Our line-up: B: Lachie Young Sam Durdin Harry Lemmey HB: Billy Wilson Dom Akuei Michael Lewis C: Alex Cincotta Jaxon Binns Tom Phillips HF: Ned Cahill Bob Monahan Ashton Moir F: Liam McMahon Luke Nelson Alex Mirkov R: Hudson O'Keefe Heath Ramshaw Zavier Maher Int: L. Disappointed to see Jess Gedi out; he was good last week.
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos: [1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less. [2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps) [3] Three players at least must get a mention. [4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.
AFL Rd 6: Carlton vs GWS Rating: A An injury depleted team takes on an undefeated one and, but for a ten-minute period in the 2nd quarter, crushes them. We certainly picked up after last week’s failures.
Votes: I know we have 15 votes to play with, but there simply aren’t enough to reward everybody adequately. [3] Patrick Cripps [3] Sam Walsh [1.5] Marc Pittonet [1.5] Tom de Koning [1] George Hewett [1] Matthew Kennedy [1] Jordan Boyd [0.5] Brodie Kemp [0.5] Matthew Cottrell [0.5] Harry McKay [0.5] Ollie Hollands [0.5] Charlie Curnow [0.5] Nic Newman
Explanations: [3] Patrick Cripps: One of the great games: 39 possessions, 13 clearances, 7 tackles. Crippa did it all. [3] Sam Walsh: Almost as good as Cripps, which says something. 35 possessions, 6 clearances and 4 tackles. [1.5] Marc Pittonet: One of Marc’s best ever games. He not only dominated the taps, he got the ball around the ground. [1.5] Tom de Koning: 3 goals in itself would be a great return, but his ruckwork really shows how much he has improved. [1] George Hewett: Most other week, George’s numbers would be worthy of 3 votes. An excellent game! [1] Matthew Kennedy: Celebrated his 100th game in style, bot on the ball and in defence after injuries to Williams and Weitering. [1] Jordan Boyd: Played a lot of the game on Toby Greene and minimized his effectiveness. [0.5] Brodie Kemp: Superb job in defence. [0.5] Matthew Cottrell: Not huge possessions, but almost every time he got the ball we scored. [0.5] Harry McKay: Started slowly, but showed how dominant he can be in the air. [0.5] Ollie Hollands: Started slowly, but came into the game and did some really clutch things. [0.5] Charlie Curnow: 3 goals 4 points: should have been 7 goals. [0.5] Nic Newman: Another Nic Newman game. You know what you get each week with Nic.
Honourable Mentions: Elijah Hollands: Possession were down a bit, but 2 great goals and a solid performance. Lewis Young: Stepped up when it was needed. Very good. Jacob Weitering: Struggled with injury, but still did a job. Lachie Cowans: I wanted to give Cowan votes. He did an excellent job and showed a lot of poise and determination. Zac Williams: Apart from one bad mistake, Zac was pretty good until he was injured.
Binns, Cincotta and Sam Durdin named as emergencies for the seniors. One of those will probably not play VFL: probably Cincotta. Akuei and Billy Wilson available. Wilson is an immediate 'in'. Not so sure about Akuei. He has had a pretty ordinary start to the year.
[1] Disappointed that Tyson Sruk didn't play. he was named but ... If we're trying to hide him, then we've been so successful that I have no idea if he can play or not. Same can be said of Ferronato, but he is, at least, playing. 10 possessions, 4 clearances, 4 tackles. I wouldn't be selecting him from what I've seen.
[2] Zavier Maher played his best game in our colours. 34 possessions, 6 marks, 5 clearances, 2 tackles. Not sure if he can go all the way, but I am very happy to see him play like this. With so few AFL listed guys available, he stepped up and played as our #1 mid.
[3] Binns had a good second half. he was quiet early, but ended up with 27 possessions. 8 clearances and 3 tackles. Binns is doing more of a midfield job this year, not just running up and down the wing.
[4] Lemmey developing nicely as a key defender. he shows a lot more passion and desire in defence.
[5] Jess Gedi played his first game for us today. 16 possessions, but 8 tackles. Not bad for a debut.
[6] Alex Mirkov is very much a work in progress. In the centre square he dominated. Not so effective at ball ups around the ground, but he is coming from a long way back. It will be quite a while before he gets full strength back, not to mention the tank to run out a game. Hudson O'Keefe was also good in the ruck, but he needs another 10 kg of muscle on him.
Charlie has the athleticism to do much more but he doesn't chase hard after an opponent with the ball anywhere near as hard as he chases a loose ball that he thinks he can possess.
Indeed. It is Charlie's biggest weakness and one he needs to address. Fev was the same for a while, but once he got used to using his strength and pace, he got good frees from tackling and chasing.
