Title: Chopper Read passes away
Post by: Gozza on October 10, 2013, 12:40:52 am
Saw on the news before.

Had liver cancer.

A Collingwood man too apparently.

Be interesting to see whether or not the 'Pies old timers go to the funeral...Shaw, Rene Kink etc.

Opinions?

Lived a hell of a life, but managed to turn himself around. I enjoyed reading his yarns. I must admit, I'm wondering (with a smile) whether he's followed through with his recent statement that he would be requesting an apology from god upon his arrival at the pearly gates.

RIP Chop Chop.  Wonder if Neville "Farkin" Bartos will be at funeral?

Gozza, could you post the actual name of the documentary so I can search it at later date. Also if you want to get an idea of the environment in which he was exposed to in H division, watch a film called every night every night ( there's a full length version on youtube). Based on a true story involving Christopher Flannery.   Documents the mind games and violent abuse by prison staff on inmates. One of the reasons why Chopper ruled H division in the infamous over coat wars in Pentridge, was because prison staff purposely assisted him as a  means of controlling and breaking the old firm established hardcore inmates. Freaky stuff.

Pretty sure it was just called chopper read. It was all told by him with a bloke interviewing.

I've also heard other things about chopper that he wasn't the hard c*** he made himself out to be....why he cut his ears off, why he ended up with his illness etc.

Whilst he displayed some sociopathic tendencies, I don't think he was a sociopath. Either by  logic  or human feeling, his focus on ruthlessness was apparently confined to those that were ruthless and preyed on the weaker inmates The reason officers assisted him was because he had an innate tendency to protect the weaker prisoners against the established hardcore psychopaths.

Surprisingly there's a multitude of online posts made by prison guards who looked after him, all of which speak of him as hard but fair.

One of the things he said in the documentary was that he didn't prey on the average citizen, but criminals were fair game. He detailed how he belted up a paedophile in prison for example.

What I have heard from some people was that the reason he cut his ears off was so he could stop copping it in the showers and go to hospital. The same reason he ended up with liver cancer as a result from getting HIV. How true that is I'm not sure. Only the conflicting thibgs ive heard. Though those telling me seem well informed about it all.

Self told biographies are not the most reliable.

Apparently Nine is to screen Chopper Read’s final interview tomorrow night, it includes an admission to 4 murders. Ch nine is being grilled for not reporting the admission to police, their response is that they were checking veracity of his information but that he passed away earlier than expected, before check was completed. They have since passed info onto police. Fortunately for chopper he's now beyond the reach of police and prison authorities.

Been reported that it was Hep C that led to his demise. I always assumed it was the prison Tatts.

I'd say it was from copping it in the #####

There are a lot of things unclear about what actually happened...I don't take his word 100% on too much of it. It will be interesting now that he's passed away of how many people come out and refute his claims.

Also will be watching the interview tonight on 60 Mins.

The sad thing about Chopper is that he was born into this world with the rights that any human has. Sexual assault and a dysfunctional family model corrupted him to the extent that even when at deaths door he still has no apparent remorse or understanding of his own condition.

Typical of people who have had a hard start in life. They don't bitch and cry about the direction their life took. How they were treated, or why things eventuated the way they did. However they see everyone as being in the same boat, and the fact that all should suck up some concrete and harden up. Life being life, sick being sick, and death just being the end to a beginning. They feel sorry for very few, and no sorrow for how their life started or ended. Its sad that many never get the start most people do, and how they deal with it makes it very strange for most of us to understand. IMO its best to not feel pitty for any and just be glad we had different influences in our lives, and different directions to avoid a life of crime. Life shouldn't be so complicated, but unfortunately it is. I don't know how I ever felt about Chopper. I always struggled to understand his view on anything and in return found his interviews showed a lack of love, or connected emotion most people experience. I couldn't wish this life experience on any. Kids are born with honesty and innocence and then things can just go wrong in many ways.

The suck it up Princess way of thinking is not the answer to life if you think about it. Again like many times before, I will say it one more time. "There is not enough love in the world". The one thing that makes us humans. Animals act on instinct. Only humans act on love and passion. Once this is gone, we are no better than the animal kingdom. Making life survival and nothing more. :(

Green Stick. Mate. Wow. Impressive. (hope KRUDS doesn't see that you mentioned the word 'love' in your post... supposed to be about CFC stuff, not... as he told the GozzMan, personal stuff.)

Your post I read over and over. You dared acknowledge and express your heart felt thoughts (feelings) on the plight of a deeply damaged, hurt and troubled human being. Tells me you see the bigger picture... the humanity picture. Hope we can meet-up some day.

Good interview with Chopper tonight on 60 Minutes.

Ch 9 seemed to promo his 60 Minutes appearance with 'revelations' etc. In the doco on Chopper a few years back he had already explained how 3 of the 4 met their demise. The 2002 'hit' was the only 'revelation'.

Still confused that he hadn't lost much weight... as I mentioned in a previous post, 2 relatives have died of liver failure and both were skeletons at the end. Perhaps there's a medico who understands this.

Saw a few people come out on TV this morning and say basically Chopper was a bullsh1t artist and anything he said over the years, perhaps even last night was a crock of sh1t. At one point he claimed to have killed 12 people, then 10, and last night four....a few weeks ago in the paper he said he'd thought long and hard about dying, last night he said he hadn't, etc. The lies just kept coming.

I also don't get all the glorification of this man either. Granted he had a sh1thouse upbringing, but so have a lot of people. He has (apparently) killed and that is in itself disgusting and evil behaviour.

Liver failure would have killed him rather than the cancer.  He had a large tumor as well which might have made him look bigger.

He was heavily jaundiced in that promo.

My father looked the same the last couple of weeks before he passed away and we were not aware his liver wasnt functioning until it started knocking him around. He went from full of life to death bed in three days.

To easy to sit in judgment from a position of detached and dissimilar circumstances. There are always alternative choices some with moralistically better outcomes and and some worse. Perhaps in the end the real measure of maturity and humanity is whether one is able to accept his/her mistakes and contribute in a positive way regardless. But even that is subjective and limited by each individuals input and opportunity. RIP Chopper

Tall tales were all he had left Gozza, having said all that I wasn't buying.

Your point about glorification is exact - I was thinking this the other day when I saw the advertisement for the Chopper interview (60 Minutes). I think part of it is that Australia is basically pretty quite and nothing much happens here - just look at what makes the papers. The media are now news producers rather than reporters which I think has been this way for sometime.

Trust me when I say this, Chopper Read is like a lot of other 'self professed big time crooks', in that he drinks his own bath water on most occasions.  The man is a liar and a fool.  He made money off his so called fame, and most of it, like the Underbelly crap, is only 50-60% of the truth.  Dont get caught up in anything this man says or does.  The world is a better place without him.

Sure is a curious thing how so many members of the public are secretly impressed with gangsters.

I think people 'liked' Chopper because he said he would only hurt criminals and not everyday folks :o And he seemed to be a funny character.  :( Probably says something about the empty and unfulfilled lives of many folks in the community.

Personally I think his declared mental illness was a little worse than he admitted. Sad, pathetic and dangerous. Nothing to be admired.

I like the writers description of "braking good". If that was indeed his life's journey, then it's worth telling.
