Charlie (auto in), Phillips (we need a genuine ruck even if a battling one), Setterfield  (did enough to warrant coming straight back in given no-one knocking down the door in the 2s) and (subject to being sufficiently match fit) Williamson (quality player) for mine.  If Willo not considered ready then try Stocker if he is fit enough - if not then Schumacher.  No to Garlett - has not done much in the 2s after being putrid in the 1s albeit played out of position, no to Lobbe unless Phillips doesn't come up for some reason.

Yes, she can walk - but into the draft where the Bulldogs would surely take her.  I don't think there is any ability to name your price in this instance.

I think Tilly is more of a loss then most reckon, but  I suppose time will tell.

Discussion with MLG at open training on Friday he told my daughter we had signed up the bulk of the squad, Davey was gone and he couldn't say (clarified that this meant he did not know) about Tilly specifically.  His words were "if you don't want to play at this club then we don't want you".

Interesting to note that the Northern Blues article on their team list says all the players named on the Carlton extended bench are nemed in the Northern squad.

BUT neither Charlie Curnow nor Kade Simpson are named in the Northern Squad.  I take from this that they are seniors or nothing - hopefully both are good to go, but I suppose the pessimist
might say it suggests both will be missing on the weekend.

Round 4 team in.  http://northernbluesfc.com.au/?p=7133

Interesting to note the article says that all named on the Carlton extended bench are named in the squad, but neither Charlie Curnow nor Kade Simpsons's names appear in the Northern squad - does this mean they are out of the Blues line-up and just named as a smokescreen, or does it mean they are both locks to be in the Carlton 22?  I suspect the latter.

I'll raise the awkward question, does Charlie come back in and if so, who makes way?

Polson was an absolute passenger again yesterday, even his teachers pet status surely can't save him.  O'Brien's stats read better but some of his efforts are comical and I think he needs to go back to VFL level once someone is ready to step up - but at the moment the VFL reports suggest no-one is pressing hard enough atm assuming Williamson needs at least one more run in the 2s.

Paddy Dow was better yesterday but still his kicking can be a worry.  He seems to me a better kick at goal that in field kicking - his depth rather than accuracy seems the issue - so maybe keep him close to goal as a pressure forward?  ATM he would be the next most at risk I would think, with Williamson and Cuningham (and maybe Lang if he can pull up his socks) in the wings to come back over the next few weeks.

As a kid I remember listening in to a conversation a group was having about whether Bourke-Barrot-Clay was the best centreline of all time.  Someone suggested it was at least certainly "the best centreline since the war" to which the oldtimer of the group responded "Yes, and the war before.  But I remember as a boy seeing Bruce-McGregor-Kennedy in the Blues triple premierships of 06-7-8 and they were better".

Doing the maths I would put this conversation at about 60 years later so it is quite possible the oldtimer was telling the truth about seeing them play, and on reputation quite possibly the truth about them being better!

If we want McKay to learn the role of a mobile KPF who occasionally rucks, running him around tagging Westhoff wouldn't be too bad of an option!

Which would also save us from having to take Jones out of defence which would be problematic unless we brought in a tall defender.  Options thin in that area unless we think Casboult can do the job in the ones, he hasn't shone in that role in the 2s.  Goddard just doesn't seem to be up to it and Ben S is a long way off.  Lobbe maybe in to share ruck/forward duties with Phillips and release McKay to run with Westhoff?  Does he have the tank?  Is it worth trying anyway for education (both player and match committee) purposes?

Casboult forward/second ruck seems the most likely unless Kreuzer comes up.

Whats an elite under age footballer look like vs an elite over age footballer?

I know we like positive signs of anything, but IMHO, 14-18 are the formative years of an athletes body, and thats where they really start learning the nuances of the game, how to play position, and refine their craft.

We will see, but if he plays even 50 games at AFL level he will be deemed a roaring success.

Given that players who cross from other countries eg the Irish and Americans are able to pick up the game with ZERO underage experience I cannot see how limited underage experience can be a death knell for Matt Owies.

[6]   Umpiring: the number of times our tackles were not rewarded really irritates me. Incorrect disposal, kicking in danger and in the back appear to be extinct. That cost us. I am rather tired of that, to be honest. We need to get the umps out to our club, complain or something. I’m tired of this crap.

The game started off like there was going to be a crackdown on HTB/incorrect disposal as there bloody well should be.  But by the last quarter it was back to letting players just drop the ball or not bother with trying to dispose of it and calling the ball up.

The only time I've seen JGM play forward until 2 weeks ago was last year against the U18's. JGM actually looked better as a forward than he has a defender. I was hoping that we would persevere with it, but it never happened. We had too many tall defenders out and needed him down back.
At this point I think it is too little too late: I think his papers are done. But, who knows? Stranger things have happened.

Whether we keep him or not, we MUST recruit a kid to be the next tall defender. I don't want to depend on Weitering when Rowe, Alex Silvagni and Jones go. I can't see Marchbank doing the job at this time. But that is another tale.

Understand where you are coming from, Rowe is the only gorilla-minder we have and he is at best nearing the end.  All the others are shorter and/or more suited to athletic types.  But with the way the modern game is evolving do we need the gorilla minder that often, or to put it another way is the gorilla as a species in danger of extinction?  To me they are already at near-extinction and the only thing that is likely to reverse that is the introduction of 666.  So will the number of the beast lead to an increase in the number of beasts down forward?  Quite possibly, and allied to that is the trend towards one ruckman with a back-up who contributes forward - although Clarkson's one-man campaign to save the 2 ruckman model may get some supporters if it troubles teams in the finals.

I think a club probably does need one gorilla-minder on the list for when the need arises even if there may be games where that player misses selection (or has to play a different role, eg up forward) due to the absence of a match-up.  And perhaps am apprentice to hopefully take over is not a bad use of list space -  the question is where to find them.  Sam Collins at Werribee is one name that keeps cropping up at 194/97 he has a bit of size about him, dominates 1-on-1 at VFL level and has improved his mobility since his time at Freo who had him bulked up too much.  Agility is no doubt his weakness along with disposal but I am pretty sure someone will give him a spot on at least a rookie list and I would mind if it was us.  Any other names come to mind?
