Robert Heatley Stand / What does our club stand for?
What does our club stand for?

A simple question with a far from simple answer.

I think the club has lost its identity over the past 15 years. We can look far and wide to find our identity, but perhaps the answer is closer than we think.
So close in fact, that each and every player, coach and supporter is wearing the answer more often than not - Our clubs motto.

Mens sana in corpore sano
Usually translated to - 'A sound mind in a sound body'

I did a quick bit of research and came across its original use. Click here for more info

It is from a series of poems that were written about 1900 years ago. Our motto is from the 10th poem.

Now i'm not one to go off reading poems but in this instance, I recommend this be force fed to our players, coaches, staff and board. It is very enlightening given our current circumstance. The English translation is below.

Satire X: Wrong Desire is the Source of Suffering
It is to be prayed that the mind be sound in a sound body.
Ask for a brave soul that lacks the fear of death,
which places the length of life last among nature’s blessings,
which is able to bear whatever kind of sufferings,
does not know anger, lusts for nothing and believes
the hardships and savage labors of Hercules better than
the satisfactions, feasts, and feather bed of an Eastern king.
    I will reveal what you are able to give yourself;
For certain, the one footpath of a tranquil life lies through virtue.

People can work through that themselves, but to me that title is very apt and the take home point for me is as follows.

People who want for the wrong things are destined to suffer.
Whereas people who work hard and give all of themselves will be rewarded.

Is it too much to ask for that we live up to our own motto?

Robert Heatley Stand / Pick your best 22 players - Part 8 (Season over - wooden spooners)
So there are quite a few Best 22 teams or R1 team type threads and everyone has there go and thats all well and good. However its very hard to get an accurate picture from the fanbase as a whole of which players are in those teams and which players are not.

If people use this poll and pick their best 22 players, it will give instant feedback into what this site thinks and who is worthy and who is not.

Post your sides if you want, but its more about the votes.

Please use ALL 22 votes from the selections above.

Robert Heatley Stand / Mitch Robinson --> Adrian Hickmott mark II!
So i've long been a critic of Robbo and his inability to find a teammate with the ball. Despite his best Miley Cyrus impersonations, a lot of his hard work is for nothing and can be counter productive.

I've recently noticed that he could be a very important player for us if we made a move.
Play him as a marking Half forward, ala Adrian Hickmott.

For those who cannot recall, Hickmott, was a medium sized player with a large sized heart and scrotum.
He was a team player that never died wondering and did the 1%ers.
He was a terrific mark for his size.
He was a decent shot at goal.
He loved a scuffle.
He was a very important player for the Blues despite him not being blessed with the skills/speed/endurance of the modern day footballer.
He was also a ranger with short hair.

Now mitch has been predominantly used as a midfielder who drifts forward, or can sometimes be played as a defensive forward.
I reckon we should use him as a more permanent forward. He will provide us with the defensive pressure we require up forward. He will no longer hurt us with his rainmakers. He will impact the scoreboard.

What do you reckon?
