Robert Heatley Stand / Re: JLT 2018: Carlton vs St Kilda at Ikon on Wednesday
I think that young Harry's efforts tonight confirmed what his form in the NBs and in his two previous games suggested; he can play.  However, he needs to be able to string several games together to adjust to the tempo and pressure.  The last thing I would do is drop him and play Weitering forward.

Marchbank was outstanding tonight and Plowman wasn't far behind.  With Weitering, we have three defenders who can match up on a tall forward, play up the ground and provide run through the midfield.  There's no reason why we can't play all three, and Jones, in defence and up the ground.

Dow definitely looks the goods and O'Brien will be better for the experience.  Kennedy was quieter than I was expecting but his hardness at the contest was promising. Garlett flashed in and out but the tackle that ended his night was a highlight.

Kreuzer and Cripps both made good on their desire to be more effective in the forward 50 and both were in good form around the ground.  Casboult was very good as back up to Kreuzer and I think that he will be a major beneficiary if McKay and Charlie Curnow continue to improve.

Cuningham was good, as was Fisher, and it's good to see their development progressing.

Finally, anyone who thinks Ed Curnow won't be one of the first players picked for round 1 has rocks in their head  :)

I'm looking forward to my copy arriving; it may help to piece together some vague recollections of the late 60s and early 70s  :P

Mrs DJC and I visited a new (to me) food shop today.  Apart from the organic icy poles with chunks of real fruit, I was pleasantly surprised to see rabbit, kangaroo, emu, buffalo, quail and crocodile on sale.  The range of red and white meat to be devoured in our place has just increased significantly  :)

Hope Kruezer isnt seen as some forward messiah  and we are not patching holes again....eg Hampson.
Lobbe should be a backup ruckman only and spend most of his time in the VFL and Mckay has to play seniors IMO along with Casboult..

Yes, as I said in an earlier post, my take is that Kreuzer is intending to be more effective when he goes forward rather than spending more time forward.

Bolton made it clear, in one of his interviews earlier this year, that he wants the midfielders to kick more goals and I suspect that he includes Kreuzer in that.

I reckon Lobbe will only play if Kreuzer is out.

Looks like the Swiss have everyone covered again, tennis, firearms they lead the way...

https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/switzerland-stunningly-high-rate-gun-042600482.html

According to Planet America, the USA makes up 4% of the earth’s population yet 48% of the privately owned firearms on earth are in the USA.  I reckon that smashes the Swiss effort.  Firearm ownership in the USA is limited to a relatively small percentage of the population but gun owners often have many firearms.

And I have to comment on the claim by the POTUS that he would have charged into the school even if he was unarmed  :o Strong words from a bloke who had strings pulled to avoid the draft and Vietnam.  ::)

I think that’s why we need to look at the 3 talls.  None are superstars (yet) 2 are still learning the game. Giving 1 of them the chance to line up on the 3rd banana gives them a chance to take advantage. Hopefully the 3 have been working on leading patterns.

That is going to be crucial.  If Teague is up to the job, we should have more system in attack and our three talls will complement each other rather than competing.

Really makes you wonder why we drafted Lobbe doesn't it, on top of De Koning and McKay, if Lobbe is not being set for the 1st ruck in the short term then what is he good for?

If we assume Lobbe is not a KPP of sorts, and he is being set for the 1st ruck, then Kreuzer..............?

Is all this SpecialK to push forward for more goals just a smokescreen, because it seems we've tried it all before!

Anyway, it's just an interesting rumor that seems worthwhile discussing.

PS; Could we find that experiences in the backline will eventually make Jones a much better KPF? What we had hoped for Weitering, or could we be again looking at Weitering spending more time forward. I see either as a potential Harry Taylor type, capable of pinch hitting up forward.

Lobbe is primarily injury insurance.

I think what Kreuzer was implying is that he wants to have greater impact when he does go forward.  I can't see him spending any more or less time as a forward but I would like to see him become more effective when he rucks and/or rests in the forward line.

Kreuzer just had his best season doing 90% of the ruckwork and Jones had his best season.  I doubt whether either of their roles will change in 2018.

Really???

Are they going to buy them legitimately on the black-market, because it's not so easy to be a licensed shooter anymore?

Legitimately you have to have gun safes separating firing mechanisms and ammunition from the barrel. You also have to submit to regular inspections from the police, not that I've heard anyone getting inspected but once you have weapons on-site they are permitted to do so.

Illegitimately I've heard that the typical black-market price of a gun started beyond $50k, and you basically have to unambiguously identify yourself to very undesirable types who trade in such weapons! That's a very high price to pay, and I've also some of those recent home invasions are to get hold of weapons(legit or illegal) for use in crime! :o

So getting rid of guns might discourage some of those home invasions, and if they are robbers it would be cheaper just to get robbed!

Not quite right LP; ammunition must be stored separately but there is no requirement to render firearms inoperable.  Inspections are conducted regularly and there is no discretion if the security requirements aren't followed; the shooter's licence is cancelled and firearms confiscated on the spot.

As for people arming themselves, there's never been a safer time to live in Victoria and, as my defence tactics instructor was fond of saying, if you arm yourself, it's likely that the baddies will take your weapon and use it against you.

Ladies Lounge / Re: Blues v Doggies - R4
I heard one of the female commentators state that we desperately need a running coach to bridge the gap between our players’ ability to cover the ground and that of other teams.

I only listened to the game on the wireless so I can’t judge the veracity of the comment, but the scoreboard suggests that it is close to the mark.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Aussies aren't into meat!
One of our local butchers (15 minutes drive) has closed down because of family illness.  Our closest butcher is OK (5 minutes drive), particularly for sausages.  The best butcher is 20 minutes away but their meat is sublime.

I will buy free range chicken from the supermarket but my red meat comes from one of the local butchers.

We are also fortunate to have three outstanding seafood retailers within 20 minutes drive.  That has meant a slight decline in the amount of red meat consumed in the DJC household.

Interestingly, several of the local businesses are heavily into marketing US style BBQs and smokers, all of which rely on top quality meat (often red) and in cuts not offered by the supermarkets.

I watched some of the coverage on CNN today, powerful stuff. But what Americans don't question, don't prioritise, is to me the number one question that should be asked. Even if we accept the second amendment concept for the right to bear arms, and if we concede that they should have the right to defend themselves with a gun, and they have the right to go out hunting defenseless animals with a gun, even if we accept all that, why do they need to do that with a semi-automatic assault rifle that is designed for one purpose only, and that is military applications to kill as many humans as possible in the shortest possible amount of time

How can you fight back against an oppressive government if you don’t have weapons that are designed to kill people?  Of course, that’s assuming that a bunch of raggedy-arsed rednecks with assault rifles and the odd machine gun can take on and defeat the most powerful army, navy and air force going around  ::)

It really is freaked up thinking but I think that the youth movement that has sprung up after the most recent massacre has the potential to drive change.

It’s unfortunate that the present POTUS is such a dog whistling, corrupt, populist bag of wind.  I wonder how different he’d be if he failed to avoid the draft  :-\
