Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Post Game Pain: Carlton vs Port Adelaide
Thank God that one is over. It will go down as our worst effort of the year by a long way. We did nothing in any quarter and played poorly in all aspects. I find it difficult to think of any positives from this. Malthouse will not be happy and I don't blame him.

They are surely taking the piss with Menz, Cripps or Watson to come in.
Armfield is a bit stiff. He did OK when he came on last week. However, I don't see Menzel is a certainty yet, so Armfield may get a reprieve.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Our Inability to Win Close Games
Once we start winning a few of these close ones, we'll get better at doing it.
However:
[1] Our decision making under pressure and skills need the most work. Docherty especially often kicks the ball on the full near the end of games, something he doesn't do so much earlier. Nor is he alone. Wood's kick from defence, had it been bouncier or considerably longer, would have been a winner. As it was, it was almost the worst possible option.
[2] Picking the right option will get better, but needs to be addressed. Sheehan, for example, couldn't quite kick the ball the way Sam Rowe needed it with about 1 minute to spare. It might have been a good option, but it wasn't optimum: Rowe was 1 against 3. Sheehan will learn.
[3] Confidence: Geelong believe they will win close ones. It is our job to get to the point where WE believe. Then we will give those felines a good spaying.
[4] Fitness: quite a number of our guys don't quite play out the game. Tom Bell is one noticeable case, especially as one of his strengths is his running. Judd is another, with no real surprise considering his injuries. A lot of our guys are in the same boat. If we have that extra bit of fitness, we can handle things that bit better and we only need to be a little bit better.
[5] A more even contribution: we often have a number of guys who don't have much of the ball. If they can lift just a few percent, then we win contests that could be the difference.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Carlton vs. Port Adelaide in Adelaide on Friday
Don't agree with playing Watson.   Has had his chance.

x2. Failed at every opportunity given.
If we lose too many bodies, I would give Watson a go. Provided he started forward and was left there for at least a half. He has only 1 chance left to save his career with us. Personally, I doubt that he can save his career, but I would not begrudge him the chance.
Garlett and Lucas are similarly at the crossroads. I think Lucas has had it, but if we don't have enough fit mids, then he must be given a chance. He, at east, has been getting plenty of the ball in the VFL. Others have not.
Garlett may end up staying, but that is no certainty. If Menzel doesn't come up, and I would err on the side of caution with someone who is so important to our future, then Garlett is the logical replacement.
None of these guys DESERVE a game, but if they are necessary, then they should be played.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 21: Jim Park medal Voting: Carlton vs Geelong
Team:   B
We were really brave, but we still lost. Can’t get better than a B.

Votes:
[3]   Carrazzo
[2.5]   Gibbs
[2]   Judd
[1.5]   Waite
[1.5]   Bell
[1]   Murphy
[1]   Tuohy
[1]   Yarran
[0.5]   Curnow
[0.5]   Rowe
[0.5]   Sheehan

Explanations:
[3]   Carrazzo:   After being obliterated in the 1st quarter, Carrots came back to be the most influential player on the ground, keeping Selwood to 4 possessions in half a game of football, while doing a great job himself.
[2.5]   Gibbs:   Would have been worth more votes had he controlled his direct opponent, Caddy. However, he was instrumental in getting the ball out from stoppages.
[2]   Judd:   Judd will not be at his best until next year, but he was damn good for a guy still not close to 100%.
[1.5]   Waite:   Another good effort from Jarrod
[1.5]   Bell:   For a guy as fit and able to run for so long, Tom Bell never sees out a game. He always runs out of juice in the last quarter. Pity, as he was a fine performer.
[1]   Murphy:   A very different role for Murphy, but one that involved 10 tackles. But missing that goal was unforgiveable.
[1]   Tuohy:   One of his best games for the season, he did well.
[1]   Yarran:   This could have been a 3 vote game bit the mistakes were critical, especially by foot. I just don’t know why his kicking was so off, but it cost us 5 goals at least. His goal was special and he really controlled Motlop.
[0.5]   Curnow:   Didn’t do as well as keeping his man quiet, but he did get a lot of ball himself.
[0.5]   Rowe:   Good job in defence, not so good in attack.
[0.5]   Sheehan:   A good game 2nd up. Looking promising.

Honourable Mentions:
Menzel:   Pretty good until injured. But needed to kick more goals.
Wood: Probably beaten on the day, but rucked his best.
Armfield:   Not on for long, but did a good job when he came on.
Jamison:   Probably beaten by the Fat Man, but worked hard and barely had a goal against him.
Docherty: Too many errors, but he really shows he has a future.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Carlton vs. Port Adelaide in Adelaide on Friday
Quote
Troy Menzel: suffered an AC joint sprain to his left shoulder, which is a reoccurrence of the injury sustained in Round 18.
Scans cleared Menzel of any structural damage and he will be a test this week.

Pretty sure an injury would be more likely to "reoccur" if hadn't been treated adequately in the first instance. LEARN FROM IT FFS!!
I hope they learn and give him the week off. Get it right! The Weagles took 2 years of Judd's career by playing him with screwed up groins. That sort of thing is stupid! Look after our players so they last!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Carlton vs. Port Adelaide in Adelaide on Friday
Given our injuries, we will not start favourites in either of our last 2 games. That said, we are a good chance because we look to be good at separating true contenders from pretenders. We ARE playing as well as anyone in the competition at the moment.
However, there are some scenarios:
[1] We win both game. We remain 13th, as the Weagles are 2 game in front of up and have a huge percentage.
I don't think it is very likely, but it would be nice to put Port and Essendon in their place.

[2] We win 1 game. We remain 13th unless either Brisbane or the Bulldogs win both. Not a very likely scenario. Brisbane take on Freo and Geelong, the Bulldogs take on Sydney and the Giants. The Dogs will probably win one game, which would leave us in 13th spot.

[3] We win 0 games: the most likely alternative. We stay in 13th place unless Brisbane or Western Bulldogs win 1 game. Now the Dogs should beat the Giants. If that happens, we go to 14th and get a better pick.

So, we have the opportunity to get some wins with no penalty. I like that idea.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2014 Jim Park Medal - Follow to see who is leading
Carlton defeat Gold Coast and expel them from the finals:
With only a couple of round to go, things are heating up in the Jim Park medal voting. More voters and better scores reflect the better efforts of recent times. May they continue.

The race for top spot is well and truly on. Third place is pretty much settled, but 4th and 5th is again very tight.
