Blah-Blah Bar / Re: The CSC Music Appreciation Thread
Here's one for Tribey, a terrific garage-psyche revival band called The Black Hollies, they certainly get a good run on The Devil's Jukebox :

Another act that gets some airplay on The Devil's Jukebox is a faux-Russian band called The Red Elvises, here is a sample of their handiwork, both songs are from the same album :

Steve Earle was best known for his mainstream hit "Copperhead Road" but he had a heap of other great tracks over his career including this one "When The People Find Out", I bet you can't help but tap your foot to this country bop with its infectious 'call & response' gospel chorus.

The Sports Desk / Re: The Ashes - Second Test @ Lords
Harris is no world-beater but he is a genuine competitor and is not afraid to give them some "chin music" whereas Starc does tend to 'coast' through some bowling spells.

Cowan is finished as a Test batsmen, in fact he should never of been picked to tour. Khawaja has an opportunity to secure a place in the team for some time if he is prepared to put some value on his wicket. He doesn't need to pull out big tons either, scores of 20-30 in both innings are better than what Cowan has been offering up and demonstrates a consistency we have been badly lacking.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Chris Yarran has gone backwards.
Started the season  on fire.
Hit a bit of bad form and then has kind of lost the plot a bit.
Comes cross as the kind of player who backs his own ability and talk himself up, but could at times get ahead of himself too.

Very true & accurate assessment, at times you really do get the impression he thinks he is a better player than what his overall output would suggest.

He has till the end of the season to appease Malthouse & convince him that he not only wants to remain at the club but he will also follow Malthouse's instructions precisely. The reason I say that is Malthouse is not afraid to trade out regular players plus he has a system he works to that achieves success and anyone who doesn't buy into that plan ends up being booted.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Chris Yarran has gone backwards.
I remember a doco on TV a year or two ago about 3-4 young footballers and their lives. CY was one of them and he showed the guts and will to be eventually drafted into the AFL. All others fell by the wayside.

That showed me that he has got inner strength and yes EB1, maybe a mentor such as Mickey O would be a good idea for him to help him reach inside to that inner reserve?

The show was called 'Three Boys Dreaming' and got replayed just last week on ABC1.

I don't think its a case of him going backwards, its just that he picks & chooses when he wants to turn it on. This year, for reasons we can only speculate on, he has chosen not to get involved.

His big problem is between his ears and it is going to take a very gifted or patient coach or mentor to get that part of his character make-up changed permanently.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2013 - the year our best players went AWOL
I don't think it is as simple as Fly has outlined but his theory certainly is a contributing factor.

Sometimes, you can have all the talented players you like but they don't ever achieve success. People will look at the coaches, they will also point the finger at the development program or they will be looking for excuses like injuries or suspension as the reasons for non-performance. Whilst they are all quite valid options and actually could be the reason(s) why the team achieves nothing more than mediocre levels, there is also an intangible that does get overlooked time & time again.

Sometimes the group just doesn't work together !! By that I mean they are not emotionally engaged because they are not the right mix of characters. There needs to be some big characters (ie. extroverts) who bind them all-together as well as some back-slappers & encouragers. Don't discount the value of the players who will speak out and tell it like it is, they are not afraid to show their emotions, show that losing hurts them and they don't like it.

Every successful group has a mixture of characters but the bulk of them aren't shrinking violets or Marcel Marceau impersonators. With playing ability being on a par across most AFL lists, its the grey matter & attitude that eventually makes the difference.

We have too many gentlemen, quietly spoken & shy guys at the club right now. Even though a fair proportion of them can play footy, collectively they will never go on and win the big ones because they just don't have the leaders, fighters & shouters amongst them to lead them out of the trenches.

The Sports Desk / Re: Time For The DRS To Be Scrapped - Ashes Farce !!!
If the DRS is to remain, then its use or intervention of has to be taken out of the hands of the players because they have not helped its image or credibility.

Why the third umpire isn't allowed to intervene and over-rule on a howler is beyond me ?? What's the point of having the technology & the third guy in the box upstairs if they can't say anything unless the captain asks for it.

It's a complete joke at the moment so either get rid of it completely (my first preference) or not let the players pick & choose when it is used.

And lastly, the DRS should never ever be used for LBW decisions, it is just not accurate enough.
