Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL Rd 7: Northern Blues vs Coburg
...Cuningham was disappointing. Maybe he's homesick. Showed dash on a few occasions but does not impose himself on the game. Did a pretty weave through traffic once but gee for a virtual first round draft pick he aint telling us why through his actions. His game today reminded me of the pre season game against the Dons where he was expected to be influential in the midfield but was lost...

What is going on with Cuningham? The pre-season reports sounded like he was flying. Is it nerves? Is it personal issues? Or is he just so far from being a footballer this could be the biggest drafting blunder ever?

He was team mates with Jack, so surely SOS knows something we don't.

I'm really hoping he makes it but haven't seen anything to suggest he'll even make it in the VFL. :-\

The result is pretty ugly but I wasn't too unhappy with our effort. In the past, 70+ point losses were just disgusting to watch.

We seriously lacked a genuine ruckman and key forward target. Gorringe certainly isn't a ruck man but he does some nice things, but then at times he doesn't show enough intensity. That could just be his lack of AFL experience, I dunno.

I think our best 22 can compete well but our depth is still really thin. I think Boekhorst might have to come in for Lamb and Jaksch for Walker.

I was impressed with the development of Byrne and Sumner. Coming along nicely.

In Dick's defence he was off for a long time with an iced quad and was his usual reliable self until injured.

Damning stat for mine is 3 hopefuls - Cuningham, Boekhorst and Rainbow having 1 (one, uno, solitarious) tackle between them! (I made up 'solitarious').

I actually thought Billy Gowers deserved a positive mention.

With, in regard to our talls, Tractor, Meat, Bluey the Ranga and probably Doully Mk 2 (Weits) out, Jaksch would be likely to get a call up. Wood would be an outside chance as well if not injured.

Boekhorst had 4, Cuningham had 4 and DVR had 1. ???

What a disgrace. Embarrassing.

For the third week in a row we started as if everyone had a valium sandwich before the game and only started playing after half time. And our opponents were up and about and really vocal. Buckley was about the only BlueBagger with a voice. What is it with this quietness on the field? It's very polite of us.

Mrs Baggers is still laughing her head off... she enjoyed the beach, I suffered through unbelievably bad football from our blokes and the loud gloating from Willi supporters.

SOS played for a half (his calf was iced in the 2nd half) and looked impressive... then again, anything alive would have looked good next to our blokes. Buckley tried his heart out and was full of dash. (Emergencies White and Graham didn't play).

Really, really, really reaching hard for any positives (apart from SOS) - MaCasker did a few nice things, Cuningham did 2 nice things, Boekhorst also did 2 nice things.... Tutt had plenty of it, didn't do much with his disposals but got plenty of it... Smith took a mark and fell over a lot... Rainbow laid a good tackle and gave a good handball... Jaksch took some marks... Foster did 2 reasonable spoils... looks like Dick did a quad (iced in the 2nd half)... Billy Gowers ran and baulked opposition players on 3 occasions!!!... Korcheck continued to be tall... I think you get the gist.

For mine, only Buckley and SOS looked like AFL footballers today.

Were they really good things? :-\

How was his work rate and attack on the footy?

I still reckon he needs to put on size. He mightn't get a whole lot bigger with his body type but he needs a few more Kgs IMO. During the preseason he said he needs to work on bulking up and his running capacity in an interview. That should've improved over the preseason and now it's about second efforts and being involved for four quarters.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 6: Post Game Passion: Carlton vs. Essendon
AFLCA Votes Rnd 6.

CARLTON v ESSENDON

9 Bryce Gibbs (Carl)
9 Dale Thomas (Carl)
5 Adam Cooney (Ess)
3 Kade Simpson (Carl)
2 Ed Curnow (Carl)
2 Courtenay Dempsey (Ess)

That's Gibbs equal top two weeks running, yet apparently many think we need to get rid of him while he still has some value! Frightening, that people think you can pick a replacement like buying a packet of smokes! :o

Against Freo and Essendon ::). If he gets 10 against North or Hawks then I might change my mind. For now, he's the best trade bait we have.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: The GWS Gang - Will They Or Won't They ??
I think for the ex-GWS players to be a success they just need to be best 22 or at least an improvement on what we already had.

Plowman > White
Phillips > Warnock
Sumner = Menzel (can't decide who I would have. Probably Menzel going by his best games but his worst was terrible)
Lamb > Ellard (not much of a difference though)
Jaksch > Giles
Whiley < Carrazzo

While we're at it...

Weitering > Jamison
McKay > Watson (confident this will be the case)
C. Curnow = Henderson (too early, Curnow is less of a sook)
Cuningham <<<< Judd (Cuningham pretty stiff with this comparison)
Kerridge > Holman
Wright = Bell (on output, but I think Wright is the better player)
Gorringe < Yarran (both freak athletes, both don't want it bad enough. Yaz had more runs on the board)
SOS > Walsh (different players, same appetite. SOS has better attributes)
Glass-McCasker > Fields (on raw ability and size)
Gallucci = Johnson (too early, leaning towards Gallucci)
Korcheck = Russell (Cat B. rookies - won't find out for a long time on this one)

I can comfortably say that we improved our list on last year.

mark fine said last night 1 lamb very soft 2 sumner not afl standard and that gws boys might move us 1 rung up the ladder that about it other words we are going no where .Did anyone else listen to sen .

Finey just comes out with stuff to stir the pot half the time. I wouldn't say Lamb is soft, nor hard, and Sumner hasn't shown anything to suggest he's out of place at AFL level.

He's a Saints supporter and dirty that we're not that far behind them in our rebuild. Once Riewoldt, Montagna, Fisher, Dempster etc. go they'll be in trouble.

For everyone that is saying our ex-GWS players are average, stop-gap, fringe players that aren't up to it need to pull their heads in. They've played less than 6 games in a team that supposedly has the worst list in history and aren't even 22yo yet. I'm not saying we've turned the corner just yet. We scraped home against two terrible sides in two terrible games of footy but to write them off is just ridiculous.

Give me a break.

Plowman and Sumner are locks for mine. Best of the GWS bunch. Both missed a hell of a lot of football and most of the preseason so to come into a new team and play solid footy with only a game and a half in the 2s is enough to suggest they'll be players.

Showing signs: Phillips, Lamb

Not convinced: Jaksch, Whiley

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 7 : Pre Game Thread - Blues v Pies
IN:
C. Curnow - offers a lot more around the ground than Jones and is good for his one goal
Cripps - no brainer

OUT:
Jones - Still doesn't do enough but he does have a go. Just not good enough IMO.
Graham - I think he'll be in and out quite a bit for us. Solid footballer but no game changer. Handy depth.

We still need a lot more class on our list but it's nice to see blokes fighting for spots for a change.
