Title: AFLW 2020 Rd 2: Carlton vs Collingwood at Ikon on Sunday

It will be interesting to see how Collingwood play this week, having stolen Davies. It will also make next weekend's game have a little spice. I'm hoping we can keep our run against the Meat Pies going.

I'd be playing McEvoy on Davey and send a message that we don't need you, you have been replaced.

I note that the club has refused to acknowledge her since she left.
On 'Behind the game changers' they freely talk about previous players in regards to past stories, habits and what not. When the player in question was Bri Davey they refused to name her and said 'we wont talk about her will we' or words to that effect.
I think players are very bitter, still, towards her and they'd be keen to ensure she knows she made the wrong call.

Davey was taken from the ground with a lower leg injury late in the 3rd quarter today.

She appeared to be in a lot of pain, had the stretcher come out to her, but she hopped, and then limped off the ground without it in the end. Rules state that if a stretcher comes out, you are done for the day. So she may have been good enough to coe back on, but we'll never know.

The injury itself occurred in a marking contest, appeared to get a knock on her left leg, below the knee. Potential for a break, possibly a PCL, but also possibly just a bone on bone crunch/stinger.

Fingers crossed she needs a week off. ;)

Indeed.
I can understand why the girls are still angry with Davey. I am too.

This a is an aspect of AFLW that will show itself as a stark contrast to AFL, it's highly highly unlikely the girls will be having a friendly beer with Davey after a match.

I would prefer it if the person we can’t mention  ;) was fit to play.  It would mean that Collingwood have no excuses and it would also give our players an opportunity to work out their frustrations/anger  :)

Nah, f*** em. Let them have their excuses. This will be their 4th excuse on why they lost to us. ;)

Incidently, the Magpies are the only team above us on the combined ladder, albeit with a mere 3% of difference...345% to 342%
next best is 278%

They've got their excuse so we'd better flog them by a fair margin; 4 goals will do nicely :)

It will be interesting to see as a spectacle how the girls handle today's blustery conditions,

Even at the level of power and run shown in the AFL, games conducted in very strong winds can become a error riddled slug-fest. I fear today might be look closer to junior football that professional adult sport.

It will be a significant test for the bona fide of Harf's flexible game plan.

Harris looks to be beaten convincingly by Livingston. No impact at ground level, and not much of a target in the air.

Our girls are being smashed around the football, looks like Nthmond's tactics weren't just an aberration! :o

Harris looks to be beaten convincingly by Livingston. No impact at ground level, and not much of a target in the air.
Tayla looks like she lacks run, might be a bit of a side-effect of the boxing training but I suspect it's mainly the opposition tactic to stop her run at the ball. She needs to have a chat with Levi. Plus, I'm not so impressed with our flexible tactics if they are to kick to the person who is standing alone besides two or three opponents.

Presparkis is a gun, best AFLW footballer by some margin!

Loynes and Harrington playing under duress.

The ball barracking for Collingwood at every bouncing opportunity

A goal to the opposition in the first 10 seconds of the game.

Prespakis being taken out of the game.....well as much as anyone has managed to do so far in her short career.

Inaccurate kicking at goal.

.....and we are still only 2 goals down.

The key to the game that I have watched in the first 3 quarters is Presparkis. Her application and efforts are a blessing. Never a lazy moment from her. Her team could just attempt her efforts and swing momentum in a heartbeat. How about running harder and creating some space.

Why the F did Half play 2 extras in defence that qtr. Hard enough scoring in the women's game let alone having no one to kick to once out of defensive 50. Women don't get the rebound as the men do.

Until we can kick it to a forwards advantage, the ball will continue to spend time in our defensive 50. Extra numbers are helping combat that.

You won't kick it to advantage if you have nothing to kick to though because all your numbers are behind the ball. There's just not the quick rebound in the women's game.

We weren't doing that badly most of the 2nd qtr. Just felt we didn't have to, especially when behind. 2 goal deficit in the women's is equivalent to a 5 goal deficit in the men's. We needed to score.

We had the same amount of scoring shots.
We had more tackles inside 50.

The only thing we didn't do was kick well, both at goal, and to teammates.
Half can't kick it for them.

Our entries inside 50 were the issue, along with transitioning from half back to half forward.

We like to run and gun, but we needed to lower our eyes and not just bomb away.

I don't know if she can keep that up week in and week out, the opposition are smashing her and they do it penalty free! The Filth today basically charge at her off the square with someone running through her whichever way she turned.

This was the mirror image of last week: we were well beaten in the important aspects and a lot of our better players were down. I'm afraid Collingwood did their homework and we didn't appear to. :(

[1] Rucks and centre clearances:
Last week we dominated in this area. This week we really struggled, even though we won the taps. Moody was brilliant at the taps, but her taps generally didn't go to our advantage. We REALLY have to work on our centre square work before next week.
Ali Downie did OK, but couldn't direct her taps: her ruck style was very similar to Collingwood's Sharni Layton. However, Layton is that bit taller and stronger, so it was hard yakka in the middle.
Prespakis showed just how good she really was: she was tagged heavily and still managed to get the ball and do good things with it. We have to learn to protect her in the centre square so she can get reasonable clearances.
Our other mids worked hard, but just didn't have the system.

[2] Forwards:
Our big name forwards were very ordinary today. Tayla Harris was beaten in a way that we have never seen before. Her opponent was probably Collingwood's best. However, her comments after the game were definitely Inflammatory.  If we can get better control of the centre and deliver the ball, we might just be able to get her to eat her words. Tayla isn't a dud, but I really want to see us drive that back down that stupid throat.
Mind you, Tayla didn't look 100%. She moved much better last week.
Darcy Vescio had a shocker. Not enough chasing, not enough pressure on the Collingwood defenders, falling over her own feet and more. Our delivery to her faecal, which didn't help. However, Darcy really needs to produce more than that.
Nik Stevens had a shocker and barely touched the ball. She is another who needs to learn some lessons from this one.
Georgie Gee could have been the match winner, but the number of times she fumbled and dropped simple marks simply cost us opportunities.

[3] Our disposal:
Unlike last week, our disposal and ball handling was terrible this week. We fumbled and dropped marks, while Collingwood's play can smooth and clean. Our main avenue to goal appeared to be kicking over the top and trying to get to the ball first. Not a bad idea, but it simply didn't work on the way. We moved the ball too slowly and kicked the ball not to our advantage.

[4] Pace:
Other than a few speedsters (Walker and Dalton, for example), Collingwood were quicker than us. Especially in the middle. I didn't like that.

Vescio needs to perform like the marquee player she is supposed to be.  But she wasn't the lone ranger today.

Our old forum colleague had a good game today.

Vescio needs to be moved further up the ground, earlier on. Not let her spend half a game in a forwardline which has no chance of getting a ball kicked to their advantage.

Disappointing result but, with an ounce of luck, it could have been a different story.

Collingwood was too good on the day and we need to learn from that and lift our game.

It’s bad luck that the Hosking twins weren’t triplets or, even better, quadruplets.  You can generally rely on Sarah but Jess was equally dogged and showed elite skills today.

I think that the big difference this season is the skills on display; players rarely fumble a mark, delivery by hand and foot is generally good, tackles stick, and goal kicking is OK.

Did you know there are 7 sets of twins within the club, and even a set of triplets in there as well?

I don't know them all, but...
Obviously Jess and Sarah...
Lucy McEvoy has a twin brother
Gab Pound has a twin sister.
Tara Bonello is an operations manager....and a twin.
....and we had twin girls in our VFLW side as well Sarah and Gemma Wright.
