Yeah, too many people look at the moment then judge a player instead of the whole chain of play, many of our bad parts Thursday night were not as bad as some like to make out.

More of a concern for me is some of the long-standing repeat offenders. I'm sure in the past some posters have used our slow transition and game style as an excuse for some, but what is the excuse for last Thursday night?

On the flip side, the irony is not lost on me that Thursday's fast paced game saw Daisy as one of the four quarter contributors! Yet he still gets very little love! :o

Actually, I heard it was put into use to increase the kicking distances.

Physics would seem to argue against that LP.

I’m sure that there was a discussion back at the start of the season about the optimum size of the footy for AFLW.

Women’s basketball uses a smaller ball to facilitate better ball handling and I would be very surprised if AFLW is any different.  But what’s logic got to do with it?  :)

It's six on six down back now, not seven on six, defenders have to defend and will be tested with our new game plan and the possibility of more turnovers.
No room anymore for intercept marking players only, the honeymoon down back is over and we will see who can hold there own as a defender.

Yes, the luxury of having Doc as a loose man in defence is long gone.

However, it’s not really a six on six situation. Our defence, like most other clubs, relies on protecting areas and forcing inside 50s into low percentage parts of the ground.  It also relies on midfielders, rucks and forwards getting up the ground to defend territory.  That may result in an eight on eight or ten on ten defensive match up.

The AFL are minimising head injuries in the mens game too.

The AFL are simply scaling everything from the mens game to the shorter season of the womens game.

Normally its 3 strikes over a 22 game season.
Its 2 for the women over a 7 game season.

That magpie chick who kicking one of the hosking girls in the vagina got 2 (3?) weeks, in the mens game it would've been 4 or 5.

Its unfortunate for Katie, but its got nothing to do with what sex she is.

So the smaller footy used in AFLW is because the game is shorter and not because women have smaller hands?   ;D

The whole point of the appeal against the penalty is that it is more severe than would be applied to a male AFL player.  In other words, AFLW tribunal penalties are intended to reduce incidents that could result in concussions suffered by AFLW players because women are more susceptible to concussion and will suffer from the consequences.

But what is his defensive pressure like? Second and third efforts? That is what determines whether he'll succeed at afl level

Good point JB.

I don’t know whether Paddy will make it as an AFL footballer but he seems to have good football instincts.  Whether that translates to defensive pressure and second and third efforts will become clear over the next few months.

Paddy Kerr goes ok. He might end up in the team before McKay. Watched him last year. Reads it well, leads well, kicks well, good in a contested situation and seems smart. He could be in sooner rather than later and will make a good fist of AFL. At least IMO.

From what I’ve seen of Paddy, he’s a natural footballer who gets into the right positions and makes good decisions.

I really don’t get the criticism of Weitering and SOJ.   :-\

The former was made to look bad by our other defenders pushing up the ground and leaving him (and Jones) exposed.  Some of Weitering’s work on the last line of defence was outstanding.

SOJ had a hard night but worked his butt off as usual.  His fortunes rely more on the work of our midfield than his own efforts.  However, I’d like to see him spend more time in the midfield where his footy smarts can come to the fore.

I don't like them either. Like some place in industrial North England, where the whole town seems enveloped in grey soot.

I like them  :)

If we have to wear a clash jumper, there's really no reason why we have to stick with the traditional white shorts (and I believe the white shorts = away strip link was dropped long ago when clubs started wearing shorts that matched their jumper colour).  The chamois panels (first suggested by Fev) could make a game-winning difference and Nike are paying us to wear them!

It was disappointing to lose after such a good start but the result was almost inevitable.

I believe our score is the highest kicked against the Tigers at the G for quite a while.  That’s not a bad effort and, if we can maintain that effort and intensity, we’ll trouble most teams and upset more than a few favourites.

What I liked about the game was Bolton’s obvious displeasure at losing.  While he was still positive, I reckon he was seething and I’m sure that attitude is permeating the team.

I would leave the team as it is, apart from any compulsory changes.  Hopefully the nine day break will be good for Kennedy and Kreuzer.

One thing that struck me is that Samo is as hard as a cat’s head and he doesn’t mind inflicting a bit of pain on opponents.

From Science Daily 6 Sep 2017:

Quote
Scientists have known for more than a decade that female athletes sustain concussions at a higher rate than males when playing sports with similar rules, such as soccer, basketball and baseball/softball. Females also tend to report more symptoms -- and more severe ones -- and may also take longer to recover from brain injuries than their male counterparts.

There are many more peer reviewed articles exploring concussion in females but it is generally accepted that concussion rates are higher and the consequences are worse for women.  That’s one of the reasons the AFL is tougher on rough play in the AFLW.  They would be avoiding their duty of care if they applied more lenient penalties.

Peter Gordon has been extraordinarily strident in his claims of discrimination, and I suspect that he is the instigator of the complaint to HRC.  Perhaps he would be better off getting up to speed on female concussions.

OK, I have finished today’s tasks; cutting up a large fallen branch, splitting firewood, sanding a table top and fitting an e-locker switch guard to the 4WD.  I have had a scrub and I’m preparing for the game  :)

However, I have come up with an issue in my preparations and I’m seeking guidance.

Is it acceptable to put half a dozen cans of pale ale into a cooler so I don’t have to leave the couch?

 :P

Go Blues!

I enjoyed a catch up with Baggers, RiverRat and DJC at this game last year, Richmond thumped us, although Mackay even back then showed some good signs, along with a couple of unlisted boys, at least that's my memory of it!

I can't make it this year, I hope you enjoy the game Crash, It would be great to get a report on the boys afterwards!

That was a good afternoon, even if the result wasn’t what I would have liked.

It was good to catch up with Baggers, RiverRat and Amers and, from my vantage point, good to see how closely Bolts and SOS were considering what they were seeing.

I was pleased to see that ACOS was well above VFL level and Paddy Kerr was able to read the play and make good position.

The Sports Desk / Re: Smith's Crew in SA
ha, yeah on first glance that remark would seem inappropriate, even if it is close to the mark !

But, lets look into that one statement a little more.  In terms of participation & an untapped resource for Australian cricket, it is a statement that stacks up.  Indigenous kids are, almost without exception, heading to the 2 main football codes (AFL, Rugby League) & those two codes have benefited enormously from the pool of talent &  skills that they bring to both of those games.  Cricket is well & truly missing out.......as was the case for many years  in South Africa.  The local black population was always a huge un-tapped talent for cricket & I always thought that the Saffers had the potential to be the next fast bowling megapower (similar to the Windies) if even a little of that talent could be siphoned off from Soccer to Cricket in that Country.  We are are starting to see the results of that now ......even if their method (the quota system) is flawed & goes entirely against my grain.

It's probably even harder for cricket to capture the imagination of indigenous kids in this country, but its something they have to try to do if the game is to grow.  There have been & continue to be blokes with aboriginal heritage involved in cricket at the highest level (Gillespie, Darcy Short for starters), but no-where near enough.

Just my thoughts

cheers

Mal.

Many of the Aboriginal blokes I worked with were very keen cricketers but weren’t interested in anything above local club cricket.  I guess family and cultural issues may have played a part in that, as well as wanting to be ready for footy season.

It would be interesting to see how a Clontarf style cricket academy would go.  :-\
