free agents are a bust. McGovern, Martin & Williams have all been beyond disappointing for different reasons.

Ideas
- Mckay back, Weitering forward
- TDK into the ruck
- Kemp third tall forward
- Dow in and Walsh to the wing

SOS, MCGovern, Acres out

The 3 players above have been butchering the ball for weeks. In addition to lacking skills, SOS and Acres are just too slow, whilst McGovern has had enough time and has never prepared well enough - it’s time to move on.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 9 2023 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Western Bulldogs
Small forwards still a massive problem and lost us the game again. So many inside 50s and cant lock the ball in. Too young and not good enough. Owies an exception and did well.
Depending on two forwards out of six is bad business. Unfortunately other than Martin there is no one else to bring into the team.

Martin was getting beaten in the 2s by the U18s - put a line through him. He’s a joke

Honey has absolute lighting pace, just wish he'd BLOODY USE IT MORE. Dead set, I hope the penny drops, no one will catch bloke. At the minute, he lopes around almost looking disinterested and like he has just woken up from a sleep. FFS drink a litre of red cordial before the game son!
