Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2017 Rd 2 Pre Game Panic Carlton vs Melbourne
Tidy up the disposal efficiency (see less turnovers) and we'll be more competitive.

It's a simple game that our players frequently make more difficult.

I saw an incident on the wing where Armfield had the chance to go after a loose ball and instead of hunting the footy he played for a free kick as he was being impeded.

Cut that crap out and go get the footy, and we'll do better.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2017 Rd 1 Post Game Analysis: Carlton vs Richmond
My biggest concern for the night was Cripps.

He was playing like a millionaire at times tonight and when he got hurt with Martin it's because he was undisciplined and attempted to hit Dusty like it would have made a difference and frankly went in limply.

End result he hurt himself.   Looked like a shoulder.

I was 12 years old when I was told that you get hurt when you pull out and don't go hard enough and that's what that looked like and Martin didn't hit cripps,  Cripps hit Martin.  Martin just stood up and took it and motored right through.

People here expect too much.  Martin has always been a powerful player with questions on his workrate and conditioning, but he's turned the corner and will realise his potential this season.

Can't agree with playing the kids.   We'll get thumped every week and become the new Melbourne.  Better for the kids to show promise and our senior blokes to stink whilst they learn.

^^

Different department.

Have a think about our marketing over the years.  Since 2009 or perhaps even when Judd came aboard, I have seen them do really good things.

Our membership department has been the opposite.

Marketing has been fairly consistent IMHO.

Such a good initiative. Gives the rank and file a good view as to induction into the club.

Has anyone else seen the video on membership with Dave Hughes, Pang et al? So good! Whoever is in charge of marketing at the club now is doing a great job!

Id suggest that this angle of the club has been performing well for years.

The problem being is that often over delivered where our team fell over and people struggled to make the expectation match reality.

Once again big tick.

With Bolton, I don't have any qualms about the personality type.  He is the sort of person you would love to work for as he seems hard but fair, supportive but even measured in terms of looking at inputs vs outputs.  Will praise the good stuff, and be constructive on the poor stuff, always linking it back to the values of the organisation.

We have a great manager of people.

What we don't know about is his ability to be an AFL senior coach.  Tactically, I think it's hard to mark someone with a younger group of players, as they are still in the process of implementation of system.  There will always be teething problems, particulary when compared to mature systems (i.e. Hawthorn, West Coast, Bulldogs et al) and there are always going to be the type of players that are incompatible with said systems that lurk around footy clubs which means that in can take time to get to a point where these players are no longer in the best lineup due to their ability to perform in that system vs their peers.  The perfect example of this is Levi.  He is easily a walk up start with us, but we need someone more competant in the ground level forward pressure, and finishing of work in that role.  Until we identify one, he weakens the system.

At the end of the day, I hope that we stick with Bolton, as we have a truly competant human being here, who even if he is short tactically of being a great AFL coach has all the attributes that should see him get there by the time his career is over (unless the Carlton Football Club culture has something else to say about it).

Under no circumstances, should we think that sacking Bolton is a good idea based upon what I have seen of him as a person, and his particular skill set and methodology.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Players aint that smart are they?
These guys are apparently going to have the AFL's strongest midfield, yet Greenwood and De Goey wont fire a shot till after round 5.  Add Wells looking doubtful in his preparation and you are left with Taylor Adams, Steele Sidebottom, Pendlebury and Will Hoskin-Elliott leading the charge.

Solid stuff there but only Pendlebury is spectacular and very thin with the aforementioned out of action.

These guys are my red hot tip for the spoon this year.  Will leak goals, have problems scoring and get smashed in the middle most weeks.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Where do you think Carlton will finish in 2017?
We wont sack him (yet)...but I bet we wont love him as much if that's where we finish.

Our club MUST go through this process where this occurs, and questions are asked of the coach.

Its bound to happen where we stick to our process in spite of everyone telling us how poorly he is doing and that he is sacked, and only then will I have confidence in our club that we know what we are doing.

Its about time this happens where we know what we are doing despite what everyone has to say about it.

Until it occurs (and Im hoping it will be this year when we are not expecting much) expect not a lot.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2017 Rnd 1: Carlton vs Richmond - Pre-Game
It will be interesting to see what effect Nthmond list changes have, ours are a little more less predictable.

Is the loss of Vickery and the injury to Hampson while retaining the aging Maric a negative, or is that covered by the recruitment of Nankervis. It's a pity our ruck division will enter this game undermanned, we might have held an advantage but I suspect it'll be 50/50.

Prestia is a good pickup as is Caddy, but over the last few years I think they come out square given the retirements, trades and the Yarran situation.

It may be a lot closer than supporters think, I can't split them, I know a few Nthmond fans who are less than confident. They think all the media hype is a bit too bullish off the back of the obvious Dimma boosters.

I spotted Kreuzer at the local woolworths twice in the last month.  He had a trolley full of fruit and vegetables on both occasions, and was walking around with shorts a t-shirt, and thongs on.  He looked like he had been working fairly hard by the callouses on his feet over this pre season which combined with his Freo game form(in which I thought he had a particularly good match against Sandilands considering hes unlikely to beat him) speaks for where he is at and that is in rip snorting condition.

I think he will do really well this season, and as much as we consider him a "lone hand" he has adequate support from Rowe, and Casboult.  We might still have the upper hand in this ruck contest after all provided he stays relatively fit and injury free (no one is ever 100%).

The major positives from my perspective is that he had no obvious bracing on which means not only is he getting through matches fairly unscathed the recovery he is doing is allowing him to move around freely.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Where do you think Carlton will finish in 2017?
Silvagni has already warned fans the Blues may face a “rocky road” this season and is no guarantee to notch as many victories as last year.

I agree with SOS but when you are hunting for members early on in the season I wouldnt have been so direct and sold a bit more hope....media like Matthew Lloyd are already all over the list, predicting failure and laying blame at the feet of SOS for his GWS recruiting theme .
Its like we have given it away for the year and are just waiting for the trade and draft period again....I'm a realist and accept our position but I think we have to sell the rebuild better and not allow numpties like Lloyd a free hit....

The thing is, the club is not wrong to be eyeing the next trade period already and to a degree, putting the thing away until that happens.  They have done what they can for this season, and now its time to see the results of previous years work.

Its a cultural and mentality shift, that our footy club requires to get everyone pulling in the right direction.

i.e.  What happens on the field is simply a measure of how the players and football department perform over this season.  The work they put in, will translate to their position on the ladder, and finals football (if any) is a reward for the efforts put in across the season.

Once the season is done, its done.

I don't see why we will change strategy overly from what we have been doing which means that no one's future is set in stone, but we are already looking at where we need to add youth, and where we need to recruit some mature agers to gap fill holes in our team.  All that changes is which names go at the end of the season.

Do you actually KNOW what you are meant to do or do you just think you know what you're doing?

Perhaps your perception is that you know what you're doing when in reality others know and you don't. Your perception is your reality, meanwhile everyone else has a differing perception.

Yes and no.

Sometimes its unclear but so long as I am following instruction its fine.

Either way, parallel my experience at work with Jaksch when I state the following.

I know, what I do at work.

My boss knows what I do at work.

That is the only part of that equation that matters irrespective of everyone else's perception.

Its why players continue getting picked when fans cannot figure out why (I can think of various examples of this across the journey) and it's why when people look like they are performing well, they get dropped.

Think about those things for a bit, and have a think about why a team that is having a hard time finishing the work in the forward line isn't selecting a bloke that has scored more goals this year for the Northern Blues, than our senior team did in round 2 of the JLT series.

I think everyone's perception of what is going there is irrelevant, and Ill defer to the coach.  Or are we going to think that Bolton has no idea how to get the most of his players??

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: JLT game 3
Thry, DJC and cookie, I would agree. The problem is that perception sometimes becomes 3/5 of reality, so anyone who knows they're not getting games in the seniors, and sees their social media status, would be tempted to put 2 and 2 together, and draw unfavorable conclusions. Perhaps they could post photos tweets etc. of themselves busting their guts at training, or something similar. If they're not working hard, at least look like they are.

Im with you when you say this.  I battle perceptions frequently at work with regards to what people think we do, vs what we actually do.

The root of that is as follows:

The perception is eventually irrelevant provided the right people know what is going on.

These guys can do whatever they like in the social media scene.  In reality, the AFL is very tight knit, and they all know who is doing what when.

That means our club knows who is doing what too.  Including the most important, the coaching staff.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: JLT game 3
I think that's a fairer assessment G2C.

There may be many reasons why Graham and Jaksch can't cement a spot in the 22.  Their social media activity may provide a clue ... or it may be completely irrelevant  :-\

+1

IMHO Social Media is the portrayel of a lifestyle, and not likely to be an accurate picture of how people live their lives.

Its arguable that some people who have a public profile, might not even do their own social media.

Even if it were true, Fev liked more than one beer and Id hazard that Tex Walker likes one too.  Liking a beer on even a semi regular basis wont hold back a footy career.

If they drink heavily frequently that might do it, but even one beer a day wouldnt be a death knell provided they were not out until all hours and it didnt stop them from putting in the hard yards.

Hopefully Pickett and LeBois/Polson/Sumner/SPS can start creating some real movement/fluidity/space in the forward line.....it's about having multiple legitimate options to goal, not just whether you're 199+cm.....

You can already see us trying to move the ball more deliberately during play.  Where it falls over somewhat is that when the pressure builds, the players release option is to go long to a contest, and our players have historically had issues dealing with that inferred pressure and are prone to using this get out a little too frequently.

They will improve this in time, but until they do, expect to see the chaos ball more often than not.

Composure is something that is difficult to teach, but once learned will go a long way for us.  Its one reason not to be overly concerned about players getting caught in possession because as they gain composure under pressure, they will invariably get caught more frequently as there is less rush involved in trying to build the play appropriately.

Ive watched Hawthorn do similar.  They sometimes bomb away knowing that once it gets down there, the boys will lock it in and put the opposition on the back foot through their forward pressure.  I think thats the part we do the worst rather than anything else.  The ball seems to come back too easily rather than anything else.

Bolton made sure that Weitering played on the competition's best forwards in his first season and he looked comfortable matched up with Franklin, the Riewoldts, Kennedy etc.  He has also looked comfortable leading into space as a forward.

I think that Weitering's development may progress more smoothly if he is able to focus largely on playing one position.  However, it's irrelevant whether that position is as a defender or a forward.  If he is to be used as a forward from time to time, I would prefer to see him starting there rather than being switched during the game.

One of the reasons Weitering was recruited is because he can play forward and back.

Hopefully, if our coach is as good as reported, then these two will have worked out a blueprint for Weitering for his entire career which incorporates the week to week.

In that open dialogue, Jacob would have identified what he wants to do, what role he sees himself performing in, and what KPI's he needs to meet to satisfy that criteria.  They would also have recognised that along with that, the team will have priorities that need to be met, in order for the team to achieve success, as well as the individual and that occasions will arise where roles will need to be played out of necessity, and provided the open dialogue is there, then both coach and player can tick that off and the world keeps spinning.  Some weeks, the KPI's will be met, and other weeks will be gap weeks where the player and coach will learn about how Jacob will need to develop his skills to satisfy all of the wants by coach, player and team.

Are we in the proffesional era??  this is where we are going and this is what I expect for not just Jacob, but each and all of our players moving forward.  A regular catchup where these sorts of things are discussed.
