Been plenty of talk about how many friday night games the men have got over the 22 games in 2018. How about the women? http://www.afl.com.au/womens/matches
They also kick of the season, this time against the pies (again) on a friday night. Back up in week 2 against GWS....on a friday night. Then a Saturday night.....before another friday night....and back to saturday night.
Our first 5 games are all night matches, our last 2 - day.
We have more friday night matches than any other team in the comp.
Carlton Friday night specialists in men and women?!
OK, so about time we had one of these. I know we have more than a few NFL fans on here....and i know there are quite a few packers fans....at least 1 bears fan and there are always a couple of cowboys and 49ers. So lets find out who everybody roots for.
Goal kicking award (Coleman equivalent - most goals) - Darcy Vescio Goal of the year award - Erin Phillips (Adelaide) Mark of the year award - Darcy Vescio
Someone has a gun to your head and says put your house on where you think Carlton will finish the home and away season. Not where you WANT them to finish. Not where you HOPE they finish. Where they will actually finish.
Note: Poll will run for 6 days (should finish after the Tigers game) and results should will be hidden until then. That way nobody can be influenced by our game, or other peoples votes.
OK, so one round to go and it seems there is an ever so slight hope that we can still make the finals.
Courtesy of the Dees beating the crows yesterday.
We currently sit 4th @ 3-3. Crows+Dees are 2nd+3rd @4-2
We need to beat the lions and we need the crows to lose against colingwood we need the dees to lose against freo.
Then it will be a 3-way tie on 4-3, which will come down to %.
We are already ahead of Dees, so we just need to focus on the crows. We basically need a 10 goal difference between us to make up the %. They lose by 1 point, we win by 10 goals they lose by 5 goals, we win by 5 goals. They lose by 10 goals, we win by a point. etc
So...if Adelaide win, they are in. If Adelaide lose, and melbourne win, melbourne are in. If Adelaide lose and melbourne lose and carlton win....and (Adelaides losing margin + Carltons winning margin) > 10 goals, Carlton are in.
Clear as mud?
IF we do get through, we would be forced to go back to back games against the team we just beat to make the finals, Brisbane Lions, except the final would be at their ground (i believe).
In any event, lets just win and finish with a winning record for the year.
The club to watch: Carlton Who will become a household name by the end of the AFLW competition? Chelsea Randall (Adelaide) A headline I'd like to see: "The AFLW with an 18-team competition within a minimal number of years" Who will be a surprise packet? Erin Phillips (Adelaide) One word to describe AFLW: Fresh In 20 years, AFLW will be… a fully-fledged competition that will be considered normal practice
Interesting to note that only 3 girls chose their own team as a team to watch. Need more media training?? Everyone else chose the doggies...including the doggies captain Katie Brennan.
It's anticipated that Carlton will select Visy female footy ambassador Lauren Arnell, Collingwood will sign its female football operations manager Meg Hutchins, and the Western Bulldogs will lock in their current women's captain Stephanie Chiocci.
We have a couple of people on this site who might be able to confirm or deny this info.....
R5 - Freo We don't really kick better, but the opposition kick worse. End result = win F: 9.14.68 (39%) C: 10.12.72 (45%)
R6 - Bombers For the first time all year, the team who converted the best actually lost. E: 8.9.57 (47%) C: 10.12.72 (45%)
R7 - Pies Same scoring shots, yet we converted better and got the win. Co: 12.12.84 (50%) Ca: 15.9.99 (62%)
R8 - Power We actually had less scoring shots, but converted better and got another win PA: 13.13.91 (50%) C: 14.9.93 (61%)
R9 - Kangas Poor kicking against good kicking and soundly beaten. NM: 17.11.113 (61%) C: 6.10.46 (37%)
R10 - Cats Less scoring shots, better conversion yields another win. Noticing a trend here?? G: 12.13.85 (48%) C: 16.8.104 (67%)
R11 - Lions Very good conversion rate, very good win. B: 9.10.64 (47%) C: 16.6.102 (73%)
So in 10 out of 11 matches this season: 1: If we convert better than the opposition do, we win. 2: If we convert worse than the opposition do, we lose.
In the other match (bombers) the conversion rate was almost identical (45-47%) and became essentially a 50-50 match, which we thankfully won.
Obviously there is more to it than a simple conversion rate, otherwise if your first score of the game was a goal, you wouldn't try and score again to ruin your perfect record. However, it clearly shows that converted well and restricting your opponents conversion rate has a very big say in the result of the game.
If everytime you go forward you kick a goal, it breeds confidence in your team and at the same time hurts the oppositions confidence levels. If everytime you go forward you kick a behind, it breeds doubt in your own team. When the opposition ultimately score a goal, it deflates your confidence more than normal.
Confidence and belief is key at this level and it shows in the results. Converting on the scoreboard grows both.
I think the club has lost its identity over the past 15 years. We can look far and wide to find our identity, but perhaps the answer is closer than we think. So close in fact, that each and every player, coach and supporter is wearing the answer more often than not - Our clubs motto.
Mens sana in corpore sano Usually translated to - 'A sound mind in a sound body'
It is from a series of poems that were written about 1900 years ago. Our motto is from the 10th poem.
Now i'm not one to go off reading poems but in this instance, I recommend this be force fed to our players, coaches, staff and board. It is very enlightening given our current circumstance. The English translation is below. Satire X: Wrong Desire is the Source of Suffering It is to be prayed that the mind be sound in a sound body. Ask for a brave soul that lacks the fear of death, which places the length of life last among nature’s blessings, which is able to bear whatever kind of sufferings, does not know anger, lusts for nothing and believes the hardships and savage labors of Hercules better than the satisfactions, feasts, and feather bed of an Eastern king. I will reveal what you are able to give yourself; For certain, the one footpath of a tranquil life lies through virtue.
People can work through that themselves, but to me that title is very apt and the take home point for me is as follows.
People who want for the wrong things are destined to suffer. Whereas people who work hard and give all of themselves will be rewarded.
Is it too much to ask for that we live up to our own motto?
