Title: CSC Upgrade
Post by: Spanner on December 21, 2019, 06:24:36 pm
Hi Everyone,

The CSC website has been upgraded. I hope you guys like it.

Please get back to me if you have any issues or errors.

Please note, if you want an avatar with your profile you will need to upload one from the My Account section at the top of the site...

Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone!

Spanner

Hi cpacom,

I don't know if its because its late, i'm hungover or it simply isn't there....

....but how the hell do you add an avatar? I've looked through 'My Account' and can't find an option.

Hi Kruddler,

Try the following:

Forum Profile > Modify Profile > Upload Avatar

Hi Kruddler,

Try the following:

Forum Profile > Modify Profile > Upload Avatar

All i can see when i do that is 'Personalised Picture'
and a little selector button which says next to it 'No Avatar'.
I cannot unselect that, and there is no option to add next to that anywhere

EDIT: You can probably limit the nested quotes back to 1 if you can.
Personally i'd bring back the navy blue colour scheme too, but thats less of an issue.

Yes.
As described above, the only thing under that heading is a selector button, which is selected, next to "No Avatar".
Directly under that it says Birthdate.

Been off-line for a couple of days and only just logged on so I'll have to have a bit of a look around but first impressions are very good. Looks nice and fresh...did the upgrade eradicate the problems most of us have been having with the 'post error' notifications.

If you go to the Community Recent Post link it's give you the summary of all threads.
https://www.carltonsc.com/index.php?action=recent

I'll be keen to see if I can get that RSS feed working, I't will allow me to see latest posts in my mail client and then I won't need to have the site open all the time.

Also no member status against some? (VFL / rookie etc etc etc)  Kruddler the "Ladies Lounge group"?

The Like feature should now be fixed. Can you guys please test it and get back to me if you have any issues.

You can Like a post only after you have contributed more than 1 post anywhere on the forum. After that, you can Like away as much as you like. If you've accidentally Liked a post, you can  click the Like again and that will remove the Like. Wow, so much of the word "like" in that previous sentence...

Hope that makes sense...

Confused ... why should you have to hit "like" twice to remove it?  It should be an additional "undo like" and for good measure, add in an "agree" tick icon.  Not as if the space to the left in that field doesn't exist.  My UAT background coming to the fore

Personally, I found all that annoying and hid all those extra boxes.

The way I was able to stay up to date is to use the "recent posts" button. On this new site is the talking bubble icon - immediately to the right of the bell.

If you hit that every topic that has been posted in will show up. It will show up in order of most recently posted in. So it is basically the scroller, but stationary...and more topics so you will never miss a single one.

Every time you hit that button it will refresh that list with anything you've read, disappearing from it and any new posts pushing topics to the top of the list.

Much better imo.

Hey rocky, See the screenshot below...

Just on that, if its not self explanatary, the little 'new' before the topic title takes you to very first unread post in that thread. That way you can be put back to where you left off on your last visit whether there is 1 post or 100 since then, it remembers. ;)
Title: Re: CSC Upgrade
Post by: Lods on December 24, 2019, 10:17:46 pm
Can I just suggest that this clean-up and upgrade is probably something that was necessary as we seemed to be getting a few bugs in the system. With it's occurrence there will be a few changes that some folks aren't entirely comfortable with or things such as the scrolling bar that may be missed. ( I actually found it a bit of a pain because if I missed the click I had to wait for the topic to scroll around again..and as I got older  'missing the click' happened more often).  :D
Spanner generously donates his time to maintain the technical side of the site. It can at times be a time consuming job and some requests may take a bit longer to address,  and some may be worthy of discussion of their merits before making a change. By all means point out any changes or tweakings you think may be of benefit but we should probably take a week or two to just get a feel of some of the features of the new format. It may be that there is already some button or bell that addresses an issue. It may also be that some posters are experiencing individual issues specific to them or their  browser.
Let's list the issues and then Spanner can address them at his convenience.
Title: Re: CSC Upgrade
Post by: kruddler on December 24, 2019, 10:42:15 pm
Some relatively minor tweaks, mainly asthetic.

1. I'm sure there is a better word for it, but the 'site icon' is now green and says something that i can't read. Back to CSC blue?

2. The header banner seems very simplistic. Can the old one be put in place of the plain text?

3. Any chance more of a 'Navy' theme? New site is very white.

Finally something that might be a tiny bit more technical...
4. Can we limit nesting of quotes back to one quote only as we did previously? We've already seen multiple posts quoted within quotes within quotes....very inception. ;)

5. Can we change my 'title' from Kruddlers Ladies Lounge Group to something a little less 'look at me'? Ladies Lounge Mod or something would suffice.
Title: Re: CSC Upgrade
Post by: PaulP on December 25, 2019, 08:54:31 am
I also think that the site is too white. And it would be better IMO if quoted text within a reply is a different colour.
Title: Re: CSC Upgrade
Post by: LP on December 26, 2019, 01:57:39 pm
I think when we consider the wide range of devices modern sites must cater for this is a pretty good upgrade/compromise. I've found it to be more readable, reliably and consistent between my phones and tablets.

Users of laptops or desktops have significant power on tap and can always override default site settings if they want to publish a custom style for the site they are viewing, it's not too difficult and a bit of tinkering will quickly get you to a result. Maybe someone with suitable training skills can publish a bit of a "HowTo" that can be left as a Sticky Thread for those interested in making a customisation. I think this update might even cater for user customisable themes at some later stage, perhaps someone wants to volunteer to give Spanner some assistance in this regard, perhaps we've some members with skill in vision assisted interfaces.

I think phone and small tablet users will appreciate the new clean look, it's certainly an upgrade on the smaller screens of some devices. It's probably even readable on a SmartTV, we can dump the dumb programming and browse CSC instead! ;D

There have been numerous requests for a darker theme for the CSC site. In response to this, I have created a navy blue theme as an option for those who want it. The default theme will be the original with a white background, but those who want a dark navy blue background can select the "blue" theme within your forum profile.

This can be accessed by clicking My Account at the top of the site and then...

My Profile > Look and Layout > Click Change Theme

Scroll down to the theme called blue and click Use this theme. That's it, you're done. You should now have a dark navy blue theme...

When the new Navy Blue theme is selected, the names of certain online users appear in a very bright electric blue colour. Its quite difficult to read against the navy background.
Title: Re: CSC Upgrade
Post by: PaulP on December 29, 2019, 03:16:43 pm
And just another couple of things :

- the CFC monogram used by some folks as their avatar is not visible against the new Navy theme.

- could the small circle that appears on the left next to the user name be used to show that user's online / offline status ? On my system, it's an outline circle regardless of whether that user is online or not. If we could have a green fill colour for online, and an outline circle for offline, that would be better.

Thanks.

One more thing -  on the old site, you could see which users were reading a particular thread - they were listed at the top. I like this feature, and if this could be implemented on the new site, I for one would be very appreciative.

Thanks.

I rather like the blue. There's just some kinks that need fixing.

The default colour theme is like the forum equivalent of our clash jumper.

For those who liked the scrolling un-read posts feed, and find it a bit cumbersone getting back to unread posts after reading a post on the new version, I've come up with a little shortcut.

I've saved the url for the unread posts page (https://www.carltonsc.com/index.php?action=unread) as my CSC bookmark on my bookmark bar.  Now I can get back there with one click to see the other posts I haven't read yet.

One more thing spanner....
When you 'reply' to a message you get the full functionality of formatting available via the buttons.
When you 'quote' a message, you get none of that. You could enter it all manually, sure, but most of the formatting i like to use is when i'm quoting a post. Bold parts, or splitting quotes etc. Can you have the formatting menu available when you 'quote' please.

Awesome work on everything else so far.
I think i had 5 suggestions/requests and you've done 4 so far.....just the banner remains.

Good stuff!

Not a biggy….but in the past some sites have had issues with official club monograms (in this case the CFC)  being used and have received some complaints.
Maybe the default avatar should be changed to  short circuit any issues, alternatively everyone update their avatars asap,

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd love to see the main header a bit more indicative of new activity when the landing page opens. I do notice on some devices you can see a change in typeface when a tab is active, but on some small devices it's a barely visible change.

For example perhaps also change color to the menu if there are New Posts to be seen!

I've saved my bookmark at the new posts page and keep going back there after reading a post to see other new ones.  if it helps - https://www.carltonsc.com/index.php?action=unread

Thanks, me too, it's a great shortcut for the new site.

The reason for my post is that I often leave the page open all day long and it doesn't automatically update/refresh, so to me some sort of auto-refreshed indicator would restore some of the function lost by the deprecation of the old news scroller.  But it's no big deal, it's useful if possible but it's not important.

Is it possible to have the “new posts” “ new reply’s” buttons at the bottom of the page as well ?
That way you don’t need to scroll back to the top of the page in order to move to the next post.

Great idea - I have thought the same thing as well.

Just fyi guys, i spoke to Spanner recently and he said with everything going on he is VERY busy.

Maybe in a month when all this stuff blows over might be a better time to ask again.

Wasn’t expecting it to be done today, just figured that if it was noted in here it would get seen and if deemed worthwhile then actioned.
