Robert Heatley Stand / Re: JLT 2018 - Carlton v Hawthorn (Sat 10th Feb)
Clarkson had the temerity on SEN today to say that "Carlton are in a different stage of their development and winning meant much more to them".

He's just repeating what Carlton (Cripps, I think) said after the game - that we're a young side and we needed a win to help develop a winning culture.

We're in the early stages of development - just like you seem to be.

Yeah I know he touched it 27 times. Never said he was our worst.

His impact was low IMO.

Fairly accurate assessment. Nothing new though - most of Gibbs' career has been too much as a low impact accumulator. The stats sheet has been his best friend, not to mention the fanboys coming up with ridiculous excuses for his shortcomings. Like, his game was affected because he spent too much time knocking Stevens over, when this happened only once and in the second half (of course, if anyone can come up with evidence that he spent the whole game doing this, I'm all ears). And his dinky little turnover kick - sideways to a contest that missed the target - was Byrne's fault, not Bryce's (he was, apparently, pushing the envelope).

Bolton, like the coaches before him, is using Gibbs to plug gaps.  It would be great to see him used as a forward/midfielder but it's not going to happen.

Gibbsy, the god of gaps? Haven't heard that daft furphy for a while. The idea that coaches sacrificed Gibbs' career as a gun onballer to play him as a loose man down back with a mandate to kick backwards as often as possible is just ridiculous. What gaps is he currently filling that are preventing him from being a crack goal-kicking midfielder?

Gibbs reputation - as some on here  see it - owes more to Bruce McAverney than his on-field exploits.

Ahhh my old pal Java......brings back memories of our heated debates over your man Britts. Hope you're well buddy. ;)

Can't remember feeling much heat on my side of the debate, mate. ;)  ;D I'm well - you and yours the same i hope?   Drop in every now and again but finding it hard to get excited after 12 Groundhog years - Elwood still banging his head up against the recruitment wall and Sheiky's as cracked as ever.  ;D

Next year could be a bit better.

MM's comment about no one doubting Watson more than Watson, well I can think of one bloke that doubts him more and that's Mick himself! We've been wasting time playing White who is never going to be more than back up at absolute best and this whole time we could have been developing Watson as a forward. Mick has most definitely instilled the hunger to win back in this side after he lost it but fk me he's made some terrible moves/decisions along the way.

Still making sense, Carrots. Mick coaches to mistakes a bit too often.

Results dont matter but Individual perfomance and improvement does....

So what's the prognosis 2014, Elwood?

If Henderson and Waite can play the Key forward positions for most of the year then we can make the eight and maybe win a final or two, if that doesnt happen then we will struggle to kick goals and will be relying on the likes of Essendon or some other steroid happy club to allow us finals entry by default again.
Casboult and Rowe dont cut it, also Henderson playing forward leaves a large gaping hole down back which Watson will have to fill and his improvement , form and fitness will also have a bearing on how we go.
Of course the Malthouse game plan is still in the embryo stage as far as learning goes and maybe he can fine tune that to make up some ground on the leading teams.
2014 is more about putting some more peices of the puzzle together but I dont expect to see the puzzle finished....

PS..Nice to see you posting Java and look forward to your offerings in 2014....

I'm always here in spirit, Elwood. As for posting, after 14 years I think I'm worn out and the puzzle you mention appears to be an on-going thing.
