Blah-Blah Bar / Re: DIY
To be fair, that's one of the main reasons I've got that on the list of things I should pay other people to do. I'll be taking some time off work to set up the house, I don't know if I want 80% of that time to be used just painting. There's heaps of other stuff we'll be doing ourselves as it is.

I will check out some of the YouTube vids though and see if I think I'll be able to do the flooring.

Thanks heaps  :)

Buy good LED floodlights, not the old halogen type. The LED type are ultra-bright, won't catch fire or blow if you knock them over, are light weight easy to move so you can illuminate many angles. Once you have decent lighting you can paint anytime of day, if you have rubbish lighting the painting and prep work will look great in the evening and then when the sun rises you'll be disappointed.

Some sort of hand held light for inspecting along the walls, shining at a shallow angle to see shadows from hair, debris, high or low spots is also very useful. Good cutting in brushes are essential, don't get sucked into buying those gadgets that claim they cut in, they generally don't work or don't work for very long.

The Sports Desk / BBL - One State Teams Advantaged?
There is a growing movement to see second BBL teams established in some of the single team states.

It would seem to me the critics have a point, SA and WA in particular have a significant advantage given the wealth and resources in those states.

Is it fair to have WA and SA telling the country how much GST they should receive from the wealth they generate, and then argue that they are too poor to support a second team?

Proponents for the change are saying it's too easy for the wealthy single state teams to attract and retain players.

I think Qld is borderline, simply because it's Qld and many players do not want to go there, the state basically runs on welfare, and there are too many issues with social boundaries in the North, Central and South of the state. North Qld thinks it's another country, Central thinks it runs the show and the Southern Border believes they are part of NSW. ;D

I appreciate Tassie shouldn't come into the consideration, it's GDP and population is a bit low to sustain two teams.

This call seems consistent with the AFL's national stance, but I appreciate the AFL "subsidises" some teams, at least in principle if you can call it a subsidy.

I suppose Perth and Adelaide would defend their patch as vigorously as The Melbourne Storm!

The Sports Desk / Re: The Third Test in the Ashes Series - WACA (14 December)
He's a Marsh though. Seriously though, I think Justin Langer is having a big influence on selection lately, hence Agar into the squad for sydney

Yep, they are opportunistically going after Matthew Page as well. He's in the gun for leaving WA and they are going to put him on a pike for the Boxing Day pitch.

Not one media outlet has published the fact that the wickets were prepared by Sandurski before he left for the GABBA, even though the media know full well it takes more than half a year to prepare a drop in pitch, and Page didn't join the MCC until after the WACA test!

Langer... FMD... No wonder we're carp, when are we going to get fair dinkum and get smart people without BS agendas around the team?

The problem remains that top level sports administration is just like suburban or regional sports administration, it's the domain of the old boy!

AFL, Cricket, NRL and Soccer in Australia could easily be labelled semi-professional due to the way administrative appointments are handled.

Too many "Old Boys" with a finger in the pie!

Do not know how correct this is but talking to a grounds-person she said the big problem is drop in pitches are isolated from drawing moisture from the rest of the ground. This creates a problem with how they are managed and the way they behave after rain.

The match regulations prevent ground-staff watering the pitch directly, but they used to be able to water the surrounds which would migrate up through the soil and have some effect on the pitch moisture levels. So the woman I talked to basically said the ICC need to change the rules to make some form of direct watering for drop in pitches an option, then you will get see pitches that vary with venue, break up and crack like they used to and all the varying conditions.

Sounds reasonable.

PS;
I agree with Warne's call for a Day/Night Boxing Day Test.

The reason is simple, you can blame the pitch for the lack of deviation, but you cannot blame the pitch for the lack of movement in the air, that is just down to the weather. It seems that a big advantage of Day/Night cricket is that the evening session almost certainly guarantees some form of swing. Even in Adelaide where movement through the air is normally minimal we saw plenty of late swing.

Curator shouldn't get another gig.
24 wickets in 5 days is a blight on test cricket

David Sandurski resigned from the MCG on the 17th of Nov and took up the GABBA job. But he basically prepared all this seasons drop in pitches.

He will be replaced by Matthew Page who is moving across from the WACA after the ground hosted it's last match. So the expectation is that next years pitches will be completely different.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2018 - What do you expect from the club?
Just on Cam Polson, he kind of reminds me of a young Marc Murphy in the way he runs at times. Hope he can get a sustained run at it for Northern, because he could turn out to be a player. Like a lot of these guys, they just need time to build their confidence.

Agreed, he already seems to show more than the likes of Graham or Lamb at the same stage of their career. Looks smart, I suppose the question remains about his durability at AFL level, but if he gets things right he could be a 200 game player.

Our next Wright!

I expect a rapid rise up the ladder without excuse!

We've hung some pretty good coaches over the last 1-1/2 decades without any regard for injuries or external influences.

BB should not get any slack, he's no longer a 1st year coach, if he was a player he'd be coming up for contract renewal and would have to show progress and form to earn a contract.

I know it's cold, but it's reality!
