Title: The CSC Music Appreciation Thread
Post by: Tribey72 on July 16, 2013, 04:55:34 pm
Saw that we did not have this kicked off yet...

So in honour of my avatar let's kick it off with one of my favourite songs from Melbourne band the Twits...

Same era.... different bloke. ;)
Buddy was also a member of the Mixtures and for a while he was also with the Seekers while Bruce Woodley took a break in the 70's

Steve Earle was best known for his mainstream hit "Copperhead Road" but he had a heap of other great tracks over his career including this one "When The People Find Out", I bet you can't help but tap your foot to this country bop with its infectious 'call & response' gospel chorus.

Another act that gets some airplay on The Devil's Jukebox is a faux-Russian band called The Red Elvises, here is a sample of their handiwork, both songs are from the same album :

Here's one for Tribey, a terrific garage-psyche revival band called The Black Hollies, they certainly get a good run on The Devil's Jukebox :

This is the first song I ever played on the radio program, it's by Melbourne gothic-mariachi specialists Graveyard Train from their second album 'The Drink, The Devil & The Dance' (an absolute blinder of an album if I don't say so myself). I had the pleasure of interviewing Josh from the band on the show which went very well. The clip is an extended version with some arty stuff at the front of it, the song doesn't start till 1:12 but its worth waiting for :

Last one for today, this is a four-piece Sydney band called Kill City Creeps with ex-Dolly Rocker Movement singer & guitarist Dan Darling out the front, the other three members of the band were all girls. They had gone into the studio and recorded what they intended to be their debut full-length album but for reasons unknown, they unfortunately split up earlier this year before it got finished. They did release a five-track EP which is full of killer tracks like this one 'La La Blues' :

Allright, seeing as you asked for just one more, here is something to mellow out this fine selection of toons. This is by Ananda Shankar and you guessed it, he is related to the world-famous sitar player, his uncle Ravi Shankar, the man who The Beatles grew to love. Ananda never reached the same heights his uncle did in the 60's but he did have some influence in the early 70's as evidenced by this incredible east-meets-west version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" which appeared on his self-titled debut album of 1970.

Peace ..... love ...... om.

Had to do a fill in last night for another show and decided to open it with this belting funkified cover of the Zep classic "Whole Lotta Love" by Tina Turner, an artist I've grown to admire immensely.

Also chucked in this sitar filled psyche head-swirler from The Beatles on the show. Interestingly, this was one of the very few tracks that they never did live on stage because all of the tape loopings & over-dubs could not be repeated again.

Bet if you didn't read it here, you would never have picked this as the Bee Gees, taken from their first album (imaginatively titled "Bee Gees 1st") it is so far removed from all of their other material especially with the Gregorian chant & mellotron at the start.

Most of my music tastes run along gospel and Christian contemporary lines, but I won't take you there.......... too often !!

Here is the intro (my favourite part!) to my all time favourite music DVD. If you have never seen the whole DVD, do yourself a favour !!!!!

Put up a few of your favourite gospel tracks Amers, I'd be more than keen to listen. I'm a big fan of the old school gospel music, especially the stuff that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Even went to an all-black gospel church when I visited the U.S. some years back, one of the highlights of my life !!

Here's a gospel track for you, the fabulous Dixie Hummingbirds from their "Diamond Jubilation : 75th Anniversary" album, it's got a cajun/zydeco tweak to it as well. If this doesn't make you feel uplifted then I don't know what will. :-)

I love my music Sheik, I'm just very aware that my tastes are not main stream !!

I don't know a lot of black gospel, but I like it, I reckon I've seen the Dixie Hummingbirds on a movie or 2 !! I know more about the gospel Quartets.

Here is 1 of my favourite songs, Daddy sang bass, written by Carl Perkins and sung here by Johnny Cash.

[flash=600,400]http://www.youtube.com/v/NGUP8oc9Bgs[/flash]

I have been heavily influenced by Johnny Cash, I read his biography as a kid and while I'm not a great country fan, I like Cash's music.

I also love a good bass voice !! Here is 1 of the best, J.D. Sumner singing 'Why me Lord' with Elvis, a song written by Kris Kristofferson.

[flash=600,400]http://www.youtube.com/v/SV6ICc7YXAA[/flash]

I'd never heard a lot of Elvis until recently when I started listening to some of his gospel stuff. Man he had a good voice !!

This last 1 makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, tell me what you reckon?
It's a Bill Gaither song sung by Bill Gaither and friends called 'Because He lives'.

Cash & Elvis are old faves.

Not too sure about that gospel track, I prefer the old black groups, they seem to sing with more passion & conviction for me.

If only some of our younger folks understood the impact this dude had on music, including his influence on some of the big names in music. RIP JJ... you are a music giant.

Funny how songs trigger memories. Whenever I hear 'After Midnight' I'm right there as a junior sailor heading out of Sydney heads for Asia (2SM was piped throughout the ship).

Seeing as we're going down memory lane, I bought my first cassette player in Papua New Guinea in 1972 and one of the few decent cassettes I could buy was Chain's "Towards the Blues".

While I was out scrambling up and down the highlands, one of my comrades, who had been 'casevacced' with a 'sore ankle', was lazing in the Lae barracks and playing 'Black and Blue' over and over until he wore out my cassette.  Every time I hear 'Black and Blue' I think about humping a 25 set radio through the New Guinea highlands  :)

I have a cousin whose name is Judd who sings in the Melbourne Gospel Choir, he also picks up some interesting solo gigs every now and again.

Judd is the voice of ALL the St Kilda players for their  recent Virgin video entry !! Judd is a huge Hawks supporter so I'm not sure his heart was right in it !!

And then I saw this today on Judd's facebook page;

Judd - Ok so just off to do some vocal coaching for Sam Newman.... #YepThatWasRandom #LifeIsFullOfSurprises

Friend1 -  Just another day in the life of..... Ho hum. Details please?

Friend2 - Good on you...Sam is wonderbar and could really do with your expert guidance.

5 hours later

Judd - Wow what a lovely guy he is, very humble and genuine... And there you go don't judge a book by its cover.

Friend3 - Player review warmups?

Judd - Haha no his album, he actually has a very warm singing voice tone, I'm impressed.

Anyone hitting the Big Day Out next year?

I went earlier this year especially to see the Chili Peppers (lucky enough to have seen them twice now). craphouse thing about it was that I'd spent all day in the booze cage due to there being a whole host of acts I'd never heard of, so was on the piss from about 12 midday til night time when I got myself a great spot near the front of the pit, only for me needing to piss about 10 minutes before showtime. Others around urged me to just piss in the pit....couldn't bring myself to do it. Maybe I wasn't plastered enough?  ;D Ended up going to the pisser then getting a less than perfect spot.

Might time it a bit better for Pearl Jam and Blur next year at Big Day Out.  ;D

Its not a fair comparison to judge music of the past with some of the rubbish on the charts at the moment. Years ago it was about talent and listening quality. Not only that but listening to the story the artist is trying to tell. Now it is all about a marketable product involving looks, hairstyles, synthesized music and lyrics that are completely rubbish. I don't understand half of it. In fact you will catch me listening to ABBA before I listen to most of the music in the charts today.

Sorry I had to disclose that information about me. :P

Agree...the standard of musicianship today is rubbish and the lyrics bordering primary school stuff.....I'm still listening to Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Concrete Blonde and the like..

Mants...check out a Finnish band called "Nightwish"...have had three very good female lead singers over the journey, they can really sing......opera meets metal.....reckon you might like them.

I'm half expecting Beavis and Butthead to give a running commentary on this song - such is the early mid 90's feel to it.

Not sure if anyone saw the Abba documentary on ABC the other night (was actually quite interesting), but they had some footage of the ABBA chicks in the '70's style navy blue jumper... I've seen the photo of that before, but not actual footage. I don't how that came about, but what a brilliant move.

They also had some footage of the ABBA chicks in bikinis...

Let me brag for a minute !!

It is also footy and music related!

And then I saw this today on Judd's facebook page;

I was surprised by his thoughts on Sam.  :o

this slipped through

How did your cousin go with Sammu?

I don't know any more than what I have already posted LR, see red highlights!

There is no official video but purists will tell you this is the greatest Cold Chisel song, always has been.

Ian Moss is sublime, Walker delivers a poetic masterpiece and Barnes is at his best.

Queen touring with a new frontman in Adam Lambert......I'm a big fan of Queen but only Paul Rodgers has done justice to Queen as a frontman by not trying to be Freddy Mercury and putting his own take on their material.
Lambert is some wannabe Freddy look alike american idol winner and doesnt impress me at all.....
