Robert Heatley Stand / Jim Park Voting 2024 AFL Rd 12 Carlton vs Port Adelaide
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos:
[1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps)
[3] Three players at least must get a mention.
[4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.

AFL Rd 11:   Carlton vs Gold Coast
Rating:      A
We outplayed Gold Coast in so many areas, a really solid effort after last week’s disappointment. Unfortunately, they can kick goals from ten rows back in the stands and we can’t.
Last week it was a challenge to give votes: this week it is a challenge to reward everyone who was significant.

Votes:
[2.5]   Patrick Cripps
[2]   Tome de Koning
[2]   Sam Walsh
[1.5]   Blake Acres
[1]   Matthew Kennedy
[1]    Nic Newman
[1]   Alex Cincotta
[1]   Zac Williams
[0.5]   Mitch McGovern
[0.5]   George Hewett
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp
[0.5]   Harry McKay
[0.5]   Lachie Cowan
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow

Explanations:
[2.5]   Patrick Cripps:      What a game! 31 possessions and 13 clearances!
[2]   Tom de Koning:   Tom was probably beaten in the ruck, but around the ground he was dynamic. Tom played more to his strengths rather than his weaknesses, and it was obvious that he succeeded. 10 clearances and some nice marks.
[2]   Sam Walsh:      32 possessions, but his disposal was diabolical.
[1.5]   Blake Acres:      A solid 4-quarter effort.
[1]   Matthew Kennedy:   Love the way he attacked the ball.
[1]    Nic Newman:      Quiet early, but he really lifted and did some magic things.
[1]   Alex Cincotta:      Not a lot of possessions, but he totally negated Touk Miller. Miller got in 21 times, their best. But very few of his disposals were damaging. On the other hand, Cincotta did some wonderful stuff that simply wouldn’t appear on the stats sheet.
[1]   Zac Williams:      4 goals and an excellent game for a guy who has struggled of late. He kicked snap goals, roving the pack, which our other smalls don’t do. He even spent some time in the middle and was more than useful.
[0.5]   Mitch McGovern:   Started brilliantly and kept his opponent quiet, Mitch also took a couple of great marks. A fine performance.
[0.5]   George Hewett:   Unheralded, but very effective. 6 clearances.
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp:      One of his better games, Kem kept his opponent out of it and provided drive himself. He still has to work on his kicking, which was not as good as it could have been.
[0.5]   Harry McKay:      To dominate his position and get this few votes only goes to show how even our contribution was today. H’s marking was excellent.
[0.5]   Lachie Cowan:   Probably his best game, Cowan’s disposal was great, his willingness to take the game on was excellent and his cutting out his opponent was more than solid.
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow:   Normally, kicking four goals four (it should have ben at least 7 goals), would have been a brilliant effort, but Charlie’s first half was ordinary. It didn’t help the way we delivered the ball to him, but …

Honourable Mentions:
Jacob Weitering:      Most other week’s Jacob’s efforts would have been worth votes. He was brilliant early, but obviously a bit sore later. King kicked 3 and could have kicked 5, but didn’t win a single contest against Weitering.
Adam Saad:         Pretty quiet by his standards, but kept his opponent quiet and still provided drive. He’ll be better for the run.
Oliver Hollands:      Like Weitering, Ollie was brilliant early, but faded a bit. Still, he did a lot of good things and would have got 2 votes last week on this effort.
Elijah Hollands:      Came home with a wet sale and kicked a nice goal. Again, this effort would have got 2 votes last week.
Orazio Fantasia:      Played further up the ground and did a lot better than he has done. He might even keep his place.
Jordan Boyd:         A really solid effort in defence.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL Rd 9 2024 Carlton vs Gold Coast at Carlton
The Gold Coast had a midfield that that was mature and talented: it is better than North's and probably a few others. We had Binns, who has played less than a quarter of senior football. So, we were always under the pump.
To come back as we did, after such a disastrous start, was excellent and showed character. Giving up the last few goals ... well, that is the way it goes.
Gold Coast had the top 5 possession getters on the ground.

[1] Binns: you have to admire the way he works. A pity his disposal is so ordinary. He would have played a lot more if his disposal was reliable. Still, 26 possessions was a good day's work.

[2] Liam McMahon could be anything if he ever gets some body strength. He missed some of the easiest craps in history last week and still was dangerous. Today he managed 2 goals when our midfield was flogged. But he couldn't out-body me.
I'm not sure who we might pick in the MSD, but we could do worse than McMahon. I just don't see him challenging for a spot against Charlie and H when smaller men out-body him consistently.

[3] Wil White is a guy I like. He is a small forward from down Warnambool way and is pencil thin, but he isn't slow and he has a nice left foot and generally kicks some goals. Definitely one to look for.

[4] Jesse Motlop had 5 disposals for the game. Was he injured?

[5] Sam Durdin and Dom Akuei won't be with us next year. Both got towelled up today. Casboult kicked 3 while Day kicked 4. I'd like us to get a taller defender in the MSD, but will any still be available by the time we have our pick?

[6] Alex Mirkov probably won't be with us either next year. He does get taps, but he gets out-bodied too easily and doesn't have much game awareness. I would give him the benefit of the doubt coming back from heart surgery, but I don't know if we can afford to keep him on if he isn't going to be a senior player.
Mind you, our VFL midfield is very shallow. It doesn't doesn't matter where you tap it if the mids can't get it.

[7] Moir continues to disappoint. He has a few tricks, but he doesn't get where the ball is. It wouldn't hurt us to have him developing the 2's if we had a few more guys who were close to making it and a few less 'development' players. Monahan still doesn't get much of it, but he is more involved. he might even get a bit more of it if our mids got more of it.

[8] Billy Wilson is looking promising. 22 possessions in defence.

We were broken for the first time this year.

Votes:
[4]    Nic Newman
[2]   Marc Pittonet
[2]   Blake Acres
[2]    Matthew Kennedy
[1]   Elijah Hollands
[1]   Alex Cincotta
[1]   Patrick Cripps
[0.5]   George Hewett
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow
[0.5]   Harry McKay

Explanations:
It was a real chore to give votes this week. Not a lot of worthy contributors.
[4]    Nic Newman:      Our best player by some margin.
[2]   Marc Pittonet:      Beaten on the night, he still managed 11 clearances. That is Cripps-like!
[2]   Blake Acres:      A decent game and probably had the best of his opponent.
[2]    Matthew Kennedy:   An excellent negative job. He earned his money.
[1]   Elijah Hollands:   Not bad, but it could have been more.
[1]   Alex Cincotta:      Didn’t get a lot of possessions, but did a great stopping job.
[1]   Patrick Cripps:      Never gave in.
[0.5]   George Hewett:   Not bad at all, just not great. Didn’t have the pace.
[0.5]   Brodie Kemp:      Did a good job, especially after Weitering was hurt.
[0.5]   Charlie Curnow:   Kicked 2 goals and wasn’t poor, but not a game to remember.
[0.5]   Harry McKay:      Considering how the ball was (not) coming in, he and Charlie weren’t embarrassed.

Honourable Mentions:
Mitch McGovern:   Not bad, Did a job.
Sam Walsh:      Kept trying, but didn’t have a great night.
