Title: New dog
Post by: DJC on May 27, 2017, 09:00:53 pm
Some of you may know that we have left Box Hill for the open spaces of the Bellarine Peninsula.  We need a couple of dogs to share our property and here's the first; a 16 week old Staghound called Nix.

Nice DJ...not quite a German Shepherd though(i'm biased) ;) but a very fine furry companion to be ...everyone home needs a furry friend to make it a home.

What a cutie, congrats DJC :)

Dogs are so much better than people. My boy is cozying up to me on the bed as we speak, it's scary outside with the rain and such  ;)

I've always wondered why people decided to call bad people dogs.

Dogs are generally loyal, lovable companions who would happily sacrifice themselves for their owners.

Aaawwww, what a cutie, David. And, yep, a home aint a home without a furry critter or 3 keeping an eye on things.

We're now doing exactly the same thing, moving out of the city to a more relaxed country area, and the first thing I do when checking out any potential new home is to check out the fencing!

Good luck, mate. We're off to check out Ridgeback breeders in two weeks... love ridgys. And what does Mrs Baggers want as a companion to the ridgy? A Wolfhound  :o

I haven't been able to have a pooch for a couple of years because of my job and where I live , but that's changing in the next two weeks .

My old dog (who wasn't really mine but I looked after it for 3 years)  looks to be settled where she is so might wander down and get myself a rescue hound from the shelter or a greyhound.

Can't wait!!

Can't go past a Border Collie  :)
Had a Black and White one, awesome loyal dog.
Now have a Chocolate and White.
So easy to train and will do anything you want and great with the kids.
Good Luck DJC yours looks a beauty.

Good on you Cimm. My wife and I have been fostering greyhounds for the last 10 years for the Greyhound adoption program. They are an incredible breed. We adopted one last year after our Border Collie died. There also plenty of other breed specific rescue groups out there as well as the pound. Enjoy.

Nix is now almost 14 months old and she has developed into a wonderful companion and very useful worker on our property.

Here she is with my youngest grandson.

Nice Pics DJ and some happy hounds....Nothing like some cold slate on a hot day, our dogs used to love the downstairs slate at our old home...
We get bunnies were we live and our dog would love to grab a few but we have to hold her back as my wife would freak out with all the dead carcasses :)

I finally convinced Ms DJC that it's better to have two dogs and Casper has joined our family.  He is another rescue dog and is a Staghound like Nix.

Here is Casper on his way home from Warracknabeal:

Rescue dogs are the way to go EB and the work the foster carers put in is amazing.  I'd have four or five if I could!

I should point out that I have spent the last two days "dog proofing" 80m of stock fence after Nix and Casper decided to visit the two dogs who live at our neighbours' winery.  As Seasick Steve would say, "It's all good!"

DJ, Mrs Elwood wants a rescue dog next time, we like German Shepherds and have had three of them over the years but they dont get along with other doggies
so good unless you raise them as pups together. So when our present old lady goes to the rainbow bridge we will get a older rescue German Shepherd as they
tend to be a breed of dog people dump when they get older and start costing money..Nothing makes Mrs Elwood more upset than dumped dogs especially Sheps.....

Get on to the Pet Rescue site - https://www.petrescue.com.au/ - and start monitoring what dogs come up for adoption.

My nephew has two German Shepherds.  Hank, a beautiful black dog, was traumatised when attacked by a Husky at a dog park but he has very quickly bonded with a younger bitch.

Staghounds are very easy going ... unless you're a rabbit, possum or fox  :)

Two great looking and happy dogs DJC! My dog Solly (the Staffie) was a rescue dog and I have thoroughly enjoyed his company for many years. He is now 13 and so I must make the most of his friendship for what time he may have left. Fortunately he is still healthy and reasonably active.  I'm feeling a bit reluctant about getting another dog after he goes as I would worry about him/her finding a new home if I went and left him/her behind! My step-daughter also has a lovely Staffie so I might have to volunteer to look after her a bit more when the inevitable happens.

I have just booked snake avoidance training for Nix and Casper.

https://www.facebook.com/K9snakeavoidancevic/

It's not cheap but it is cheaper and less stressful than dealing with a snake bitten dog ... and you get to cuddle the snakes after training  :)

Our neighbours' dogs were bitten last summer.  They survived - perhaps they weren't envenomated - but they spent hours at the emergency vet.

It's certainly worth considering if your dogs spend time in snake habitat.

Junk Yard Dog or Brown Dog(As in harder to kill than a...) was a common reference for Fraser.

It was a media nickname only; none of his teammates, etc used it.  Brown Dog, on the other hand, seems to be occasionally assigned to folks with the surname Brown.

When I was a young bloke “brown dog” was used in reference to folk who weren’t particular about their sexual partners, ie, “He/she would bonk a brown dog with three legs.”

A term I heard used for shaggers of all sorts as in "randier than a brown dog"............inferring that a brown dog would shag anything that moved! I think the inference there on the "brown dog" is that they are associated in the outback with extreme circumstances. Amazing stories of survival, etc., etc..

But I'm sure in VFL / AFL circles it was more likely about being harder/tougher than nails.

What about someone like Snake Jones, as in madder than a cut snake?

So apart from maybe "harder to kill than a brown dog", which I guess implies a certain indestructibility, all the other "dog" connotations are fairly negative ?

I have no idea why dogs get such negative connotations.

That’s true Thry ... and I have just enjoyed watching the footy with my two hounds sharing the couch with me (they prefer wildlife documentaries to the footy).

The negative connotations generally relate to conditions imposed by people and/or medical conditions like mange or rabies.

Interestingly, our native Dingo is always referred to as a wild dog by those who have a vested interest in eradicating yet another native species.

Also the nickname of Geelong CEO Brian Cook - likewise don't have personal confirmation but understand it is for similar reasons.
