Ladies Lounge / AFLW 2019 List Changes
Interesting times given new teams arrive in 2020.

Not sure what Mo Hope does wrong, I thought I heard she played OK in a couple of AFLW/VFLW games since dropping all that weight but she got kiboshed again.

Rumors Tayla, Vescio, Davey, Harrington and the twins have all been approached. But under the AFLW rules this isn't a shock it's just normal, it's like they want to start and build this competition with maximum free agency. I think that's a bit tough on clubs if nothing else from a marketing and branding perspective, they should be able to secure the marquee players that they invest heavily in a little longer than just a season or two. But I suppose it's more complex give the girls are really only semi-professional status and want to do stuff like have babies. The idea they can be sportswomen as well as wives and mothers, something us old blokes need to get our head around!

The Sports Desk / Sheffield Shield Final
Watching on Kayo, just do not understand why this cricket isn't FTA.

I think despite being well on top in the final, as I understand the new points rules it's 50/50 in the final under the new rules.

NSW have taken the points in the first 100 overs so if it's a draw they win, is that correct?

Ladies Lounge / Tayla Harris vs Trolls
Just on the CheatsTV pissweak reaction to those trolls pestering Tayla Harris.

Firstly, what a bunch of fecking morons CheatsTV really are, it just exposes the true attitude of the AFL and CheatsTV towards the AFLW, no wonder their station and organisation appears full of Dankettes and drug apologists. CheatsTV is a forking disgrace and should be excluded from all future broadcast rights negotiations. There is some true irony when their talent describes Sam Newman as a dinosaur, I hope Sam Lane has enough willpower to call them out on air!

Secondly, Carlton fans this is why I demand our club becomes less passive and more pro-active in the media. The loudest voices supporting Tayla should be Carlton fans and the Carlton Football Club. Our board members and executive should have stormed the media last night demanding respectful treatment. Carlton fans and the Carlton football club get around Tayla Harris and build the culture, if you don't it's just another sign you'll give up the line meekly and mildly.

Finally, what a freaking superstar Tayla is, what a role model for everyone.

The Sports Desk / NRL cut fines for favourites.
Some might believe the NRL is playing favorites

The Storm must feel aggrieved at the lettuce leaf slaps offered to the Sydney clubs for extended and repeated salary cap violations, some clubs even including breaches while under prior suspension.

But really is it a sign that the NRL isn't doing so well fiscally, would an extra $350K send an NRL club broke?

It feels like more is going to come out of this, serious times for the small game, is it losing it's roots?

Blah-Blah Bar / Stuff Apple get Amazon
OK, a different topic.

Some of you will be aware of the controversy regarding the proposed Apple Store to built in Melbourne's CBD. In a district that was previously allocated for arts, community and entertainment it seems a odd fit.

But if the city council is going to allow this area to become heavily commercialized, then why go half-arsed about it. I'd boot Apple and court Amazon to build a major secondary headquarters there instead! Jeff Bezos is a much better fit for the direction Australia wants to head in than Apple selling us yet another version of the same thing!

Leave the vacuous bling to Sydney and instead fill Melbourne with some substance!

Blah-Blah Bar / Opal Tower
Well, would you want to live in a joint built by this crowd!

Perfect timing to prove beyond doubt corruption persists, poor bastards can't even have Christmas without white-ants and parasites taking away their happiness!

Blah-Blah Bar / Rock n Roll HoF
OK, I realise I'm not worldly by music standards, but really?

Quote
Janet Jackson joins her brother Michael and the Jackson 5 as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning induction on Thursday along with Stevie Nicks and the top fan vote-getter, Def Leppard.

Radiohead, The Cure, Roxy Music and The Zombies also join.

Janet Jackson, is Kylie in there? (Yes, I'm being sarcastic!)

Blah-Blah Bar / The Rage Plagiarism?
OK, some of you have no doubt read John Le Carre novels.

I read this articles in The Rage today, supposedly an outline of events that lead to the arrest of Huawei's CFO.

https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/how-the-five-eyes-cooked-up-the-campaign-to-kill-huawei-20181213-p50m24.html

You'll be alarmed at noticing similarities between this "investigative report", if you can call it that, and John Le Carre's novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I looked for the line that read, April Fools, but couldn't find it!

In my opinion The Rage should add a new disclaimer for articles like this, "Fantasy by Plagiarism"

Robert Heatley Stand / Opposition Analysis
Reading about Liam Ryan struggling to complete the Wet Toast Pre-Season offers an interesting insight into one of our opposition for 2019.

I would have thought Liam was one of 2018's most exciting prospects, and as a more mature body you'd expect him to go up a level in 2019, but maybe not given they pulled the pin early on his pre-season camp!

So you can expect his opponents will be running him all over the park in 2019!

So I thought I'd start this thread as a useful reference for the strengths and weakness of opponents in general, as opposed to round specific commentary. If you see anything of interest, clues to an opponents strength or possible foibles in their footy make up, please post it here.

The Sports Desk / Left Hand Turn
Can someone explain what drivers are supposed to do differently when a fast moving cyclist or motorcyclist rides into the passenger side of a slow moving left turning vehicle?

When has it ever been declared safe to overtake a left turning vehicle on the left side?

I post this based on rumors Hird just got injured colliding with a car in what is rumored to be similar circumstances. Social media reports it as "Hird hit by Car", but the early reports suggest "Hird rode into the side of a left turning vehicle!"

Really, my motivation for the post comes after a few weeks were I have witnessed multiple incidents relating to this sort of behavior. I was even abused by a set of cyclists who tried to ride around the left side of my car while I was waiting for children to clear a crossing. The cyclists, who seemed to be in a race, tried to go around my car as I began to roll forward rather than wait for me to complete the turn, a turn I had already partly completed from a dedicated left turn lane! In the process they actually rode across the pedestrian crossing that seconds earlier had a dozen or so primary school kids walking across it! Some of the kids had bikes and had dismounted to walk their bikes across the road!

Further twice this week in heavy traffic I have seen motorcyclists fly across the freeway exit ramp while riding effectively in the emergency lane. One did so narrowly missing an exiting car, then swerved to get back onto the freeway before the dividing barriers made it impossible, and to top things off kicked out at a slow moving car in the left hand freeway lane for not giving them enough room to merge despite the bike traveling faster than the car! Of course the rider pissed off up the road lane splitting between the very left and emergency lanes.

They are wankers, not just typical wankers, but massive wankers!

btw., The official rules for cyclists.

While cycling, you can overtake vehicles on the left but must give way to any vehicle in front of you that is turning left and signalling to turn left.

The Sports Desk / Macau Crash

How lucky is this kid, the others drivers, spectators and staff of the Formula 3 event. It's an engineering miracle that people were not killed. I'm glad she is out of surgery and looks likely to recover, hard to believe she is tweeting from the hospital bed.

But my nature makes me prone to pose the unpopular questions, and I can't help but pose this question despite not knowing what went wrong.

Is this what equality quotas get you when anti-discrimination laws become extreme, did this kid deserve to be out there?

Did she have enough of the basic skills to deal with a car problem at 280kph, or was she just there because of her gender and an allocated spot?

If there are quotas in this sport, how is that fair on other drivers, officials and spectators, how is it fair on her when she could lose her life? The equality argument will be it's her life to lose, but she has no right to possibly take others with her!

I'm interested in the thoughts of others, because outside of this specific incident it's an issue being discussed across several sports and life in general.

Blah-Blah Bar / Spy Drones et. al?
OK, just an off topic rumor.

Some of you may have read or viewed reports of Chinese made "spy chips" being embedded in devices like iPhones, Android Phones, tablets and laptops, etc., etc..

It now seems certain to be true without much doubt on many devices a small surplus serial communications chip about the size of a pinhead was added to many electronic boards manufactured under sub-contract in China.

How that works is unclear but it seems with the right process an electronics or software engineer can access a stream of unencrypted data off your device by accessing/addressing this device remotely.

More disturbingly, especially for those of you who perhaps consider gadgets like this toys, those chips are now being found embedded in devices like drones, Smart TVs, Sportcams, Webcams and even Light Bulbs!

While in the past these may have been the domain of a government, as a foreign agency secret back door. It seems now having been altered to the presence of those chips hackers have worked their way into accessing them, and the hackers activities are expected to be far more malicious. Ads have already appeared on the Dark Web selling access to hoards of devices for nefarious purposes by making sue of the said chip. FWIW, there is a good chance those Ads them-self are bogus and a scam, but you never know!

I don't know what state this leaves everybody's devices in, but it pays to be vigilant when technology is being used. You at least want to make sure your home networks and devices are updated and secured, not sure if it helps but what else can you do?

Maybe it's back to the pen and cheque book! ;D

The Sports Desk / Usain Bolt Bolted
The Bolt has Bolted.

Was it ever serious or just a cruel joke?

I cannot say I follow soccer that closely, but was this anymore than a political party standing an actor in a marginal seat?

Blah-Blah Bar / When Actors claim Defamation!
Not a football topic, but yet topical in recent times.

I've had this concern for sometime, but when professional actors claim defamation, and the witnesses and defendants are also professional actors. In an industry that rewards publicity be it good or bad, who do you believe?

In the Rush case, it looks to me like it is potentially a win / win on all sides except the media, that is a worry. The accuser wins because they have a massively increased profile, Rush wins because he probably gets a settlement to cap a career as it nears an end. The similarities are strong between the Rush case and the Wilson case.

Movements like #MeToo are a worry, too many people benefit from the notoriety that comes from being part of it. being raped, molested as a child and abused has become the norm for Hollywood types, there is hardly a one who claims to be free of such events?

Also, cases that are inherently subjective like the determination of subjectively offensive comments racial vilification under various statutes, etc., etc...

Can courts really decide on such subjective issues when the witness list comprises professional actors or vexatious litigants? Should the courts even try?

I think the recent David Penberthy article about Mumford in context of the media hypocrisy regarding drug use really highlights this issue. Also that erroneous broadcast by Hunchy and Barrett. For a long time the media as vehemently adhered to the strict regimen of never hunting their own, but David Penberthy violated that rules and even although I suspect he now finds himself as a pariah it's probably for the good!
