Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL 2021 Rd 1: Carlton vs Southport
You would think Wooller might be brought in to play up forward and perhaps relieve in the ruck if Delaney stays down back.  I am surprised neither of Guccione or Gundry is included to give some much needed height -  if Gundry is fit to play he should certainly be in there.  Those changes would make the munchkinland forward line look a bit more balanced.

I thought Paddy was reasonable and put in on Sunday, even though he didn't get the ball much.  He could be (crosses fingers...) one of these 'slow burn' players who needs experience and consistent game time to elevate himself to the next level, but in the end becomes an absolute gem.  If we drop him every time he doesn't get 20 touches, it will be back to the start.  Given our midfield is a work in progress, I would prefer to see him have another 4-5 games at least - if he hasn't progressed by then, at least we will know.

Going back a ways, as a young kid, I can remember watching Bruce Doull play for his first three years and the general consensus among those sitting around me at the time was that he was a very average performer.  Then he moved from #4 to #11 (out of a sense of 'I'm not worthy') and the rest is history.  Maybe Paddy should cash in his #2 (which must weigh very heavily on his back) and find a non-descript number like #38.....

As akid I wrote to the club complaining that Goold's number had been given to someone who hadn't earned it ... I think he probably did eventually.  Years later I had some professional dealings with Ragsy - a true gentleman.

Hi ianh. Thanks for the report. I'd be keen to listen to the podcast, but that link returns a 404 error. I've tried three different browsers on my desktop, but no dice.

Thanks.

Another disappointing loss on the back of a period where he opposition got hold of us. Last week 7 or 8 minutes in 2nd quarter coughed up 4 goals to seal our fate. Last night the early part of the last quarter where we coughed up 3 goals to lose a 10 point lead without seeming to get forward of centre at all, then we dominate territory but couldn't get it on the board.

Skill execution and decision making poor and with Pound, Laloifi and (Brooke) Walker hopefully available for the next match there may be some changes in the offing for the next match. The question is who? Harrington stank in week one but was much better last night. Whilst it is a simplistic measure of performance it is notable that our player with the lowest average disposals is Darcy Vescio averaging 5 dispoals (total 10 disposals equal lowest with Laloifi off a single game) and I wonder whether the selectors might make a big call? Others with low disposal counts are Downie, but her strenghth lies in ruckwork rather than ball winning , Hammans (ave 5.5) and Guerin (ave 7.5). Conversely, Downie and Vescio are 1 and 2 in average disposal efficiency and Hammans 4th which might help their causes given disposal quality has been a big issue.

I really struggle to see who else might be in line to be dropped but with 4 quality potention ins there will some some nervous players awaiting the team announcement.

Lastly, my daughter, her partner and I have decided to do a podcast on the Blues AFLW team - anyone interested here is our first effort posted before last night's game. About the only thing I think it proves is my future does not lie in weather forecasting!

I'd like to see Edwards' efficiency. Cannot hit a target by hand or foot, and shouldn't be playing in defence because her turnovers hurt.
To the contrary her disposal efficiency at 62.5% puts her in our top 10 year to date.  However this just shows how stats can mislead, a lot of her poor disposals ie the 37.5% that are not "efficient" are really poor execution.  She is a conundrum, we need to good she brings but the bad really hurt us last night and it it that sort of disposal that is our biggest problem.

Ladies Lounge / Re: 2020 Draft
We also have Gibbs who at 186cm is a decent ruck size and played a bit in the ruck albeit more of a forward before coming to us.  The more cogent reason for not picking up a ruck (or key forward - we only have Gibbs and Harris if Vescio is counted as a flanker which is where she played best last season).  I think Maggie Caris is the only pure ruck drafted (at pick 17) and perhaps Amelia Velardo who plays more as an extra midfielder but does take the tapouts so I guess you class as a ruck.   We would have needed to use our first pick in order to secure either.  I could have handled using it on Caris but probably not Velardo.  No-one else drafted in the Victorian pool with pure ruck credentials and the only pure ruck overlooked amongst those touted a chance to be drafted was Charlie Vandenberg from Tassie but she was a bit of a long shot to be drafted.  Personally would not have looked at her even with our last pick.  Olivia Barber primarily a full forward (AAU18) can also run through the ruck and went at 21 so again would have taken our first pick.  Again might have been worth it.  Georgia Hammond at 44 to North is a forward-cum-ruck.  Not many other KF in the mix let alone with ruck potential.  Alyssa Bannan went before our first pick.
Personally I'd have grabbed Barber with our first pick, or Caris if we really wanted a ruck rather than a ley forward who can take a turn in the ruck.  They and Sarah Hartwig (defender) were the 3 on my board I rated above Hill when our first pick came and Hartwig and Hill were neck-a-neck and I probably would have gone the mid in Hill if it came down to a choice between them.
I think passing on Barber was a mistake but that in no way is a criticism of Hill, it is more a view that we probably needed a key forward or ruck or key forward who can ruck and they were only around at the top end of the draft rather than taking the mid.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Pre Game Prognostications: AFL 2020 Rd 18: Carlton vs Brisbane
Sorry, but cannot be relied upon. Sadly, hasn't any mental toughness or consistency or reliability. Too flashy and seems incapable of hunting his own aggott. I'd trade him, might be able to swap him.
Trade him for what?  Half a tube of linament?Fair deal I would say.  Great pity he has the tools but just not the desire or application.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Pre game Postulations Round 16 Carlton vs Sydney at Metricon.
Would like to see Owies given a taste. He is the only untried player I'd think was important to have a look at by the end of the season. Ramsay we could give a game to I suppose but he is still in his teens whereas Owies is, what, 24? I don't mean that as a criticism, I understand he went out of the system for a while, but it seems to me we need to make a call on him and a look at him in AFL company would help and indeed it would be unfair on him to cut him at the end of season without that look IMO.

The other untried players are Phillips and O'Dwyer who I don't think are near it and the injured Kemp.

Others I'd like to give more time to this year are O'Brien who needs to show something and Macreadie who I really rate if he can stay on the park. If Cripps needs a rest play Kennedy in the role and see if he has what it takes. I don't think we can go with both in the same side too often unless they switch the centre/third key forward roles between themselves but that means having to make choices about other key forwards. We have a plethora of key forwards ATM but that doesn't mean we should play them all at once, much less then go 2 ruckmen into the bargain.

The team looked tired last night. We are back on Tuesday night Rotation time perhaps? Reading the comments about the recent scratch matches suggests to me that there are a number of the younger players who they would want to keep working on at that level at the moment - Ramsay and Philp being 2. If you really wanted to do a refresh without going uber-inexperienced you could look at bringing in Lang - I don't think there is a future for him but as a stop-gap if we rest the experienced guys en masse I wouldn't object. Other than Murphy who I think is trying his guts out and not looking tired there is no shortage of senior guys and indeed not so senior guys (eg Willo) who could do with a rest. Even Murphy might struggle to come up again so quickly. Not that I expect them to do this, nor do I think mass rotations is the way to go but if they wanted to how about this team:

OUT: Cottrell Dow Polson (omitted) Simpson Williamson Cripps Casboult Betts Pittonet Murphy (managed)

IN: Plowman Macreadie Kennedy Cuningham Gibbons (experienced returning from break) Lang (in for experience) O'Brien (time to show something) TDK (still a couple of years off his best but AFL-ready) Honey (kid) Owies (debutant but not a kid)

Thats TEN changes - out with 4 fairly young/inexperienced players, 1 slightly more experienced , 1 struggling superstar and 3 veterans, in with 5 guys with decent experience, 2 with a bit of experience and 2 kids 1 on debut. Yes we lose top end experience but they are all as it seems to me struggling ATM and facing a second short turnaround.

Here is how I would have them line up:

SPS Weitering Plowman
Docherty Macreadie Newnes
Fisher Kennedy Walsh
Cuningham McKay Gibbons
Jones McGovern Owies
TDK Martin E Curnow
Honey Lang O'Brien Setterfield

Jones can give TDK a chop out in the ruck to save McKay doing the role. McKay to push up as the outlet for defenders, McGovern leading into the space behind him Jones staying close to goal to give a contest for the long bomb in if nothing else presents. Don't expect him to be a goal machine but to contest hit packs hard, create some chaos and not be outmarked too often. McKay and McGovern (especially the latter) to be expected to work hard and keep presenting. If defensive talls get exposed Jones or McGovern can be thrown back. Fisher back in the middle where he wants to be and a look at some of the younger players we need to find out about.

MC will no doubt keep some of the older guys, hope they work out which ones have the legs to go again Tuesday, that is more crucial than form at the moment.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Jim Park Analysis 2020
Notice the Roar website did its best "P" surname team this week and Jim Park was the only Carlton player to get a spot in the team (on the bench).  Val Perovic might be a bit unlucky but beyond that the cupboard is a little bare. Brad Pearce shone bright only briefly, Phil Pinnell was a soldier with a 200 game career (including Melbourne).  Any others to note?
