The Sports Desk / Re: Corey "Homicide" Williams Passes Away
I am a basketball fan and its a sad day given he fought so hard to live and was at the NBL awards this year looking very frail and I feared the worst for him. Was a street baller in the USA and was on the outskirts of being an NBA player but didnt quite make it.
Was a league MVP for the now defunct Crocs but it was as a commentator he really excelled and he will be sadly missed by all basketball fans..

Vossy said that Kennedy probably did too good a job on Petracca!

It's interesting how the run with player's role normally changes when their opponent is shifted.  I suspect that Kennedy would have continued to get the job done if he had stayed with Petracca.  He has played as a defender recently and knows the structures and patterns.  We would have been a midfielder down, but Melbourne was and we have plenty others to rotate through the midfield.

Kennedy following Petracca down forward would have been worth a go, in the old days it was common for players to stay on the one opponent all day and follow them into different positions.

Petracca is a cat who chooses when to put in.
I thought Matt Kennedy did a good job on him in the middle for the first quarter and a half, it was only when he went forward he became a problem. Thought he tried at least unlike one Melb player in Fritsch, talk about lazy, if it wasnt delivered silver service style then he couldnt be bothered chasing or even competing and Goodwin dragged him several times and it was only in the last quarter I saw him making any effort after Petracca had done the hard work.
I thought we had players who were beaten on the night but at least tried, reckon Melb had a few who couldnt be bothered at all or sooked all night ie Gawn.

Yes, our natural geographic isolation was in effect a test case for the efficacy of lockdowns.

The next time they should really close boarders to travellers harder and sooner, but I fear the screaming lunatics will again influence politicians and disrupt efforts to save lives.

The hard evidence, the numbers, confirm isolation works to slow / delay transmission, there is no debate!

Ultimately, the severity and acceleration of the pandemic came down to global politics and local bureaucracy.

We should all be vigilant, Avian Flu is spreading, just this week there are reports of dead birds lining highways here in Melbourne around Werribee and Carrum Downs sewerage works. Not just one or two birds as is usual, but dozens and dozens over extended distances. Influenza as a starting point is many times more deadly than Coronavirus.
A new variant of CoVid called " Flirt" has also hit our shores....not sure what the symptoms are and if it has anything to do with the name?🤔

Not sure about Charlie in that role - I think Newman might have been the best available option after McGovern was toasted a couple of times.  If Cincotta hadn't been so much on top of Pickett, he might have been worth a try.
Petracca was on and I dont think anyone was going to stop him if he got enough supply and it was one on one stuff where he excels like Dusty did at his peak.
We needed to put more pressure on the delivery and get another player across to help out when we could..

Just on Ollie Hollands, caught a couple of times last night...he's only in his second season, still young , still very slight, and still probably adjusting to the speed of the game.
When he gets a bit more experience and a bit more bulk (he may never be super big, but he can add a bit of muscle and strength) he'll be a valuable long term player for us.
Reminded me of Paddy Dow playing U18s
football...thought he started well but Langdon got on top.
Probable matchup with Gulden next game...that could get ugly.

It would take courage, but wouldn't it be a 'statement' at this point of time.
It might, in a bizarre way, be exactly what the game needs to happen.
Agree...That would be something and could be a catalyst for change, finding that player brave enough would be the tough task.
Maybe a gay senior AFL Administrator might be able to entice a few players to come out together and make it less pressure than just one individual having to shoulder all the attention they would get.

.

Funny this...
Ian Roberts came out nearly 30 years ago in Rugby League.
Women AFL+Soccer players seem to have no trouble with it.
Colin Hughes the gay footballer on Ted Lasso declared himself...teammates seemed more concerned he didn't trust them with the info.

I guess the question is...
Is it anybody's business?
Do we really need to know?
Is it important that we know"
Would it be a positive for young gay footballers, or would the atmosphere in a teenage team be a little less tolerant than a professional organistation

Issac Humphries in the NBL who is a prominent player also came out and that news was received well by the majority who play and follow the game. Given Clarko, Finlayson and now Powell of Gold Coasts slurs i reckon it might be a while before we see a AFL player brave enough to come out...

I thought Ollie Hollands for the sub tonight. Cottrell might get the job on Langdon on one wing with Acres on the other.
Agree....Ollie is very loose and lets his man play off him too much, you cant do that vs Langdon or even the new kid Windsor who is a goalkicker. Id rather see a tight game like when we played Melbourne last time than a free for all up and down the ground high scoring game. Make every contest tough and frustrate Oliver, Gawn etc who dont like physical attention...Id be wanting Pittonet just to go at Gawn all the time and forget about tapouts etc and Id have Hewett shadowing Oliver everywhere he goes.
Petracca, Fritsch, May and Lever will have some impact and thats to be expected but as long as our key players like Cripps, Walsh, Charlie, Harry etc are doing the same I think we will win the game.
Blues by 11 points...

I don't really get the criticism of Lewis Young.  He might provide a few heart in mouth moments but I thought that he defended very well against Collingwood and did the job on Cox and Cameron when they went forward.

Only two of Young's eight marks were contested but he led the way for us with nine 1%ers and only Nic Newman had more intercepts.  On top of that, he only had one turnover for the game, not bad for a "panic merchant".

I imagine that Weitering will take Van Rooyen and we'll need another tall KPD to go with Petty and Gawn when he goes forward.

I wouldn't play Kemp on Fritsch.  Fritsch is too elusive and would exploit Kemp when he provides the extra at marking contests.
I reckon Weitering will have to take Petty given the latter is a lot bigger than Kemp or McGovern....a player who has given Melbourne a different look up forward is ex defender Turner who is 194cm. There might have been a case to keep Young in the team this week for the extra height. Petracca when resting forward will also need a minder and with Fritsch and Pickett also in attendance its going to be a busy night in defense if they get enough supply.
One of TDK or Pittonet might have to follow Gawn down forward if and when he plays there....
