Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL Round 10: Northern Blues vs Box Hill at Box Hill
If we already know that certain players e.g. Jack S. are going to be around next year then there is no point rushing them into the seniors this year.

Where we are looking to make a decision on them this year then they may be given a game or two so that the decision can be made. I don't know whether Jaksch would fit into this category. The following

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/midseason-report-carlton-become-overachievers-20160615-gpjd7v.html

is an interesting article and it says that with BB's approach players who for instance can't hit targets will not be kept on, papers likely stamped, and that Dylan Buckley is a possible example in this category. Others struggling for a senior game for whatever reasons who are also possibly under the pump include Clem Smith, KJ, Liam Jones.

That also assumes they know what Bolton is thinking and what deals SOS will get done.

IMHO no one has papers stamped and given where we are at not getting a game has more to do with development of knowledge and skills whilst getting a game means there is no more for you to learn or that you can learn in the ones without hurting the team.

FWIW this is how we are going to get our stadium converted into an AFL one again.

Start the grants going to make it a boutique stadium for Women's football.

I can see the grants and approvals already.

Its funny how you can kill two birds with one stone at times.  the goal should be to do it for both.

I think we are treading a fine line here about being slightly mysoginistic with these comments.

Nup.

He won't coach, he might do some part time stuff or consultancy. Too cool for school is Juddy .

Good face to pull out for functions or things like this, but he's old Carlton.

I'm not sure I agree.

Judd symbolises what we wanted to become, and had no idea how to get there.

He was on the panel selecting a coach wasn't he?

The Judd effect is still being felt.

Until we got him our first rounders were turning into Jordan Russell.

After we got him, we end up with a bloke like Cripps.

The one thing that Bolton is really doing is showing just how broken this football club had been over the past twenty years, and he seems to be coaching us everywhere.

I know highlights don't tell the story, but Jaksch last goal appears to be him picking it up off the deck and converting after a marking contest where ball came to ground.

Not his marking contest, but it indicates that he can do it.

Is this what you guys are talking about?

I agree - it does sound good. The problem is, you have to be too flexible with the original acronym. SOS obviously stands for Son Of Serge. If you call him J-SOS, then it's Jack, Son Of Serge, which makes me feel squidgy, not to mention the fact that it leaves the door open for opposition supporters to make inferences that I'd rather not know about.
Son of Steve doesn't work?

Are you a depth player or a list clogger Thry?   ;)

You will be retired for a very long time so make the most of it while you can.  Playing every game as if it is your last might just keep the career going longer than you think.

Ahh that question is best left answered by my teamates I think.

As with any team, the difference between a list clogger and a depth player is simply perspective.

;D

So true about being retired.  Ive often stated ill go as long as my body will let me, but this year is looking more and more like my last.

Thanks guys.  Appreciate it.  Enjoy the game, and have a pie for me.

Being a depth player at age 33 for a soccer team invariably means that you eb and flow through the season and you take whatever games you can get as you never know when you have played your last one.

We could have a team of mobile big men running around creating mismatches all over the ground.

Watching Curnow move, he can play on-ball and can run all day every day. I think they want Gorringe doing similar (he's terrific below his knees), Everitt does similar and, if reports from GWS can be believed, they have been getting Tomlinson to run on the ball in the NEAFL and he's been getting ridiculous stats.

Will still need some small forwards and on-ballers but I really think we are looking to have a team that can't be matched up on easily. Multiple forward marking threats who have elite running capacity.

Chad Wingard might hit free agency elligibility soon....

Might be worth throwing a couple of dollars his way.

With the young fellas (KPs), its probably a little more complicated than doing what you have suggested in the 2's. Its a massive step up to AFL level for them from a physicality point of view. Jack is listed as 191kg and 93kg, I found the weight a little surprising. I saw him fairly close up at the Hall of Fame thingy and again at Etihad a few weeks ago, he didnt look 93kg to me. In any case, if they think he is ready physically, fine. I'd be surprised though.

I understand that, but that all depends on what role we get him to play.

i.e.  3rd tall leading forward, or better yet, a similar role to what Jed Lamb is playing and then play Lamb through the middle of the field.

Is it reasonable / fair / relevant to compare Gibbs' output to some of his contemporaries ?

Nope.

Its not fair to compare anyone to anyone.

They all have different strengths, weaknesses and abilities.

One of Gibbs is being a classy finisher and he didnt cover himself with glory in that regard on the weekend, but thats not necessarily a product of desire which is why he is being lambasted, but rather a product of having put in a herculean effort the week prior only to not be able to back up.

Some blokes are happy doing that week in and week out.  Others are not.

The fact that Brisbane came up with a plan to stop him (and it worked to a degree) is not a slight on Gibbs.  Sooner or later the best players have an off week.  Gibbs is not going to be regarded as one of the games greatest and wears more criticism because he was a number 1 draft pick and was selected ahead of Joel Selwood.

The measure of a player is what they do when they have an off week.  We will all agree that this week was potentially one of Gibbs worst 4 quarter performances as a player, but he still found a way to contribute, and thats important in itself.  Blokes who are not trying don't get 6 tackles to their name.  Graham ended up with 7 and Ed Curnow finished with 12 with Gibbs 3rd.  Happy enough to get down and get dirty when he couldnt find the ball himself, and thats enough I think.  Play your role, and do what you can.
