Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 8: Post Game Euphoria!: Carlton vs Port Adelaide
It's interesting that there has been a lot of discussion on our rebuild and the associated need to get a solid defence into place on which we could then build. This has started in a very promising way with Weitering and Plowman coming in and together with Sam Rowe currently identified as an important member. Jamo remember  has been really struggling

I'm a bit puzzled therefore that we now want to start unraveling and unsettling it by moving Sam elsewhere at the first sight of injuries. As Murph said today, we are currently more concerned with building for the future and playing to and perfecting our system? Surely a major disruption such as this to our defence to cover injuries elsewhere would run counter to that objective?

We need to try and cover our injuries first and foremost from whatever depth we have available in those areas not rob areas where we seem to have established something promising. Sam's exploits at his previous clubs I say are not that important to us atm as we really need him to continue in the role he is currently performing for us. The need we had for him to move on Sun was an emergency one-off rather than something we necessarily want to do on an on going basis.

Bolton is very strong on players being able to play more than one role and I suspect that using Rowe to cover for Casboult could be more than just an in-game move.  The fact that it worked so well will have Bolton thinking seriously about it for the next few weeks, particularly with Kreuzer and Casboult out.

While I would prefer to see Rowe in defence, he may find the North forwards a little too agile and could be better value as a key forward and back-up ruckman.  We certainly don't have players in the NBs demanding a game as a key forward, key defender and/or ruckman.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: What Has Turned Around Bryce Gibbs ??
Or is it that with so many players now playing to a more team-orientated structure that he couldn't rest on his laurels any more ??

Clearly the overall playing list has a purpose and steely resolve, as an elder statesmen, he would be looked to for onfield leadership and a cool head in a crisis.

It's more that the rest of the team can't rest on the laurels of Gibbs, Murphy, Cripps, Simpson, Docherty and Kreuzer.  There are no passengers, the gameplan suits Gibbs and he's doing what comes naturally.

Probably just a good injury free pre-season and a game plan that suits his style of play.

Add in the fact that he was injured and suspended last year and it explains the fact that 2015 was a poor year by Bryce Gibbs.

Bolton has been consistent in his praise of Gibbs since the pre-season and he made the point that the rest of the team will no longer be allowed to depend on Gibbs, Murphy and Kreuzer.  Perhaps it's the better effort that Bolton has extracted from the second and third tier players that has allowed Gibbs to get back to his best and then some.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 8: Pre Game Prognostications: Carlton vs Port Adelaide
I heard the same rumour from an unreliable  source so I didn't  believe it. Makes no sense for him to retire while Weitering is still out.

Yes, it sounds like bullcrape to me.  There's no sentiment in footy and Jamison wouldn't be gifted a game to get him to 150.  If he plays on Sunday it will be because he is in our best 22.

I have been critical of Jamison this season but I think he still has a lot to offer.

The reason that people "bag him out" is the dropped marks and the lack of agility, both traits that are needed at FB/CHB. I would love to know how many uncontested overhead marks Sam has dropped this season.

That being said he was excellent yesterday against a young athletic opponent. I think he gets the team defence we are going with much more than Jammo and that's why he is played ahead of him. Sam Rowe will never drop his head and sulk, will give 100% and at the moment he is our best big defender.

Start marking the overhead marks and Sam is a lock for another 2 years.

I still haven't seen the game - the Internet is very slow in Birdsville - but I thought I'd chip in with a comment about Rowe.  Last week Hodge was a guest commentator and he spoke about how strong Rowe is.  Hodge wouldn't say something like that unless Rowe's strength was out of the ordinary.

You're right about him holding his marks.  If he had more confidence in his marking I reckon he'd spoil less and Mark more.

He wont take us any further ;)...we need to sack Bolton and replace him with a coach who has finals experience, won preimierships and more importantly
has a daughter with a book to launch... :D

Watch it EB; you'll be banned ;)

I spent the day on the Birdsville Track and only got the scores through updates during Geelong's dismantling of Wet Toast.

By all accounts it was a great win but then I read negative crap about players that are ranked in our best by neutral observers????

Hopefully I'll be able to watch a replay tomorrow.

The Sports Desk / Re: Parramatta, the CheatsFC of the NRL
I haven't been following this all that closely as I have minimal interest in the NRL.  However, it seems to me that the penalties are pretty close to the mark, particularly with the de-registration of the officials involved.

Courts these days seem pretty reluctant to meddle with the way sporting competitions are run.  Perhaps the Parramatta officials are using Hird's lawyers ;)

Blah-Blah Bar / I'm out of here
I will be heading off tomorrow morning for a trip across the Simpson Desert via the Madigan Line.

We will be staying at Mungerannie on Saturday so I may catch part of the game - I'm assuming the hotel has Foxtel.  Radio coverage is average at best and the game is not on the ABC so I'll probably miss out on radio coverage.  That will probably be it until I get back home, just in time for the Geelong game.

I'll be relying on CSC to keep me informed - if I can get internet coverage - so don't hold back.

Go Blues!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 7 : Pre Game Thread - Blues v Pies
Yeah , well I get the impression Macca wouldn't tell us anything if it was up to him.

I almost don't care if they just put "soreness" or "management" for guys who don't get selected but there should be some acknowledgement that the guy isn't playing for a reason. If they don't want to tell us what it is or they don't know, I'm fine with that.

I reckon the injury updates are pretty comprehensive.

The timing is an issue as injuries may not detected/identified until Wednesday or Thursday.  That makes it after the fact and McKay is often explaining why players were unavailable rather than who is going to be unavailable.  However, McKay was on the front foot with both Weitering's injury and Curnow's glandular fever.

I don't think it's McKay's role to explain what's going on with the Northern Blues but it would be good if their website was a little more informative.

Josh Fraser's player appraisal:

Quote
26. Matthew Dick

Stats: 23 disposals, nine marks, six handball receives, one goal

From the coach: It was another solid game in defence, who was more composed with his decision making and skill execution against Collingwood. He put in a good shift and a four-quarter performance.

20. Andrejs Everitt

Stats: 27 disposals, six marks, seven inside-50s, four clearances

From the coach: ‘Dre’ worked really hard up and down the ground. He set the tone with high-speed running and he found plenty of the ball playing between the arcs and up forward.

31. Jayden Foster

Stats: 18 disposals, four marks, nine handball receives

From the coach: Jayden continues to improve in one-on-one contests, and he was another defender that found plenty of the ball and used it well. He continues to work areas of his game that need improvement.

56. Andrew Gallucci

Stats: 11 disposals, seven handball receives, one goal

From the coach: It wasn’t the four-quarter impact that we were hoping for, but it was a much-improved second half. He kicked two important goals in the last quarter and offered good presence at ground level.

18. Daniel Gorringe

Stats: 11 disposals, five marks, one goal

From the coach: His second half was quite impressive after a slow start: he played on a wing at times and made Jesse White accountable, and he certainly got better as the game went on.

48. Kristian Jaksch

Stats: 11 disposals, four marks, four inside-50s, one goal

From the coach: There was some inconsistency from ‘KJ’ in competing in the air, but he had some pivotal moments where he marked the ball forward of centre. He had a much-improved second half and got some exposure at both ends of the ground.

27. Michael Jamison

From the coach: ‘Jamo’ started really well, with some brutal efforts in the contest to spoil in the air: we certainly missed his presence when he went off with concussion midway through the first quarter.

80. Matthew Korcheck

Stats: Four disposals, three marks, 14 hitouts

From the coach: He continues to learn the game and get valuable experience, while he took a couple of marks and had a shot on goal. He’ll grow in confidence as the games go on.

65. Dillon Viojo-Rainbow

Stats: 18 disposals (12 contested), six handball receives, one goal

From the coach: It was another solid game from Dillon where he played in a variety of roles and used the ball well. He got back to support in defence and got some exposure in the clinches as an inside midfielder in the second half.

36. Cameron Wood

Stats: 18 disposals, six marks, four inside-50s, six clearances, 34 hitouts

From the coach: It was a really good game from ‘Woody’, who set the tone with aggressiveness around stoppages and worked hard on spread to create another option in offence.

If the coach knows his business, Jamison (subject to concussion), Everitt and Viojo-Rainbow would be most likely to get a call up.

Unless it's just the coach pumping tyres up (and I doubt that it is), it's good to see improvement in the performances of new blokes and players who didn't seem tp make progress last season.
