Title: Round 11 Carlton v Brisbane
Post by: Lods on May 27, 2014, 05:23:42 pm
Carlton v Lions
4.40 Saturday 31st May
Gabba

Are we going to worry about this game?....we don't seem in a rush to talk about it :D

A game we should win... but these have been ones we've dropped in the past.
Need to be switched on.

A smart coach. One trying to bring him back gradually.  ;)

Unless you dont believe it was the way he was pushed as he kicked it that caused the injury? Or you dont believe Judds own words?

Juddy will tell us when he's ready.. Only he will know.

As I understand it, Juddy could well be coming back via the Northern Blues.
I can't believe I just wrote that, but considering that Juddy has played 6 minutes of footy in 2014, having a game to brush off the cobwebs may not be an error.
I must admit I haven't worried about this game, even though it could be the last win for a while. Brisbane have really struggled to get a competitive side onto the field this year. They don't appear to be having a he number of 'ins' either.
This is the type of game we have stuffed up before. I'd like to think that we are taking it very seriously and that we'll pumble them in the first quarter. However, ....

It also sounds like we will not be on free to air TV, so I won't be seeing the game. I really hate that. But the 'Dream Time at the G' appears to be what will be on TV: what a sorry excuse for a spectacle that is.

Im confident we'll win comfortably. Im more interested in the teams support of Doc, from that ugly spiteful irish loud mouth who intimated shortly after Docs defection, that there'd be some rough stuff when next they meet.

I suspected he won't be back for a few weeks just yet. Why rush him now.

Players get pushed like that every week. I definitely believe Judd and that the push made him travel at 25 times the speed of light. :P

Or a dumb coach, happy to sit 30 year olds on the bench for an hour after they warm up, then they get a soft tissue injury from a normal common football incident!

Playing this week makes no sense.  If we can't beat Brisbane without him, then the season's shot anyway.  And getting him to play his first game back after a plane flight wouldn't be ideal.  Seems to me the approach should be to wait until Judd and the doctors think he's ready and then give him another week or two off.

Definitely agree.

Perhaps I'm delusional, but I'd like to think the NB's could beat the Lions. I reckon Leppa's team is like the second coming of the Bad News Bears.

At the time he was coming back we lauded Hawthorn's approach with Brian Lake and co playing through the VFL.

How has that worked out for their longevity in their return?

The fact of the matter is, Chris unfortunately hurt himself when he returned.

Brian Lake has since gone down and only lasted a couple of weeks too.  Either they came back too soon from their previous injuries and then suffered compensation injuries or they were ready to return and injured something else in the process.

Either way, I think we can all agree, that most injuries are down to bad luck as much as anything else.   That same incident could have occurred at the start of a VFL game for all we know, and then he would have been back too soon, or he might have played without incident.  Either way, only Judd knows how he felt going in, and he looked absolutely chomping at the bit to get into the game.  Likewise Giansiracusa puts to rest the theories about age and being the substitute being a factor.

In any case, we await the great one's return.   There is a positive in all of this missed footy for Judd.  He wont want to go out like this, so odds are he will play another year, and its a year "out of the fray" which might actually help him tack on an extra year or two to his longevity if he decides to go on playing.

I agree. I also think it would be foolish to plan to ease a player back into the game in this manner. Anyone who dons the substitute vest must be able to play four full quarters.

It was a spot of bad luck. If he hurt his Achilles again by all means I would be furious because it would indicate poor management by the club.

He shouldn't be playing this week regardless IMO, to soon.

No Judd but Bucks is in!

Chris Judd will miss Carlton's Round 11 clash with Brisbane at the Gabba – but the good news is he looks set to return the following week.

Football Operations Manager Andrew McKay says Judd will train fully this week – the only question is where he'll be making his comeback, with a rare stint in the VFL a possibility.

"Still not sure at the moment," McKay said.

"He's the type of quality player who could come straight back into the senior team, but that needs further discussion."

Tagger Ed Curnow is on track to return at the same time as Judd, after suffering a fractured leg against the Western Bulldogs.

Meanwhile Dylan Buckley will be available to play after copping a knock to the hip against the Crows.

But a slight setback from Tom Bell whose injured finger became infected.

"He's going back to the specialist tomorrow so we'll find out more then," McKay said.

"He certainly won't play this week and we'll wait on the advice of the surgeons tomorrow.

If we are serious about having improved, and we are supposedly under the guidance of the "master", then this discussion should not even be occurring. When we compare lists, coaches, ladder position, injuries etc., we are a 15 goal better team that this mob.

I just can't bear the thought of losing this game.

To play a footballer named Chris Judd in the VFL would be ludicrous IMO, imagine how many VFL listed players would target him just to say "i knocked out Chris Judd on the footy field". Fork that!! He comes straight back into the seniors when he feels he is good and ready and thats that! Blokes like Judd just dont play 2's, simple as that.

The VFL talk is because of the conclusion some came to that Judd did his hammy because he wasn't ready for senior footy, which is complete bollocks.

Having said that though, you could probably make a case for him coming back via the Magoos just to get some touch.

I can see this happening.

I'm with you Paul, although these are precisely the conditions that would normally see us fall over.

We are clearly underdone.
We have notched up three wins in a row and this will make it four (provided we win).
We are travelling interstate which increases the likelihood that we might not switch on.
A few of the guys in our team would be playing with us interstate for the first time.
Brisbane are this year's wooden spoon for sure, but still have weapons that can hurt teams if they fire.

We should go in expecting a win.

Our playing group has form, this is a perfect storm for us.  Next you will hear that the Lions are paying $5 for a win.  Jump on that, it's good value.  We should win this match, and we should win easily but that is the reason why we are most likely to not show up for this one.

As always, it needs a coordinated team effort to handle Brown. Mids need to block supply, and minimise any high balls in the F50 that leave Brown in a one on one contest. Has the strength, experience and footy smarts to beat any of our guys all day every day in a one on one. And still one of the better set shots in the comp. He needs to be dragged up the ground, run off his feet, and  double teamed if things don't go our way.

Need a serious win here. The close and scrappy wins are good enough but I would like a bit more momentum and confidence especially with the Cats next week.

The players should now hopefully see how lame and pathetic those losses to Richmond and Melbourne were and not let it happen again, and that if you bring effort you are always a chance.

The irony is that I feel this the most balanced lineup we've had even under Ratten so if we could just fix up the between the ears stuff that would be good.

You'd have to think so. Patfull, Mayes and Rockliff are HUGE ins for them, but .....
I am disappointed that Armfield will miss: I was worried that he'd been dropped when I saw the news. That would have been stupid after last week's game, but strange things have happened before. However, being injured I can accept him missing out and I hope he is right for next week.
I hope Buckley is OK: I hate playing unfit guys.

One of the commentators (can't remember who) has a rule of thumb that if you make 5 or more changes you lose.  Maybe that would be different if you had 5 stars coming back in after each served 1 week's suspension, but that's not the case here.

There’s others at the lower level that we’ve been able to match for a period of time so I’d put Carlton in that category.

Quote
“The year’s proven so far the top four or five teams we’ve played — like Sydney, Port, Hawthorn, Geelong — we haven’t quite been able to match them for long periods of time,” he said.

There’s others at the lower level that we’ve been able to match for a period of time so I’d put Carlton in that category.

What more motivation to we need for a 100pt win  >:D

More ammo to use, what more incentive do we need to smash these guys back to the Bear days? >:D >:D >:D

I don't like the way we get set up for a fall every pre-match, it's like every team we are coming up against is a premiership contender(A Danger Game).

I understand that you cannot under-rate teams and that the competition is close, but there are games you just have to win if you are to move forward and you should be expecting to win them. Not telling everyone how good the opponent is!

You never hear Chelsea saying that West Brom is a danger game or that it is going to be tough. Home or away West Brom fans go to the game to see a good showing in a game against Chelsea but not expecting a win! Chelsea go there expecting to win!

Aaahh you hark back to the good old days where we just had to play one quarter of football, THE PREMIERSHIP QUARTER. ;)

LP...Being a Chelsea supporter I always get nervous playing Crystal Palace...ManU, Liverpool...not a problem but vs some of the minnows we struggle....
I think my concerns with Brisbane are more about timing...we have been up a while, they have been down and are due to win , they have some better players back and we are coming off a hard game...

Dear Carlton Football Players and Facility.
this year we are celebrating our 150th year and you have chosen the hashatag to be ‪#‎UNITED‬! WHY? Today at the Gabba, local support and cheersquad members who have made their way up to support you this weekend, atteneded a light training session. the fans (approx 20-30) were given a particular seating/viewing area where you trained right in front of. at the end you walk straight off, no thank yous, no waves or thumbs up NOTHING...THIS IS WHY MEMBERSHIPS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE. no love for the fans. YOU TRAINED RIGHT IN FRONT OF US it would of taken 10 minute to sign the young kids jumpers and get a photo with your supporters, not to forget thanking cheersquad members for traveling all this way just to support you as well as provide a banner!! Yall need to take into consideration the fans as without youd have no careers or club!!!!!! #UNITED ‪#‎takealonghardlookatyourselves‬

I reckon this is a beat up!

Would the players be informed that "approx. 20-30" supporters are sitting in a particular area and should be acknowledged at the end of training?  I think not.

I would have been happy just to have a seat from which to watch training.  Being a supporter is about supporting your team, not being pandered to by players whose focus should be on preparing for their next game.

We don't know for sure what the situation was but you'd think the majority of casual folk watching the Blues train would be Carlton supporters.
On a once a year trip you would like to think the team would be encouraged to do a quick meet and greet with the fans.

Nah, this is poor administration, they are probably sh1te scared to tell MM he has to wait 5 mins to talk to the players. I recall McGuire having to step in at Collingwood when they started snubbing fans in the early 2000s. MM was and can still be pretty cold to fans and supporters, in this respect he may not be living his mantra!

So it's not the players fault, it's the Executive and the Membership departments that are to blame for being too piss weak to tell the MC the players need to show fans some respect!

You're a hard man DJC.

Maybe next time I am 50/50 about going to the game I will give the players the same amount of my time as they gave their supporters. You sign a jumper and you have a potential supporter for life.

If they snubbed Bluesgirl they need their ar5e kicked, didn't they use Bluesgirl and her friends to promote the club once in the past! It would be like not acknowledging Zwarry and her boy! (Oh, I forget they did that as well once!)

My boy played little league for Hawks and for Carlton, Hawthorn kept them back 5m away from the players. Carlton back in 2003 let the players like Whitnall and others high five them as they ran back on the ground. He is a life long Blues fan now, that was perhaps the tipping point!

Massaging supporters is important but it won't mean a fat rat's clacker if we lose.

The focus must be on preparation for the game but that's not to say that the club couldn't have arranged for a couple of players (perhaps those who won't play) to sign autographs.
