Blah-Blah Bar / Re: US Presidential Election 2016
Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee, has just made a major gaffe during an MSNBC interview.  He was asked what he thought of Aleppo.  In a variation of Hanson's "Please explain", he asked, "What is Aleppo?"  He must have thought he was a contestant on Jeopardy.  The guy who asked the question looked like Johnson had vomited on the table as he explained it is the city at the epicentre of the war in Syria.

David Axelrod tweeted that this was probably a good time to use the "Sorry, I was high" card (he favours legalisation of marijuana and says he smokes it but he's promised not to do so in the White House).

Probably, this will help Clinton.  Trump does better in debates when he has more than 1 opponent whereas Clinton wants to zero in on Trump.  Johnson requires an average of 15% in certain polls to qualify for the debates.  He was sitting on only 9% and dropped slightly below that over the last week.  The opinion pollsters are shifting from polling registered voters to polling likely voters and the thinking is that this will work against him.  This unforced fumble will compound his problems.

The other benefit to Clinton is that Johnson is likely to take votes from her rather than Trump.  Republicans who dislike Trump may feel better about voting for a Libertarian than Clinton.  If he self-destructs, those voters may go to Clinton.  On the other hand, it's not likely that Johnson was ever going to lure voters who like Trump.

What an absolutely stupid question to ask.

No wonder American Politics is in the toilet.  Most of the American people wouldnt know what Aleppo is either.

Personally I'd like us to use the vfl for two reasons.

1. Development of our AFL level talent to help them learn what roles they need to be able to perform in the seniors.

2. Talent identification based on players who failed to get drafted.  Bring them into our vfl environment and if they show the right stuff get them to our club in future.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 22: Pre Game asking for a PP: Carlton vs Melbourne
Not much interest in our line up for Sunday?

It's a bit ho-hum with Sumner, Everitt and Graham added to last week's 22.

Murphy didn't get up and the match committee doesn't seem inclined to give Billy Gowers a run  ???

I haven't checked but is Gowers able to remain as a rookie at our footy club next seas?

If we have to delist him to rookie him again, then it makes sense that we haven't played him as we don't want him gaining too much value and going to the draft.

The Sports Desk / Re: Road to Rio
Just watched the Matilda's go down.  Bugger.  We are definitely not having much luck these Olympics.  But I did have to go to Wikipeadia to check the rules for penalty shoot outs and found this:

The keeper is forbidden from moving off the goal line to narrow the shooter's angle.

Be interested to hear from anyone who knows the game intimately (ex-players?) and whether they think the Brazilian crossed the line (no pun intended).

Sometimes they declare a retake but you'll find that keepers leave the line early a lot of the time and get away with it.

It's one of those rules not harshly enforced because the penalty is more of a lottery than anything else for keepers whilst it's stacked heavily against them.

Surely that's enough.

Watching the Republican Party exact it's revenge on Trump supporters as they try to reclaim their party after this farce finishes is going to be fascinating.

Definitely murdering the English language there,  but he is asking the pro gun people to vote against Hilary IMHO, not incite an assassination.  There are opponents better than her so why would he want her replaced?

Thing is its necessary for them to have gun reform but it's the one legislation that might sink Hilary.

They hold he entire fate of the team in their hands, they have to win the ball, then they have to hit the target.

It's 80% of the game result in their hands!

Precisely.   It's why moving people from half back up the ground can have mixed results.

I.e.  Dylan Buckley.

Fine playing off half back, putrid closer to goals.

Tuohy is better off half back and might be better closer to goals, but then we need a Tuohy replacement.

It's elementary.

The argument of attacking half backs or wing backs across codes has been brought up over and over again with usually the same results.

These players benefit from a few things.

1.  They see the game unfold ahead of them which means that they have more time to make better decisions in terms of when to attack and when not to.  This can be pivot.

2.  They usually are accountable for a man, who can be unaccountable as forwards often don't defend well hence why we use specific defensive forwards.  Get them up the ground all of a sudden they have more difficulty getting time and space as well as possession as their opponents can be much more accountable players making life more difficult.

3.  The ball comes at you often when the opposition are in possession making winning the ball easier.  Much different when you need to draw the ball up field.

I'm not saying don't try it, but I'd say we may have and no one noticed because it might not have worked that well.

Lots of calls for delistings but realistically you can only pick up 4 good players a year, 5 if all the stars align but that hasn't happened at Carlton since the year Sticks came over from Adelaide.
The players in the seniors today who aren't up to it are as good as we can put on the park, Charlie Curnow and Murphy will replace two of them and Byrne another one when and if he gets back from his knee, but there's no talent in the seconds to replace the other half dozen that need to be moved on.
Vojo and Clem Smith are almost certain to be delisted, Walks has retired and Jamison almost definitely will, that leaves another six or so maximum, and there's players like Lamb, Jones, Whiley, Tutt, Dick, Jaksch and Foster on our senior list who don't look capable of carving out an AFL career.
Most of the second raters who played in the seniors today will still be at Carlton next season, it's going to be a very slow process overhauling our list.

I'd rather move sheehan to our senior list and hope his body holds up than continue with some of the lesser skilled blokes or recruit pick 90 odd.  At least we know sheehan can play he has just been unlucky with injury.

I don't peddle the 'Poor Woman' trope.  She's plenty tough, as was Gillard.  But there's a clear difference in how ambition and career-building is viewed where women are concerned.  The Age ran a story yesterday that women don't get promotions because they don't ask for them.  But asking for them makes them ball-breaking bitches.  A bit of a catch-22 ...

What a load of crap.  Work is a boys club but not in the men vs female case like the feminist movement would have you believe.   Most men work a glass ceiling too, and seldom get places based on merit.

It's symptomatic of the world we live in.

Meanwhile the same men in the same circumstances resent women getting recognition for simply performing the same job as everyone else because they aren't a man.

In my work the only ones getting kudos are the ones who manage upwards not the ones who are necessarily most proficient.

Seems to be a similar story in other jobs I've had.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 18: Post Game In depth Analysis and Soul Searching: Carlton vs Sydney
Exactly.  Hendo has been an excellent addition to the Geelong defence.  It's just unfortunate that he didn't show the same effort in his last season with us.

We all knew he would.

Last season was as much about the players losing faith in the club as it was anything else.

When the club calls season over in round 3 there is not much you can say about guys who revert to just going and then walk out at the end of the year, but it does tell you about their desire or lack of it which is why none of them will ever win a flag.

Interesting enough last year when the going got tough the tough got going and got rough, thinking of Kreuzer, Ed Curnow,  Patrick cripps and a few others who are with us.  I think the blokes who should be most worried about their future with us are those that went missing last season.
